Columns — Feature to Span Columns
Eink replied to David Horsfall's topic in Feedback for the Affinity V2 Suite of Products
Another sad oversight from Affinity. Still no span/split columns in latest release? So very disappointing. While I appreciate all the work Mr. Damm has invested in developing a work-around, I guess that's the point. A lot of extra work to do the same thing I can do with two clicks in InDesign. Don't get me wrong. I am not an Adobe fanboy and will jump ship immediately when a practical alternative presents itself. But really? Another new release without split/span? What a missed opportunity. Perhaps the folks at Affinity are worried that their servers won't be able to handle the load of designers who will immediately download the latest version after years of asking for this feature. Otherwise it seems like a lost opportunity for market share to release a new version that doesn't include this required feature. Oh well. Guess we're relegated to another year (at least) of hell. Perhaps we deserve it. -

Tables are not at all useful as a publication production tool. If fde101's report is correct, I'm going to give up on Publisher as an alternative. Without span/split columns Publisher is just not a practical alternative. Too bad. -

It is sad Mr. Damm. I've used Affinity Publisher and believe that it holds great promise for professional production environments like mine. But until the programmers can solve the split/span issue, there are too many steps required to perform the basic functions of magazine page layout to serve this industry. I'd happily pay double or triple the asking price for a software package that holds as much promise as Publisher does. Sad. -

Well said. Thank you Mr. Damm. Until and unless Affinity is able to add Split/Span functionality, it will never be considered a realistic alternative to the Adobe current monopoly. Once implemented I predict a rush to your doors. You'll (Affinity) need to be ready for all the downloads. I remain hopeful for implementation in 2025. Good luck. -

I believe that was my original point. Why switch to a new tool when using it requires so many additional steps to perform such a simple, yet critical task like Span/Split Columns? -

Sure. I could do something similar in Pagemaker and Quark Express too, but why bother when with one selection I can set columns under a spanned headline in a single text box and change the number of columns on the fly as needed in InDesign. Lot's of promise with Publisher, just not ready for primetime. Fingers remain crossed. -
In-line columns in Publisher

Understood and appreciated. However, my fingers are crossed. Until Serif can tackle the Split/Span feature, it's just not a realistic option for use in the publication production business. I have and will continue to keep my fingers crossed so I can break from the shackles imposed on my business by Adobe. -

I certainly hope I have not contributed to this mistaken conversation about serious versus non-serious designers because that's just not a useful conversation. I agree with Juhani that focusing on improving the first real and practical alternative to InDesign is something all designers should be interested in. For this shop, Affinity Publisher will be a game changer as soon as it's able to add span and split columns functionality needed for efficient layout of publications. Until then, it's neat, but not worthwhile working with in a publishing environment. Give us span/split, then sign us up for a long-term commitment. We're serious about that. -

In-line columns in Publisher

Greetings again Affinity folks. Still have my fingers crossed that Publisher will include Span/Split columns in the next release. I strongly encourage Affinity to consider adding that feature to the next release so that Pubisher can become a viable alternative to InDesign as a platform for publication production. Until then, sadly, we just can't take Publisher seriously. -

Another update. Still no span columns. What's going on? This is such an important feature for shops like ours that create multi-page publications that without it, Affinity just isn't a practical alternative for consideration. And that's too bad. I suspect that if Affinity can ever accommodate this functionality its market share will double overnight. Just sayin'. -

In our business (publication production) we need to make a lot of changes on the fly with story placement, widths and number of columns. Split/Span enables us to set an individual story (with headlines, bylines, subheads, etc. as a single object instead of two or three that can be moved and reformatted as needed. Yes, we could use a separate text box for headlines, of course, but then instead of addressing a story as a single object (as we do today in ID) we have to address each element independently. Just a bunch of extra steps and time on deadline when time is precious. Until/unless Split/Span an option in Affinity's Publisher, it's just not a viable option for us.

Today I noticed a significant new update — 1.9 has arrived. Congratulations Affinity team! Also noticed span/split columns still not offered. So sad. Our publication production house will keep our fingers crossed hoping that the next update will include span/split columns so we'll be able to join the Serif/Affinity family. Until then, alas, it's back to .indd. Good luck. Keep up the great work.

Rats! Another update, still no span/split columns. Hey Affinity! We can't wait to start using Publisher with our shiny new Macs in our production shop, but still can't make the switch without Span/Split.

Looking forward to switching from Adobe to Affinity, but can't justify the change in our heavy production environment until Publisher supports Span/Split columns. Hey Affinity developers! Is span/split on your drawing boards yet? If so, let me know. We'll switch as soon as it's an option. Sadly, until it is, abandoning Adobe is just a dream.
