Patrick Connor reacted to Fixx in 1-bit TIF export
As stated in other thread (https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/23232-1bit-bitmap-mode-colour-format/) 1-bit colour format export to TIF would be very useful.
It does not replace need for true dedicated 1-bit colour space, but would help a lot. It is possible to edit art in RGB or greyscale and have quite predictable output even when 1-bit conversion is the last step without adjustments.
In page layout, prepress and other printing systems TIF is much more reliable and usable than gif or png.

Patrick Connor reacted to Roberto1972 in Can testers volunteer for UI color change?
Ah, ok; makes totally sense. I know consistency is a very hard task when two or more people are involved. Therefore the 'long shot' :-)
And you all are right: first priority is turning the beta into an income generating one. With the Affinity series starting from scratch Serif had/has to rely on limited savings or even loanes anyway with less income from the usual product updates.
It's a big move to start from scratch so best to get through it as fast as possible :-)
Don't get it anyway why Affinity for Mac costs only 40 bucks; it's just way too low for such software. 'Hopefully' that price is temporary in order to get a name out there. Too cheap isn't taken serious by the pro sector anyway. Oops, now I'm drifting off topic... and worse: none of my business :-P

Patrick Connor reacted to Roberto1972 in Deleting snapshot - dangerous!
Hi,
Playing with snapshots I noticed a potential risk of deleting a snapshot instead of creating one: deleting a snapshot occurs without confirmation.
The icons for adding and deleting are placed next to eachother; kind of tricky that way. Perhaps the trash bin icon should be placed at the far right of the tab.
Attached a logical order of icons.

Patrick Connor reacted to MattP in Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5 - Beta 11)
Status: Beta Release
Purpose: New features, fixes
Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer
Mac App Store: Not Submitted
Download: 1.5 Beta 11 Here
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PLEASE BE AWARE - If you have not already run Beta 9 or 10, this version will reset all your settings. If you have already run Beta 9 or 10 then it will not. Please make sure that if you have created any palettes, styles, assets, brushes, etc in the current beta that you export them in the current version first BEFORE installing this beta otherwise you will lose them. This was unfortunately necessary for the Beta 9 build and should hopefully not be required again.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a beta of a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it should be considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that you may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity 1.5 cannot be opened in 1.4 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.5 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.4 version.
To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.
Fixes/Improvements:
Hopefully resolved issues relating to document's reporting they are already open or have a restore file available Improved hit testing for text objects, plus clicking in text tools will now always prefer text objects when selecting Fix for text wrapping behaviour with unclosed frames PSD import/export improvements Improved performance for 32bit HDR document format Fixed raster painting on transformed pixel layers Re-enabled ability to export metadata in File->Export->More Assorted macOS Sierra visual fixes Added 'Paste FX' menu item Enter Node Tool after hitting the 'Convert to Curves' button Slice names now update when Artboard names change Document palettes are now available from the fill flyout Fix for export using incorrect aspect ratio if an artboard is selected and the size of the output is modified Fix for Pencil tool leaving artefacts if 'Use Fill' is selected HSL slider mode in the Colour Chooser now correctly updates the colour box to show the chosen Saturation level Vector export improvements relating to composites and PDF printers marks Fix for lines with square caps invalidating the wrong area and leaving trails on the screen Deleting a node in the Node Tool can now use the old method (by pressing Delete) or the new method that maintains shape by pressing Alt/Option + Delete Miscellaneous other small fixes -
Patrick Connor reacted to MikeW in InDesign + Publisher compatability?
Me? I write on forums... ;^)
I leave writing for others. I mainly layout, and at times illustrate, technical manuals, books and do various other publishing work, largely using XML (or tagged text) as the format that hits me from various CMS front-ends.
There's not a creative bone in my body.
What type(s) of writing do you do?

Patrick Connor reacted to MEB in Is Affinity D for professional use?
It may not be crashing but there still issues to solve with fonts, shortcuts, UI issues etc. If you take a look at the Beta's release threads (here's the last one) you can have an idea of the issues that were fixed (changelog on the first post) as well as reports from others users about the issues they are encountering in the latest Beta.
There's no ETA for its release yet. It depends on how developments goes.

Patrick Connor reacted to MattP in SVG Export - Unnecessary g transforms
Here's what I get when I go to Export SVG and hit the 'More' button and specify 'Flatten transforms':
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?> <!DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD SVG 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/1.1/DTD/svg11.dtd"> <svg width="100%" height="100%" viewBox="0 0 12 11" version="1.1" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xml:space="preserve" style="fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;stroke-linejoin:round;stroke-miterlimit:1.41421;"> <rect x="0" y="0" width="12" height="11" style="fill:rgb(235,235,235);"/> <path d="M6,2.501L8.499,7.499L3.501,7.499L6,2.501Z" style="fill:rgb(153,153,153);"/> </svg> You can just use this if you'd prefer :) We're trying to write out as much of the information in your document as possible. Not everybody wants the same things from their SVG export which is why the option is there... Imagine the case where you were intending to script that Rectangle movement from its original location to the new destination - that transform and <g> would actually come in useful. Thanks, Matt -
Patrick Connor reacted to Greyfox in Crash with simple line
Mark,
A couple of times (yesterday) when I was trying this, it did say on the following restart that it had sent a report, but it mostly starts up after the unhandled exception normally. and there is nothing in the %APPDATA%\Affinity\Designer\1.0 (Beta)\Crash Reports folder.
Opening Ian Brockbank's file and clicking on the stroke tab 100% of the time produces the crash here.
Some times just opening the file produces the unhandled exception.
I've just tried a Ctrl Key runup, all items selected, clear
File->Open (file opened OK to what appears to be a blank landscape canvas, but with a Curve shown in the layers tab), see screen shot below.
Click on Stroke
"An Unhandled Exception has occurred. Code 0xE0434352"
"Designer has stopped working....." Close program
Nothing found in %appdata%\Affinity\Designer\1.0 (Beta)\CrashReports
Start Affinity Designer, no error report dialogue.

Patrick Connor reacted to R C-R in Question about Affinity beta for Windows
It can be more than a little confusing, but it should help if you keep in mind that currently there are five different Affinity apps:
• Affinity Designer for Mac (a retail product for sale only in the Mac App Store)
• Affinity Photo for Mac (a retail product for sale only in the Mac App Store)
• Affinity Designer Beta for Mac (intended only for testing, a free download that requires the retail version be installed to run)
• Affinity Photo Beta for Mac (intended only for testing, a free download that requires the retail version be installed to run)
• Affinity Designer Beta for Windows (intended only for testing, a free download that will expire when the retail version is released)

Patrick Connor reacted to R C-R in Using NIK Tools with Affinity Photo
No special permissions need to be set. See MEB's page here for info about which NIK (& other) plugins work with Affinity Photo (which currently is only available for OS X so there is no separate Windows version to be confused about).
MEB's post here explains how to set AP's plugin preferences for use with the NIK collection -- but note that the Plug-in Search Folders path will vary depending on if you have Photoshop installed or not.
This YouTube video explains how to run the installer & set up the AP preferences. It is for a slightly older version of AP but the important parts are the same.
EDIT: More stuff I forgot to mention:
• The NIK plugins are destructive so it is a good idea to duplicate the layer before using one of them.
• If you are still having problems getting them to work after checking out all of the above, please tell us if you have any version of Photoshop installed & if so, which one -- this makes a big difference in the install & setup procedure.
• Depending on if you create an extra install location, you may have installed standalone versions of each of the plugins -- these are apps that can you can run like any other app (independently of Affinity Photo or any other graphics app). This can be very useful if you want to apply any of the NIK plugin effects that don't work in AP.

Patrick Connor reacted to R C-R in Question about Affinity beta for Windows
The most current release is Affinity Designer Public Beta - 1.5.0.12 (Windows). It is the Windows counterpart to the Mac version of Affinity Designer. The Windows version of Affinity Photo is still in development & has not yet reached the beta stage.

Patrick Connor reacted to MEB in Manual for Affinity
Hi Suzy,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Sorry no ETA yet. Meanwhile there's a few other resources that may interest you:
- In-house video tutorials for Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo
- The Help file covers extensively all the features of the each program, don’t overlook it. Some users also converted it to an iBook format and shared the file here in the forums. - Affinity Review our ezine, also includes some in-depth written and video tutorials covering specific subjects. The PDF version doesn’t include video. - I’ve also compiled a list of other learning resources here, including Books, Training Courses and Third-party tutorials that may help. -
Patrick Connor reacted to drippy cat in Dragan Effect
Hi Digbydo,
Thanks for updating me over on the Udemy thread with the new information. It is odd that when you did the tutorial it worked when you used my file and not yours. If, and I stress the word 'if' it's a technical problem then it's beyond me to figure it out. But just so you know, I found out about this thread when one of the moderators very kindly emailed me saying that a user was talking about a problem on a Udemy course and could I provide some illumination etc. Then again, it doesn't surprise me that they did since the Affinity people seem red hot at providing support.
So they are clearly looking into your troubles. For my part I'm stepping through my own tutorials again to see if there's something there I could have got wrong. The issue you mentioned about whether you need the merged layer active is something I'll also look into.
In the meantime, would it be an idea to keep the messages to just one forum? This forum and the Udemy forum are both public forums, but maybe this one would be better since more people can see it, including the Affinity moderators. The reason I ask is that I don't want to accidentally miss any posts from you because I was looking in the wrong place.

Patrick Connor got a reaction from Chris B in System requirements (Buying Surface 3)
For other people reading this thread, please note the Surface (non-Pro) and Surface 2 (non-Pro) have Windows RT and will not run Affinity, so the Surface 3 is the first non Pro model that would run Affinity software. All of the Surface Pro models (1, 2, 3 & 4) would run Affinity Windows versions.

Patrick Connor reacted to MattP in some visible hairline that irritate
You will get this hairline in any vector program to a greater or lesser extent whenever two edges are exactly the same value... It's a side-effect of the way the rasterisation routine works... There are ways to reduce the effect, but to solve it completely really needs a different approach to the rasterisation (that nobody uses because it provides worse results in other cases). The effects will change based on the exact zoom level and position of the objects on a sub-pixel, but they will always be there. The easiest way to get rid of these is simply to extend objects to overlap in ways that don't matter, and to overlap and 'Add' objects of the same colour to form one object from two that used to butt up to each other. You could also try using the advanced blending options (the cog on the Layers panel) with your objects selected and adjust the antialiasing ramp to include more of the pixels.
We will continue to try to improve this over time, but it is an inherent problem with any vector drawing program (although some do deliberately distort the values you asked for in order to reduce the appearance of this effect, so they seem to be working better - although you can make them fail if you know how...)
Thanks,
Matt

Patrick Connor reacted to MikeW in export files DPI means nothing
I don't have "a dog in this fight"...if I had my preference it would state reality. But spend more than five minutes dealing with the issue and it should be clear as to how/what/when the terms are independent or have identical meaning.
When used as a multiplier/divisor field as is the case when most applications resample, I cannot think of a better term. (Which I also do not like.)
Windows displays images' properties properly. If there is info in the DPI metadata, it includes it, if not, it is excluded. In all cases it displays the pixel info.
Photoshop prior to Adobe's ownership is what started the confusion between dpi and ppi if I recall. It is carried into today.

Patrick Connor reacted to MEB in History Brush in AP?
Hi jhmdigital,
The tool you are referring to is actually called Undo Brush. It's located below the Clone Brush Tool. You can find more info about it in Affinity Photo Help ▸ Workspace ▸ Tools ▸ Retouch Tools ▸ Undo Brush Tool.
You can use it to paint from a previously saved Snapshot or History state.
