Patrick Connor got a reaction from Energeiai in It's PPI not DPI
Balling,
Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, :)
Technically you are correct, but there is a widespread acceptance of the term DPI as being understood to mean PPI.
This thread covers this quite well, as does this and this and this and this, so you see you are not alone in asking and we do consider all user requests, so thank you.

Patrick Connor reacted to ronnyb in MAS 1.5
Congrats @MattP and the rest of the team you guys knocked this release out of the park! Symbols, Constraints and Asset Management are huge productivity boosters, thanks for all the hard work. The website and videos and tutorials all look great. Hats off to the entire company, you guys are making the future very exciting. Can't wait for Affinity Publisher Beta, and Designer and Photo (and Publisher) on iOS. Still holding off on that iPad Pro until you guys release the software, lol... I want the latest and shiniest hardware for Affinity :D Cheers !!!

Patrick Connor reacted to Dave Harris in Fonts - problem with alternates/ligatures.
My starting point for this is the OpenType specification, which specifies which features should be on by default. For init it says, "In recommended usage, this feature triggers substitutions that are required for correct display of the given script. It should be applied by default in the appropriate contexts, as determined by script-specific processing. Control of the feature should not generally be exposed to the user." I read this as saying it is not one of the contextual alternates; it is not a cosmetic feature that the user can choose to have on or off. It is required to be on for scripts like Arabic to appear correct.
Admittedly this is coloured by mention of "appropriate contexts". I take this to mean the app is responsible for detecting the starts of lines, and for disabling the feature appropriately. It also mentions "script-specific". The OpenType format allows different tables for different scripts, so I feel that if the font designer does not want the init feature in Latin, they will simply leave it out of the Latin tables, and the app doesn't need to do anything special beyond identifying the script and using the appropriate table.
A further complication is that Affinity doesn't currently let you specific the script explicitly. The Character panel has a single language, which is primarily used for spell checking, and the OpenType script and language are deduced from that. In future I think we should add more languages and scripts to that section, so that for example you could set the language to None for spell checking and still have German hyphenation rules and OpenType ligatures.
Looking at Adobe apps, it seems to me they don't follow the specification at all. They don't provide any way to set the OpenType script either. I suspect they added UI for init in lieu of that, and they made it default to off for the sake of Latin scripts. It also seems some font designers have been mislead by Adobe, and have started treating init as an optional feature. The OpenType specification for init says it was revised in 2016, presumably to clarify the intent, but it's too late now. We have come across fonts like this before, which is why I added UI to switch init off as a workaround for them. It's one of those time where we must choose between following Adobe or doing what is correct. I am loath to switch it off by default globally, but I will look into whether we can have it on by default for Arabic, and off by default for Latin scripts.

Patrick Connor reacted to Nazario in (MAC) Grade UI kit not available for install?
Hi MEB,
It seems it just took quite a while to come through. Affinity is on my whitelist so I was pretty sure it wasn't being blocked or going in spam. It took a good 10 minutes to come through though.
Thanks for your quick response though :)

Patrick Connor got a reaction from Alfred in Request "UI" User interface features
I thought you had repeatedly said it had been answered categorically. What would you do with another categorical answer? ;)
Light UI will be released, like all our features, when it's ready.

Patrick Connor got a reaction from DannyG in Mac / Windows Version
The Grade UI kit offer will also be available for the Windows 1.5 release, though the download is exactly the same files, so if you have it for Mac then you have it for Windows already.

Patrick Connor got a reaction from anon1 in Request "UI" User interface features
It's a bigger job than it looks, and it's not on the roadmap. The 1.X roadmap is there to stop users having to read everything else to know what's going in.
If think you can tell I'm not going to commit to any timeline, sorry.

Patrick Connor reacted to MEB in Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5 - Beta 15)
Hi Tekikou,
As far as i can see this is working as designed. What's going on is that the X, Y coordinates of the objects are not integer values. If you go to Affinity Designer Preferences, User Interface section and change the number to 6 in the Points field (Decimal Places for Unit Type section), you will be able to see them in the input field in the Transform panel (Affinity is actually more precise than that but for UI/display purposes we only display six decimal places). When you "revalidate" the values clicking in the input field and pressing Enter you are actually discarding them (despite them not being visible due to the preference mentioned), rounding to the whole value (integer). The slight changes you see on the canvas are the visual result of that rounding.
If you enable snapping (Snap to grid - for a pt based grid) when positioning/drawig the elements you can prevent this.

Thanks Manroe, sorry I missed the subtlety of this report being specific to that control.

Patrick Connor got a reaction from KipV in Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.5 - RC1)
The plan is that Affinity Photo will be kept 'in sync' with a simultaneous Photo 1.4.4 that can read Affinity Designer 1.5 files. Then when Affinity Photo 1.5 is ready to release there will probably be an equivalent simultaneous Designer 1.5.1 release to keep everything in sync again regarding supported features and files.
Bear with us, we are tweaking one or two things behind the scenes... When it's ready it will prompt.

Patrick Connor reacted to Mark Ingram in Crash report
Hi, I can't find your crash report in our database, is there any chance you can attach it to this thread? It should be in the following location:
%APPDATA%\Affinity\Designer\1.0 (Beta)\CrashReports\
(I'm assuming you're using version 1.5.0.21?)

Patrick Connor reacted to FatCatStud!o in Layer management
Hi guys,
At first I would like to excuse for my English. It's not good enough to write too much. ;)
But I have an idea, and I would love if You'll think about it.
Lately I designed something like that:
periodic_table.zip
(Iif you like it, you can take it and use it. It's public domain. But it didn't have lately discovered elements 113, 115, 117, 118. I'll update it soon. ;))
As the name says it's a periodic table. It consist of 118 elements, and each element consist of 5 layers. For one language. Without the legend. I have 3 languages. English, Polish and Latin. So I have almost 1800 layers.
Working with such amount of layers is a pain in the ass. You have to scroll a lot, select hundreds of layers and change their properties.
So, I have an idea. What if you could assign a tag to the layer? And then search the layers by this tags? And then select all searched layers and change the thickness of a border. Or size of a font. Or whatever you need.
I think it'll be a great improvement in working with multi layered documents.
There's no other graphic software on the market that allows this level of layer management. If you implement it, don't forget to patent it and charge Adobe for using this idea. And send me some money for the invention. ;)
I hope You like this idea, and You'll think about it. :)
Cheers!
EDi

Patrick Connor reacted to MEB in Common Feature Requests INDEX
Common Feature Requests index
Below is a list of common requested features for which there is already a thread created. Please avoid to create new ones if your request/feedback fits in one of those threads. We consider all requests no matter if they are common (and listed here) or not. The intend of this list is to avoid unnecessary thread duplicates. If you need to create a new one, please add just ONE request per thread. There is NOT a vote system in place. Adding +1 to those topics will NOT affect their priority nor imply their implementation. That’s mostly dependent on time and development goals and constraints. Thanks.

Patrick Connor reacted to MikeW in Printing 2 color film separations
Here's a PDF made using the image from the PDF, the type converted to curves. The image is grayscale, the Pantone is correct. It's a two-color job.

I'm downloading the AD ZIP package now. I do need to run to the office and meet with a customer and so I'll be gone a couple hours. In the meantime, please inspect the PDF at the link and you can decide whether I should re-run it with the new ZIP contents.
