Patrick Connor reacted to Dave Harris in Why Publisher shouldn't be released anytime soon
Thanks for your comments. I have to say that making a clone of InDesign is not our goal; we have our own vision. Also, our plan is to release Publisher as soon as it has enough to be useful to someone. We won't wait until it can do everything InDesign can do and more. As a result, you can expect the first version to be quite basic. In the same way that Designer is still missing things like arrow heads which are crucial to some people, Publisher will be missing features that some of you will need. I don't want you to think we are already sitting on a basic Publisher and not releasing it because we want to add more advanced features first.
Publisher is delayed simply because it is taking us longer than we expected. I can't say too much about what we have and haven't done, but here's an example: text styles are a crucial Publisher feature, and the reason they are in Designer 1.5 and not earlier is because they weren't developed earlier. In general, when we have a Publisher feature complete that we think also belongs in Designer, we'll include it in Designer as soon as it is ready. (The caveat is that there are some features we know you'd like to see in Designer, that we don't think belong in it.)
I'm sorry it is taking so long, and I'm especially sorry that our past timelines for Publisher were so wildly optimistic. Our original vision of three apps all sharing a file format and a common way of working, was something we were very excited about. That exuberance spilled into some fairly delirious announced schedules. We will get there. We're still excited about the vision and determined to bring it about, just as soon as we can.

Patrick Connor reacted to StevedHDR in Introduce Yourself
Hi
A passion for both Art and Photography has been with since my childhood days where I was very fortunate to have access to all the London art galleries. In my early twenties, I discovered photography which opened an entirely new world for me.
After reading many books and a list of complete failures I now like to think myself as a visual artist, and this can take many forms from photography straight from my camera and composite photo work.
My camera of choice is a Fuji XT1 which I have been using for about a year now. It is a fantastic photographers camera being very versatile and suits travel and street photography. Its light weight is very beneficial if you are hiking over long distances to grab that special landscape image.
I am looking forward to contributing to the forum.

Thanks for your kind words. That would have to be a very large poll in order to satisfy this criterion

Patrick Connor reacted to AuthorAuthor in 100,000 Beta signed up?! Phenomenal!
I just want to congratulate everyone who is making this maiden launch into the Windows market all the success in the world. It must surely say something about Windows designers and their craving for a fast, feature-rich, and affordable professional level program.
During the beta cycle, I have already intrigued several fellow artists and shared my "secret" with them. They might be beta testers now, too! :)
Here's an example of what got the gang in my social circle fascinated by the program. The biggest question was, "How did you do that?"
I was easy. And you people are instrumental in great work by others to shortly follow!
Get the Gold Version out soon, eh?
My Best,
Gary

Patrick Connor reacted to Sunset in Affinity Designer Workbook
Have to love insomnia, working my way through the Affinity Designer Workbook, picking up little things that I hadn't noticed before and finally understanding the purpose of artboards! I've designed three colourways of the logo for my new imaginary company and I am waiting for my imaginary client to choose one and pay me some imaginary money. Imagine is the key word with this new book, it banishes the 'white page" syndrome and feeds my imagination.

There are no plans for an electronic version, no. This "coffee table" hardback format is substantial agreed as it's on high quality paper, but that is what we have. Sorry.

Patrick Connor reacted to CMM in Eye drop tool
Hi. I would like to see the eyedropper tool expanded beyond transferring only color, to transferring formatting as in Adobe InDesign, et al.

Click here to download the latest beta
Status: Release Candidate 2
Purpose: Stability
Requirements: None
As this is a beta release, it is considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that you may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is worth noting that files created in Affinity Designer 1.5 cannot be opened in Affinity Photo 1.4, which means that although files created with the Windows beta can be opened in the Mac AppStore version of Designer (currently on 1.5.1) they cannot be opened in the latest Mac App Store versions Affinity Photo, instead you will need the latest macOS 1.5 beta.
We hope you enjoy the latest build, and as always, if you've got any problems, please don't hesitate to post here and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. Thanks once again for your continued feedback. If you have a general question about the software, please head over to the Questions Forum, or if you have any suggestions, please head over to the Feature Requests forum.

Patrick Connor reacted to Lee D in WORKBOOK
Hi JohnM,
Go to the Chapter 2 index page (Page 69), look for the line:
"You get all the resources you need for this chapter from affin.co/xxxxx"
Type this into your browsers address bar and the file will begin to download, once finished double click to extract, you then have all the files needed for this chapter.
Hope this helps.

Serif do NOT save your credit card details. We save the last 4 digits of the 16 you entered, and your name, but not the security number, and a tokenized version of the transaction. This is standard practice and it is not enough to do anything further with.
To give some background, all responsible merchants shouldn’t be storing credit card information for over half a decade now…instead they swapped to credit card tokenization where a token is stored but the credit card information no longer exists. Our order gateway is Stripe, who are fully PCI compliant. For PCI-DSS compliance since June (summer of 2010), most Merchants started the journey of not storing credit cards natively in their database, some store the last 4 digits and then may store a token that links to the accompanying payment information to the gateway processor. As the token is only undecipherable using a private Serif owned Stripe key, that token would be useless to anyone but Serif.
We have to store this token to show you the card that was used to place the order and for legal tax reasons. However we do not have to use offer that token for your next purchase. At the moment you can replace a card when placing your next order but not remove the used one from being offered again (i.e. "delete the key" outside of an order). I think it is a very sensible suggestion to add the option to remove that token from being available future purchases by you. Being a new shop we have had a few useful suggestions like this that we will implement.

Patrick Connor reacted to R C-R in Undo rotate of canvas
Both Affinity apps also include the "Reset Rotation" item on the View menu, which means you can assign a keyboard shortcut to that function if you want. Both also include a preference in the Tools section to disable canvas rotation with the trackpad if you don't use that feature & want to avoid accidentally triggering it.

Patrick Connor reacted to DavidMac in Undo rotate of canvas
With almost any (but not quite all) of the basic tools selected you can right click in the image and select Reset Rotation.
As a footnote this is also how you can rotate if you don't have a touch pad or rotate disc on your Wacom.

Patrick Connor reacted to MEB in Scaling with proportion - When does it happen automatically?
Hi Inspirimental
The reason is because for objects with an intrinsic aspect ratio, like text and images, you probably won't want to change their proportions most of the time and so there's no need to press any modifier key, for the rest there's no reason to constrain them by default so you only have to press a modifier when you do want to keep their proportions. However you can choose the behaviour you wish in Affinity Designer/Photo ▸ Preferences, Tools section in the Move Tool Aspect Constrain dropdown so that all objects require you press the modifier (or not) to keep their proportions. The default is Automatic and it behaves as described above.

Please note that if you wish to place an order, the online store buying system does not know about your Affinity forum login/account.
Ordering a book will create a new account, so the "Sign In" option will not know your email or password until after you have placed an order.

Patrick Connor reacted to angelhdz12 in crash undoing trasparent tool
I was about to post this same bug:
When using the Transparency Tool on rastered objects/layers, then hitting UNDO, throws an Unhandled Exception as seen in the attached image. Reproduced in 2 computers, one with Windows 7 the other with Windows 8.1, and in different versions of the Affinity Designer Beta, even in the RC1.

Patrick Connor reacted to Joe Free in User definable rotation point – please with x/y coordinates
I would love this, as well as to be able to select a rotation point with snap. For example, hover over snap points and select the one you want. It would be great if the snap points included midpoints of objects, endpoints of objects, centers of ovals/circles/arcs, and tangents of curves.

I would like the option to disable the font previews in the font drop down, as well as the live on-page font change as one scrolls through fonts.

Patrick Connor reacted to pwlj in Affinity Designer Public Beta (RC1) - 1.5.0.25 (Windows)
Hello i somehow can't manage to create multi-page PDF with the latest version - it was working fine up to RC1.
Now, when i try to export whole document to PDF I get one big document with all artboards side by side, instead of separate no pages.
the same file exports fine with older versions of Affinity Designer.
Anyway, big thanks for bringing this software to PC!
regards,
P.
