Hi Nathan, Lindon,
I've just gone into the PerformancePreferences.xml files for both photo and publisher and change UseHardwareAcceleration>True</UseHardwareAcceleration> to UseHardwareAcceleration>False</UseHardwareAcceleration> as you recommended. Appears to be working fine now.

Im sure there are a buch of such Win tools which will do the job, as far as they also offer to setup/associate additional file types. - Adhoc to my mind do come things like XNViewMP, Adobe Bridge, digiKam, Darktable ... etc. - There are too much to list them all here!
