I am also very keen to see an Affinity DAM.

I have used Aperture since its introduction and have tried Lr 3 times, most recently this last couple of months.  As a DAM, it is not as fine a piece of software as Aperture *was*.  So I'm hobbling along with a Mac on an old OS until something better comes along.

I was hoping this new alternative would be Affinity DAM this year, but it would seem this is not going to happen.  Windows appears to have stolen its wind!!  (BUT watch out Affinity, because you're massive current success has come thanks to a total dedication to a single platform and a unique opportunity.  Diluting your efforts is a dangerous game.)

Anyway ... the word, or explanation you're all hunting for, to describe what Photoshop and AF-Photo do ... but Lr, C1, Aperture etc. do not do, is 'compositing'.  Us old timers used to use the word all the time. You can't 'composite' with Lr or C1 or Aperture.

I think that if Serif make a DAM, then they will do so with the hope of selling as many copies as possible.  The only way they can achieve this goal, is to completely and reliably take care of the migration.

The task is too daunting for most individual users to consider.  Adobe, in a fairly typical Adobe way, half did this for Aperture to Lr.  They do the easy stuff for you (text) but made no effort to carry adjustments over.  Since Aperture's adjustments are all text-based and brushes are simply alpha masks, it may have required some investment in programming, but as ever, Adobe only look at the bottom line.

So I hope very much that Serif will invest in making a smooth transition simple.  How incredible would it be, to simply import your Aperture libraries into AF-DAM and boom!  Everything is there.  (Sounds like the sort of thing Jobs would have liked to do right.)

I am not vey clear at what the DAM is supposed to do...

In my wildest dream it would be companion to Affinity Photo (or designer/Publisher), allowing to catalog images, manage meta data, rate/flag images, etc. In the ideal world, it would somehow side by Photo allowing a seemless integration of its Raw development power but also keep edited photos, edited in Photo (composited) near it's Raw original (Like a version of some sort). Some sort of an Aperture, C1 or LT, as people seem to mention here.

Or are we all way off in our understanding of the comping product?

Anyhow assuming my understanding is correct, like many other, I cry the lost of Aperture and hope for a viable replacement. As it stands, the only options seem to be C1 or LT. IMO, the delay is a great issue here since the days of aperture are counted. In the sense that those who like me who stick with it until a good solution presents itself will sooner or later be force to begin the time consuming process of converting their library... This is no something we want to do twice. Some have already migrated, so the more wait there is the more painful it would be to make the move later...

I can decide to move from illustrator/photoshop/Indesign to the Affinity suite anytime without too much consequences. In a year or two or three... no problem (not that I will wait that long, but I'm just saying). That means waiting and delays have less consequneces there. Even for a iPad app, regardless how cool and "Actual it is". If those arrive later, we can still adopt it.

However, regarding a DAM, it's unlikely that I will decide to leave Lightroom or C1 if I ever decide to move my library there... Unless there is really, really, really powerful and painless free import feature in the Affinity DAM.

At the very least I would release a list of core features, so it's clear what it will do. That would give enthusiasts a reason to wait...

Am I at all discussing the right kind of software here?

    Cheers!

Affinity have been stunned by their own success (as much through a fluke of timing as their own efforts).

They have been unable to resist going for the massive market that has been dangled in front of them ... but ... as ever, it can disappear as quickly as it appeared.  I think they made a big mistake going for the Windows market so soon.  They should have waited for at least two years, until their Mac products were mature enough and the teams solid enough before diversifying. But what do I know?

Anyway ... the DAM was a big carrot for me ... now I don't have that carrot.

    Indeed!

And we hope that Serif take their inspiration from Aperture AND NOT from Lightroom.

Aperture still a wonderful UI and such a shame that Apple have moved away from pros ... but it's another opportunity for Serif.

To be fair, I am sure they have some strategy in place.

You're right, what do we know! Who are we, as end users, to say that they need 2 years (or 15 years or whatever) for them to mature? Or for their teams to be solid enough?

I just wish that they could have gone in the iPad direction first and then Windows but I feel this could be selfish on my part.

Seems that by diversifying in the way they're doing, they would be able to expand brand recognition as well as the base for testing of bugs and features.

Nevertheless, my iPad is dying to try out Photo/Designer as native apps!

Andy said we would have news of the new DAM during 2016 - but we're already into September and absolutely no news whatsoever.  I realise that you're very busy, but how about just a little more information on the proposed release date for this software?  This would be very much appreciated by lots of your eager fans I think.  :)

+ 1 as very keen to see a replacement for Aperture.

I never liked Lr, especially the appaling early UI, but also its rigid modes.  Aperture was also much better as a management tool and the choice of Managed or Referenced on a file-by-file basis is terrific.

My one BIG please ... would be ... PLEASE provide some way of retaining as much of an Aperture library as possible in transition ... including adjustments.  I have no idea how you might acheive this, but as a possible, I can say that Aperture has deep Applescript support and perhaps Apple's own Sal Soghoian could be persuaded to help seeing as he has done some very clever Aperture stuff in the past?

Anyway ... can't wait to see what you come up with, as I'm holding out for the time being in Aperture and reporting any bugs in MacOS betas that I come across, in the hope that it will last until there's an appealing alternative. :)

As Adobe has decided to make the import screen in Lightroom suitable for Instagram users, I have concerns wether Lightroom should be replaced in the future. Adobe makes this concerns even bigger by publishing buggy apps too early which ruin lives of professionals.

Last year, Serif came out with this Affinity-suite and I have high hopes that they will release a Lightroom alternative. I am serious about that, since Capture One, well, does not work for me.
But if you do, make sure that people can transfer 100k photos with any adjustments non-destructively.

I don't know if you have plans for this, or if you have resources for this. But if you have, well, I would be the first to buy.

Adobe is going for Instagram users with all their iOS-photoshop-mix-fix crap, which is not what professionals want. I know that one day, I will enjoy Affinity Designer on my iPad without compromises.
And I hope you guys could rescue the professional photography business.

I know this post has not the right spot in the forum, since everything is about Designer or Photo. But I just want to post this to see wether this could be the future of photography.

Any name suggestions for a Lightroom alternative?

    Salut,

    Andy.

For anyone reading this, I have discovered how to get a 'sharp' clean mask.

You have to use the Selection Brush tool and do NOT use the Refine Mask tool.  If you use the Refine Mask dialog, your neat/sharp mask will be instantly transformed into a mushy mess.

In order to improve your mask after having made it, you have to select the layer containing your mask, then choose : -Select Menu/Selection from Layer -  you must zoom in and use the Selection Brush on the Selection to improve it.  Then save as mask.

The Refine Mask tool may be good for soft edged masks, but it doesn't work well for clean edged masks.

you can just open the index file in a web-browser and save the first page as a bookmark, there by making it an instantly accessible offline web site.

Closing tab bar and favourites bar etc. makes it pretty much an identical view to the Help viewer ... except it doesn't annoyingly float above all other windows.
