Fruitbasket got a reaction from JGD in View objects outside artboard.
MEB, could you please clarify: From what I can see, the problem is unrelated to importing an AI file only. When creating a new file in Affinity Designer, and dragging objects from the artboard to the black area surrounding it, then the objects disappear. While still selected, an object's bounding boxes is still visible. But the *object* itself is not visible, and once I deselect, it's essentially lost in 'space'.
I have purchased AD & AP and I'm still in the process of converting from Illustrator. The issues keep piling up, reading in forums that there are no fixes. My workflow depends on having objects outside of the artboard. Also, I make repeating patterns, which is also facilitated by seeing beyond the artboard boundaries as all edges are being overlapped by artwork. So disappointing and discouraging.

I am sorry to here that this program doesn't have this feature. I guess I should of done my research better before I bought it. I would not of paid money for this program if I had known. Any idea how much longer until this becomes a feature of the program?

That is one of the reason I still would use illustrator ..   Don't want to get a subscription just for that!!!
    What do you use?

    Hi Willy Pimentel,
No, not yet. Currently you have to use third-party apps for that. If you search the forums for tracing and similar terms you will find quite a few suggestions for apps/services you can use. We are considering adding a tracing tool assuming the dev team achieves the output quality they are aiming for but it will take quite some time until we get there.

Please guys this is not only an ideal tool it is absolutely necessary in any case. I am sure you can do it. I've installed the latest version of Affinity Design with so much hope that this would be done already, but... nothing still. Please, Please, try to fix this. Thank you.

"Select same" is actually often asked and needed feature. There is a long thread about it.
I think there is no gallup feature in this forum sw?

And again somebody, who declares his actual favourite feature to be a „rudimental“ and „fundamental“ one.
We finally should ask all the forum members, what are their 5 favourite features and urge the Affinity team to put all the results (I think, these are about 15000) „to the top of the list of features in the next (sic!) update“.

I have been searching for a while now, but cant find any "select same colour" feature. All I can find is a feature request post from 4 years ago asking for this. Surely this rudimental feature has been implimented by now. Selecting and replacing a colour is one of the main benefits of vector work, to not have this seems crazy to me. I know the dev team is small and  your product is so superior to Adobe is so many ways, but missing fundamental features like this makes it unusable for real world projects.
I hope I am being a dullard and a select same colour feature is available. If not please add it to the top of the list of features in the next update.

Hi, I am also new here. My only single problem at the moment with the a.d. is this, that "vector brushes" are not really vector brushes. They are raster brushes on a vector stroke. If you zoom in, you can see the pixels. I didn't downloaded the free version, I bought it instantly, since a friend showed me his works, and how he use the app (okay he do only pictures for the web, and some standard size book illustrations) Than I watched some tutorials people using these fines "vector" brushes, and how cool it is because you can use both vector and raster in one app.
But the truth is that you get a kind of good raster app with more advanced vector tools than photoshop has.
Now I almost spent another hundred bucks on my favorite brushes compatible with this software, but now I'm a bit skeptical about it, since the reason I bought this app is that it's vector software with additional raster options, but it isn't. So if I make this huge drawing and somehow I print it, what of course I don't know yet how it will be, than how it will look with all the pixel lines, and how it will work if it needs to change the size of my work to a huge one? Expanding them is good so I don't loose the quality of my brushes compared to my basic vector shapes, and I also have the guarantee that where the colored part of my stroke ends, it's transparent, no matter of the size, and you can also add them to a shape. You think that in the future this will change and if yes, that will be in the near future?
I tell you why, I would really enjoy to work with this software for many reasons. I do support the idea. But at the moment what I have is that I can use it like I would use photoshop, but If I buy my favorite vector brushes I use in a different app, I could use them also, but only their image, but in pixel. My original thought was, that I skip using other software for one in what I can do my vector job, my raster job, it's lighter, and much more fair for it's users. What it is more fair, if I look at the price of it, to be honest the whole thing costs like one single but serious brush pack for other software, so it's really fine, and I do respect this.
Anyways It's a great software , but this issue with the brushes would be great to change, or else or I loose quality on my work, or I use a different vector app in what a vector brush is a vector brush.
At least if it would be more compatible with for example a.i., than it wouldn't be such a huge problem, but If I understood well, I can't simply import a full layered a.i. file in what eventually I modify in A.D.
But than again I use two or three apps not one app what is better to use for a reason or two.

Hi is this still not a feature then in 2020? And what do you mean by the 'Basic Category (vector based)'? because ALL of them on the designer persona are vectors and so should be easily expandable. I went through a lot of them just now even the really basic looking ones and couldn't find any that expand.

I'm using the trial version and AD seems decent thus far. My question is regarding brush strokes. They do not expand as a regular stroke. When I apply a regular line stroke and select Layer>Expand Stroke it works. When I use a brush stroke instead of a line it does not expand.

    Help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

    Hi,

In PS to run a path along the currently selected brush you just select the path and then at the bottom of the paths palette there is a button. When clicked it runs the currently selected brush along the path.

It seems that Affinity Photo does not yet have this function. :)

I would really like this feature implemented as well.
I use it a huge amount when I'm doing the final stages of an artwork when I'm cleaning up all the lines and making everything look smooth.
A super important feature to not overlook is "simulate pressure". This is a feature in Photoshop's implementation that basically taperes the thickness of the line on either end of the path.
When I'm at the inking stage of my artwork, I draw a line with the pen tool, left-click, select "stroke path" and it strokes the path using my current brush settings (which includes "simulate pressure").
I can't fully make the switch to Affinity without this feature :(

I actually know nothing whatsoever about AP or AD other than they look like a pretty good contender to eventually break the Adobe monopoly over the software I need to use to make a living. Like all people who have been in this industry for a while and using the same software for 20+ years. You build up a tried and tested set of workflows and techniques. Changing is hard, changing costs you time and money so we try to make the transition from one to another as seamless as possible. Having the same but improved tools sets with extra goodies makes the process a lot easier for people who are already running and simply don't have the time to stop and relearn.

Running a brush along a vector path is quite a simple tool which has been around a long time in PS. There's no point me making the jump to AP until simple things like that have been included. I would then happily spend the next few months becoming accustomed to the new ways that AP does what it does.

Edit in command sounds interesting, but being in the file menu suggests to me that it means coming out of AP to edit your file? Even if that is easy I just need to run a brush along a path in my photo editing app. The process doesn't need to be complicated. Just select a path and a brush press a button and boom. Preferably exactly the way PS does it, but in AP. :)

    Hi guys,

Looking at making the jump form PS to Affinity photo and I'm just checking to see if the processes I use heavily are implemented in Affinity Photo. In PS you can stroke a path with a brush. Is this possible in Affinity photo?

    Thanks. :)

That function is not present in Photo. It is a Designer function that uses vector brushes, and Photo only uses raster brushes.
If you also own Designer you can accomplish it by opening your .afphoto file in Designer, or by using File > Edit in Designer. When done, you can transfer the file back to Photo with File > Edit in Photo. Or, if you have Designer and Publisher, and use Publisher as a workflow aid, you can switch from the Photo Persona to the Designer Persona to get that function, then just switch back to the Photo Persona when you're done.

Because Designer is easier in many tasks. I have even done jobs where I have drawn objects in Designer and copy-pasted them to Illustrator to use each apps strengths.
Besides, my CS5 will stop working at some time and I hope Designer can replace it at that time.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but any idea if this will be introduced at some point? Applying a raster stroke to follow a vector path (but on a seperate layer) is something you can do easily in Photoshop, seems strange that it can't be done in AP.

Procreate behaves the same as Affinity Photo in this respect (I know because I have it installed on my iPad) – just like every pixel artwork application that I've seem in my life.
That's not true. There are numerous ways you could alter the colors of your drawing afterwards, all of which won't require you to have the strokes on individual layers. One thing you could do is place a new Pixel layer above your drawing, change its blend mode to Hue or Color and then with a brush of your choice paint over the desired parts. Also, Affinity Photo has multiple adjustment options to edit colors: Just take a look at the HSL adjustment which is gerat for targeting individual color ranges of your image, or the Color Balance adjustment which you can use to tune colors by tonal range. Granted, the experience will differ from having each brush stroke individually accessible. But if you are not familiar with manipulating color in pixel images, I suggest you take the time to learn the basics, as you'd otherwise miss a ton of great features that can be very useful for vector work as well.
This is something you should try out yourself by downloading the trial version of Affinity Designer. From my experience, Designer is pretty good at handling huge amounts of layers, but of course, this also depends on the hardware it runs on.
