  1. I'm in the same boat - I've spent much time searching for a way to apply texture to an object without using a stroke. Unsuccessfully so far.

Whereas a search for how to do this in Adobe PS yielded the answer in the first video I found.

BTW, I doesn't seem to matter if using Designer or Photo. Neither of them have that function below the layers panel. If it's elsewhere, I yet have to find it.

  2. I actually haven't found a way to make this work in designer.

I would like to give an object a texured edge without applying a stroke (outline). This is important to me because often objects are too detailed to handle a stroke around them.

After spending much time searching for an answer for Affinity, I was so fed up and did a search for it on Adobe. The very first video I watched explains it within the first 2 minutes.

I'm in tears because I feel what I want to do is so basic, but when I do the same search for Affinity, I only get one result, posted in this forum, basically saying there is no way to do this. 😰

  3. Hi everyone,

I feel bad about having another question, but I searched around and didn't see it discussed elsewhere.

I'm in Affinity Designer and have applied a textured stroke to an object. If I change my mind and want to undo it later by setting the stroke to transparent, it turns black (see screenshot).

How do I get rid of the textured stroke, back to the original object? (Please note that I didn't use "Layer Effects -> Outline". I simply selected the object and went to a texture brush to get the textured outline.)

Many thanks in advance for your help. πŸ’›

  4. Hello,

I've been searching for a way to apply a brush stroke to existing shapes. The video below shows it can be done in Designer, but I can't find an equivalent for Photo. The method used in Designer does not work in Photo.

I'm also attaching an image showing what I mean. I would like to recreate the black lines - they are not masks; their edges are textured.

I'd appreciate anyone solving this problem.

The Assistant Options won't be of much help here because they can only be configured for painting with no layer selected. This means that you would have to do one (and only one!) brush stroke at a time, deselect all layers (which you could at least define a keyboard shortcut for) and then paint again to get the next brush stroke placed on a separate layer. I can't imagine anyone would want to paint like that. The question is: Do you really need to have every single brush stroke editable via its own layer? Or could you not make use of Affinity's selection, masking and erasing features? I've seen many illustrators use separate layers for each color, each shade or for differents parts of an image – but never for each brush stroke. If you really can't live without it, Designer is your only option I'm afraid.

Thank you so much for all your replies. Kaffeundsalz, thank you for the thourough answer. Right, I wouldn't want to paint that way. I don't have an iPad Pro to compare it to how Procreate does it (which seems to be a basic asset now). Since Carl123 wasn't sure what I meant by 'masks', here is an example. If I want to change any of the colors inside the mask, I can't because it's all one piece. So I will have to delete that brush layer and redo it. And if I use Affinity Designer, then I must soon be running out of memory as with Illustrator. :(

That sounds like a different situation than @MEB was describing. He really was talking about importing AI documents where the AI document has items that are outside the artboards.

For documents you create In AD, you have a choice of having an Artboard or not (in which case you have a Canvas).

    • If you have a Canvas, and you drag an item off of it, its visibility is controlled by the current status of View > View Mode > Clip to Canvas.
    • However, if you have an Artboard, objects that you drag completely outside of an artboard will always be visible. Objects that you drag partly outside an artboard will be partly visible.

Thank you so much, Walt, that's it! πŸ‘

  7. (I couldn't find this problem discussed - sorry if I missed it.)

I want to fill masks with many differently colored brush strokes. Turns out I can't seem to be able to edit (e.g. recolor) these brush strokes. I can add more strokes at any time, but I can't delete individual previous strokes, nor recolor them later.

For simplicity's sake, here is a screenshot of a basic example: just two brush strokes (without a mask), they always select as ONE item, even when double-clicking. They are on the same layer. Is that the problem? Do I have to paint every single new, differently colored brush stroke on a new layer in order for me to edit them later? That would be insane, as my illustrations are complex with many different strokes overlapping within masks. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.Unbenannt2.JPG.7a61f7ec4a9ac767bf237d6b099fe590.JPG

    HiΒ Mack2D2,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
The problem is objects placed outside the artboards in Illustrator are not included in the PDF stream which is the only data we are able to access in the Ai file. The rest is proprietary. So thereΒ isn't much we do can to improve things here unfortunately.

MEB, could you please clarify: From what I can see, the problem is unrelated to importing an AI file only. When creating a new file in Affinity Designer, and dragging objects from the artboard to the black area surrounding it, then the objects disappear. While still selected, an object's bounding boxes is still visible. But the *object* itself is not visible, and once I deselect, it's essentially lost in 'space'.

I have purchased AD & AP and I'm still in the process of converting from Illustrator. The issues keep piling up, reading in forums that there are no fixes. My workflow depends on having objects outside of the artboard. Also, I make repeating patterns, which is also facilitated by seeing beyond the artboard boundaries as all edges are being overlapped by artwork. So disappointing and discouraging.
