marcoborghesi got a reaction from Paul Mudditt in Affinity Designer 1.8 New features list?
Not a doubt that JGD has all the right to say what ever he wants we are in a free world. Maybe we need to consider that Serif is new as an Adobe competitor that shakes a bit the industries. At least for freelance. Im not one of those but i tested myself with packaging design at professional level. Yes been use to illustrator since version 2 using designer sometimes might be clumsy but when you learn how it works you can achieve a lot both on mac an iPad (although we don’t have an exact copy of the desktops version).
Just a little consideration on this whole conversation that is going on. When we facing new things it is always complicated. You have just to get used. I said to the my team's designers that sometimes things aren’t the way we want and if we are not happy if we don't like them than the door is open to leave.
the same here. There is always illustrator. I personally find affinity products really really good and well constructed and most important really reliable and performing really really well.
total respect though to JGD opinion. And total respect for Serif team.
Please just add our own spot colour and overprint option on ipad as well . Ihhihiihihhi

Totally agree. For me that i used mainly on iPad is really important that the swatch panel change. Just a few changes will make more effective.
A search field for example when navigating in the swatches panel like pantone for example. Otherwise you have to scroll through all the colours.
I love Affinity app and I'm happy were things are going. I think the only suggestion I can give is to keep up with the speed of update. The app world is change and people will change so quickly if they don't get what they looking for and it would be a disaster in my opinion if we will love Affinity apps during the journey. They add competition in the market but the market is also so unstable in the recent here.
Anyway. I'm always on Affinity side just because the gave me a chance to choose and to choose something that makes me productive.
But of course i fell there are still a lot of things to improve to the iPad. At least to give us the same features of the desktop.

+1 on the ability to create, use and modify global colours.
I've recently got a hold of an iPad and discovered this issue. Kind of a show stopper since I use them extensively... I also noticed you can't use swatches, even the normal kind, in layer effects such as Colour Overlay...
I honestly think the swatches panel needs a big overhaul, both desktop and iPad. I mean just have a look at the how the Swatches panel works on Illustrator and copy it, then sprinkle a bit of InDesign features into it and you have a perfect panel. No need to reinvent the wheel.
I'm always puzzled on how these things happen, Adobe's swatches panels are widely known, there's no way the team didn't know them. It's almost like they decide on a meeting that "we know these panels works great, so instead let's make something similar, but that works worse!"

    Hi marcoborghesi,

Unfortunately these are two known issues that are with development: That Bleeds on artboards don't display or update, and also that they don't get exported when using Document > Export. I'll get these bumped with development.

I’m pleased to see that we have hexadecimal colour input now, but we still need the ability to search for colours, and we also need spot and overprint options.

Hi there. First of all a huge thank you to the great Affinity team with this 1.7 release is another amazing huge step for professional people like me that decide do work just on mobility on iPad.
I read that the bug of not displaying the bleed on an exported PDF is already taking into consideration. I have few suggestion for the team.
As a packaging designer I’m missing the spot and overprint option for colours. Would be great if we can like the desktop version select the option when we create a colour.
Another great suggestion would be the option to search for colour instead of scrolling through the long Pantone list for example.
3 simple extra feature that would make the app on iPad complete or at least closer to the desktop. Well also these are really important feature for productivity.
Hope anyone will reply and share the same needs.
if I have to pay a full desktop price to get the same complete complete experience I would ... as a pro it’s important for me to be able to work in the same way you can do on a desktop but on my iPad!

Hi Dan C thank you so much for your reply. Really appreciate you are really open of suggestions.
Thank you for the explantion on the spot. Now it does make sense. Well I hope this will be a urgent addition to the ipad version too otherwise as graphic designers we will be a bit tied on our work as you know for sure that it’s a really important feature.
Also hoping to see really soon too the overprint function. Still as graphic designers you can’t have an ipad with this feature.
Can’t wait the to see the next update and have the PDF bleed fixed.
Thank you so much anyway for the great work.

    Professional Printing
Full CMYK handling and ICC profiles Spot colours (for desktop only) What do we mean? I did a PDF with Pantone on my iPad and it does show the right pantone separations. Can we explain this?  Overprint controls (for desktop only) This is so important for designers. When this will be implemented on the iPad.  Trim, bleed and crop marks New  Bleed preview Bug on the PDF export hopefully soon fixed Guys, I can't say how pleased we are all with this but I also want to point out (again) that on iPad graphic designer are left out with important features that are on the desktop. Please don't forget that you have a lot of people that are finding great and useful to for on iPad. There is an evolution of how to be a graphic designer that doesn't always require a Mac/Windows desktop/laptop.
So hope we can see soon: Pantone swatch search feature, overprint, PDF export bleed fixed, linked images (both iPad and desktop) instead of embedded images. These just a few.
Said that you are great and hope critics will be well accepted as compliments and also that some response will be given to Graphic designers.
    Best

Can you say whether the 1.7 updates for the iPad apps will include any of the 1.6 desktop features which are missing from the 1.6 iPad versions? I’m thinking in particular of the Coverage Map control and hexadecimal colour code input, but there are probably numerous other features which are currently only available in the desktop apps.

Hello everyone. Testing Affinity Publisher on mac alongside Indesign make me wondering to do the switch as soon as the Beta is closed and the software released.
I can't say how great this is looking and how great is the idea to have finally an alternative to Adobe. I'm using on my iPad also and in general when not in the office.
For sure one desire is to see the iPad version to be identical to the desktop. Bleed, overprint etc on Design just to mention something. Also would be nice an iPad version of Publisher.
I'm also suggesting that if we are talking of design suite I really miss an alternative to Adobe Acrobat. You can find many but they all missing a PRINT PRODUCTION functionality.
Wonderful team at Affinity (Serif) can you think about it and have a consideration about it?

I would love to see a Separations Preview in Affinity Publisher.  I work for a commercial printer and need to see how the plates will separate, also being able to overprint is needed as well, I haven't seen how to enable that.

Whould be nice, if you explain what you mean with „tabulation“ If you think of placing tabs in a text – it is already there:
Go to menu „View/Show Text Ruler" Place a text cursor into a text frame – > The text ruler is shown. Click into the ruler to place a tab. Right click onto a tab mark to adjust the tab.

    Hello @marcoborghesi,
basically this functionality is already there. You can create an empty layer with the icon at the bottom right and drag those objects that are supposed to be in (or on) the same layer in there. You can rename and color this layer with right click > properties.
You can add new objects to the layer by clicking on an object in the layers panel and creating a new object. This will then be part of the containing layer.
