  1. Thanks John. I'm sure that is wise - in testing I can set my document resolution to a decent number and drop in images of a higher resolution and get them exported at that resolution, which is comforting. But I do like to know all the ins and outs. If possible.
  2. Thanks Brian. I have read the help files but am none the wiser. Hopefully someone who knows will come along and help out.
  3. Does anyone have any further comments? This aspect is quite unintuitive for someone coming from Quark or Indesign. If the Document DPI sets what resolution things get rasterised at what does the Raster DPI setting do in the PDF export options?
  4. I don't know - the image will have a resolution at a particular size (eg 9cm2 wide at 72dpi or 4.5mm2 at 144dpi). I come from a print background so I am aware of the relationship between resolution and physical size. In Quark/Indesign a document has no resolution - images are placed at a particular size and that defines their resolution on output (ignoring any downsampling that occurs when exported). I am not complaining that AP doesn't work like Indesign but I need to understand how it does work.
  5. Hi all I have a question that is relevant for both Affinity Publisher v2 (just installed) and also v1.10 (which I have kept installed). Can someone explain to me please the difference between the Document/Layout DPI which you choose when you first create a document (I'll refer to it as the Document DPI from here on out) and the Raster DPI which is part of the export options? I'm only interested in exporting to PDF. I know a resolution that any 'Unsupported properties' will be rasterised at on output needs to be set but I'm unsure which of these settings it is and the relationship between the two. I'm not really clear why a document resolution needs to be set when a document is created since stuff will only get rasterised on output (where there are rasterisation options). So as you can see I'm confused! I'm coming to AP from Quark and Indesign. Many thanks, Iain
  6. Thanks lacerto. We could flatten the transparency of any placed PDFs outside of Affinity if required, which is fine for one or two but would be a problem if there were lots. Thanks for illuminating these issues.
  7. That's interesting - I didn't know that. Thank you, I will have a play with the settings.
  8. Thanks. I appreciate the difference between PDF-X standards and PDF versions. I was trying to say the preflight warning made it sound like it was a problem with PDF versions ("Placed PDF Version (PDF-1.4) is not compatible with the PDF export version") which it wasn't. The warning seems a bit misleading, to me. We want flattened transparency so PDF/X-1a:2003 is perfect for us.
  9. Thank you, that is very helpful. I just made a non-PDF/X 1.4 file and sure enough my PDF passed through okay. At least now we have a way to make it work even if it means changing our settings. Thanks, Iain
  10. Hi all Running Publisher 1.10.5.1342 on Windows 10. Can someone please help me understand why I can’t get a PDF file to passthrough without getting rasterised in my output PDF? I’ve done a lot of searching on the forum but no suggestions I have seen, or anything I have tried, have worked. I have preflight warning that the “Placed PDF Version (PDF-1.4) is not compatible with the PDF export version”. My export settings are set to PDF/X-1a:2003 (which makes a PDF 1.4 file), so I don’t understand the preflight warning. I have tried the following things to the placed PDF file; creating outlines of the text, flattening any transparency, saving to PDF 1.3. None have had any success. NB I definitely want these files to passthrough and not be interpreted. Passthrough is selected in the toolbar. Many thanks, Iain
  11. Old Bruce - you're quite right. A distinction I was overlooking. Thanks Lagarto - Thanks for your detailed explanation. The fact that it shows differently on Mac/PC when using PDF/X-1a was throwing me, but what you say makes sense.
  12. Hi Can someone explain please exactly what the "Convert image colour spaces" option in the PDF export options actually does? The help file says "when checked, all placed images will convert to the colour space chosen on export (as set in the Profile option above). When unchecked, the colour space of the imported placed image is honoured." I interpret that to mean if I have a load of images with different profiles in my document, if that option is ticked they will all get converted to the output profile when exported to PDF. If the option is unticked they will not get converted and remain with their original profiles. The results do not reflect that in Windows (v1.9.0.932). Tested in a document which is CMYK with a profile of FOGRA51 and then exported it as a PDF/X-3 file to the FOGRA51 profile. I have placed an image with the FOGRA52 profile. Regardless of whether the "Convert image..." (CI) option is ticked or unticked the image in my PDF retains the FOGRA52 profile, not the FOGRA51 profile that was my destination profile. What I really want to do is export a PDF/X-1a file. On Windows when I choose PDF/X-1a from the Compatibility section in the PDF export options the "Convert image colour spaces" option is greyed out, unticked. That it is greyed out makes sense as PDF/X-1a everything must be converted to the destination profile. That gives a PDF where the image is converted to the output profile. Which is good. However when I try the same on the Mac (trial version 1.9.0) when I select PDF/X-1a from the Compatibility section in the PDF export options the "Convert image colour spaces" option is greyed out again, but ticked. When the PDF is made the results seem the same as the Windows PDF which once again makes me wonder exactly what the "Convert image colour spaces" option in the PDF export options actually does! Can anyone advise on my problem? I assume the different behaviour between Windows and Mac is a bug which will be ironed out. Many thanks, Iain
  13. Hi It would be good if there was a way to export (and import) the PDF export presets I have made within Publisher. Professional printers often share their settings (ie Indesign .joboptions files) for clients to use. Thanks, Iain
  14. Thanks Walt. I am indeed on Windows and I can see my preset name listed in the .dat file. Obviously if I share that file with another user it will include all my presets (rather than the one I wish to share), plus if they replace that file on their system they will lose any presets they had configured. It's a shame there is no option for exporting/importing these things (like there was in PagePlus) as professional printers like to share their presets to clients - it could help with the software's uptake in that market. I think I will add it as a feature request! Anyway, thanks again Walt. Iain
  15. Hi Just started using Affinity Publisher but I can't find a way to export (or import) the PDF export presets I have made within Publisher. Is this feature available? If not available through the interface can I find the preset file on my system and supply it to another user to drop into their location so they can use it? Many thanks, Iain
