PurpleFish got a reaction from Hatchman in DXF or DWG file import in Affinity Designer
While a business should always have their own strategic view as to the features they wish to add, would it really be so bad to add features that the user base is clamouring for via the only avenue of request open to us?

Charging for this is silly especially with the added comment about inkscape and open source stuff this isnt rocket science compared to even the rest of the tools in affinity designer. Thats the part that is silly to me. This is the perfect example of affinity having blinders on in terms of priorities.
Also, way more people want dxf than people who make accounts specifically to post here. You cannot think this is the total user base, this is just the user base who gave enough of a hoot to make accounts they otherwise never would have just to pile on to this ONE needed feature. Chew on that  im one of them too.

all that said , AFFINITY IF YOU ARE READING THIS PLEASE DO IT ILL TOTALLY PAY JUST DO IT SO I CAN DELETE ADOBE FOR GOOD. THIS IS THE ONLY THING HOLDING MOST OF US BACK.

Well given Inkscape is open source perhaps your developers should download the source code and take a look for some inspiration.

I need to get DXF vector data into AD. I do so using various workarounds involving conversions in one or another app to PDF or SVG.  AD does not do well importing SVG, so PDF is most useful. All of this could be alleviated with direct AD support for DXF. It is  disappointing that a product that seems to do so well in so many areas seems weak on import/export. Anyway, another vote for adding native DXF support.

Yep, plus one to that mate. I'm familiar enough with the software landscape to agree with you 100%.
This seems like an integration you'd give to an intern to prototype then submit a Pull Request.

    It's definitely edited.
Just need to get this through their head. I do not want to be their backseat driver.... but If I see them making a wrong turn on a one way street, I'm definitely going to say something about it.
What is so mind boggling, is that the actual integration of this is not something that would take more than 1-2 days to implement, and maybe 4-5 days of testing.
I know this because I am very familiar with the OpenDXF/DWG libraries, I have them already compiled into a process that checks my folder now to see if any svg files are saved, and once any svg file hits the folder it automatically has the dxf version of it with the same name next to it. It does an excellent job in automatically converting it to it's exact ratios and dimensions, when opened in AutoCAD its recognized as a native format and all elements are still there with their native shapes and object types and layers and grouping. And it didn't take longer than 1 hour to fully understand the deserialization of the vector format and use the DXF libraries to serialize them back into a perfect DXF format, and create a FS listener to check for files and apply this method to them.
In addition to my donation, I would even offer the development time to do it myself for them, but they do not have a public plugin system nor would they share their closed course code, so that is why I'm just asking nicely for them to do it. It really is a frustrating situation when you are at the mercy  of someone else because you  need to play by their rules, but then their rules are having a negative impact on your lifestyle.
They have a lot of priorities yes, but they do not understand the impact of this particular feature. Like really. If they know the truth, then I have no doubt in my mind that they would actually drop every single thing they are doing and put all their developers on this item and this item only.

    I'll throw in 200€.
    Affinity Designer NEEDS dwg/dxf import/export.
Affinity Designer is such a wonderful piece of sofware. And dwg/dxf the most used vector format in professional applications.
Here in Italy (land of design) people do exactly this kind of workflow. Draw plans, sections, details in CAD. Afterwards this documents get refinded in Illustrator (for competitions, clients, homepages, catalogues).
Once they implement dwg/dxf import/export AD will becoma a game changer. I am 100% sure. In my opinio they should get this done before someone else comes along.

Ok it seems that there are no incentives to get you to finally get this feature in, so I would like to know if making a donation of $20,000 would help change your mind and actually introduce this ability in the software stack. I understand that this is not that much money compared to to your regular expenses, but please accept my offer to show a genuine need for this.
Just to get a little bit of a background, I have tried several several CAD programs, unfortunately they are all horrible applications, and honestly I would not be surprised if they were built all off of the same engine, because they behave exactly the same, are extremely clunky and the performance on every single one of them is horrible. (I have a 24core xeon Mac Pro with 128GB of RAM and 2 extremely high end video cards... so this is not because of my hardware, I assure you) I enjoy the affinity program and the tools it offers, but I need to be able to export my technical drawings with their dimensional information and I cannot at the moment.
To say that this is a necessary feature is an understatement, I actually NEED this to run my business and the workarounds to get this done are laughable and very cost inefficient.\
Please, at least say if you rally are going to release this and if its anytime soon, I really want to use this program.

I have had this disappointing response back on Twitter. Very disappointing as this feels like a feature that would perhaps take a week for a good dev to add in as there are already code libraries that do this that would just need integrating in. As with anything I think the more people that ask for it the more likely it will be to happen. May I suggest that anyone who would like this keeps adding comments here and from time to time keep asking politely on Twitter for an updated ETA.
