    T V got a reaction from aitchgee in [Affinity Photo] Procedural Texture beginner formula info
    Hi Everyone,
    I have been on a mission to fill the void in the Macro environment by the lack of gradient support.  To this end I was introduced to Procedural Texture and saw some possibilities and started tinkering.  The manifestation of this can be found in several working groupings of R,G,B Vignettes and Linear gradient macros uploaded in the Resource section that I will update as interesting developments occur.
    In this, I will attempt to break down some of the math and show you how I am attempting to work around my limited knowledge of geometry(has been a while since trig) to make this accessible to the beginner who wants to implement some control over the basic examples and give some direction over how to navigate this powerful tool.  If you would like some immediate video immersion of outstanding examples, that I may start from or point to, see Graphicxtras.com on youtube.
    If anyone has anything to add/correct/questions, comments, etc. please jump in...this is only meant as a supplement to the Affinity Photo Procedural Texture help section that can leave the beginner a little overwhelmed.
    So, here is the first installment of my experiences.  And certainly, if anyone wants to use these explanations in video format please feel free...just post a link for everyone to see it.
    Procedural Texture 101
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procedural_texture
    These are some common definitions of elements of an equation
    w = width of document
    h = height of document
    x = horizontal axis
    y = vertical axis
    rx = relative x(position) to upper left hand corner expressed as (0,0) horizontal axis (rx,0)
    ry = relative y(position) to upper left hand corner expressed as (0,0) vertical axis (0,ry)
    R = red channel
    G = green channel
    B = blue channel
    A = alpha channel
    Relative x and y  (rx,ry)
    x and y coordinates can also be specified as values relative to any starting point on the screen or any subset of the screen such as an image. On the Web, each clickable area of an image map is specified as a pair of x and y coordinates relative to the upper left-hand corner of the image.
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian_coordinate_system
    osc(input, parameter)
    The following syntax follows the typical convention of function(input, parameter) where the function( = osc )
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave_function
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave_equation
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscillation_(mathematics)
    osci(input, parameter)
    This function example represents the oscillation over the set (in this case an interval) of the function( = osci )
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interval_(mathematics)

    This example is formula from the Checkered preset
    osci(rx*c/w,ry*c/w)    variable   c(Z)   produces squares
    + addition of variable a(Z) to control vertical axis
    osci(rx*c/w,ry*a/w)    c(Z)  produces horizontal rows  a(Z) produces vertical rows
    example.  c=0 (no horizontal rows)
                      c=1 (1 horizontal row)
                      c=25 (25 horizontal rows)
                      c=5, a=5  (square with the size of 5 rows horiz and 5 rows vert)(effectively enlarging 5x larger than (1x1)
                      c=5, a=1  (rectangle with the size of 5 rows horiz and 1 row vert)
                      etc.
    See video example of procedural texture squares at Graphicxtras.com

    I will update with macros of these examples as I go along, or if you want to get started go to procedural texture and find the checkered preset and start experimenting.

    I asked in forums and the response was yes.  Template format is not restricted to OS.  😀

    Did not work for me on Windows when I tried it earlier.

    Are you dragging on the text "Opacity:" in the Curves window, or on the number field showing the opacity %?

    @Old Bruce says drag on the word. I responded that it didn't work for me.
    Since you asked, dragging on the number doesn't work, either.

    Oh well. I guess it works there on Macs but not Windows.
    Does it work for you elsewhere, like in the Transform panel when dragging on the H, W, X, or Y text?

    Yes, it works in panels. But not in Adjustments (at least, not in the Curves adjustment dialog).

    Here on Mac I just click on the word Opacity and can drag from left to right to decrease or increase the %. Also works for the various other fields. Click and drag on the Labels, not in the field.

    And now you know that you can't adjust that field by dragging the mouse that way

    Dragging any highlighted text into an Affinity document will create a text frame with that text in it
    Try it with something like Notepad and you will see what is happening

    To see if I understand what you did: You selected a piece of text (the opacity percentage), and dragged it on top of the actual image.
    That sounds like a kind of drag/drop operation to me, just as if you had copied/pasted some text onto your image, or dragged some text out of a text editor and dropped it onto your image. I would say that creating a text layer is a perfectly good result when you drop text onto the image, no matter where the text came from.
    I would not think it's a bug.

    Yes.
    On both Windows and Mac you configure Photo to know where Templates are stored, by using the "add folder" icon at the bottom of the Templates dialog in File > New.
    On iPad, you simply navigate to wherever the Template happens to be stored; there's no configuration involved like there is on Windows and Mac.

    I don't have iPad and I don't need it.
    I am a Windows user. I have been using it since 1995...
    I guess Affinity made its app in such a way that a template done in Windows to be usable in any other OS.

    I do not have an Ipad, but, I am assuming that .aftemplates have an easier time being used over macros for options like proceedural textures that can take alot of processing power.  Templates, however, seem to be more difficult for me to keep organized and remember how I used them.  Perhaps, I just need to get an Ipad to push myself a little harder into a more organized space... 😂

    Thx. I tried almost all adjustments. Some of them are good for some pictures, others aren't so good. It depends by the picture, what that picture shows, what you want to get from that picture.

    Hi,

    Starting from the below video done by GraphicalFinity I made two dithering templates, vertical and horizontal.
    Each template has the same structure:
     1. background image, named Replace me!. Put your image above this layer,  then delete it.
    2.Channel Mixer Adjustment, make any tweaks needed for your image.
    3. Dithering layer, hidden by default. If you want to apply any effect to it, make it visible. Apply any effect (see video), then make the Pattern dithering layer (see video). Before that, delete the initial Pattern dithering layer (4).
    4.Pattern dithering layer, see video how to create it.
    5. Treshold Adjustment, no tweaks needed.

    was thinking analogous...tis ok because you can have as many Hue masks as you want and can be used together in a mask stack...Same with combining the different Live Masks!

    It is ok to have 30'. It covers the wheel colors entirely.

    Glad to hear its working out well.  I can see a bit better after playing with it that there is something there!
    Blend Options could use some presets 😉

    I played with Band Pass. It worked nicely. With some tweaks, starting from presets, you can get exactly what you want. It depends on the adjustment you choose. I used fir testing Brightness and Contrast adjustment, and High Pass live filter.
    Thx again for your effort in doing all these presets!

    I can see a need for separate .propcol files for these live masks.  Right now the 3 live masks presets are stored together.  Hue Live Mask deserves more preset categories...IMO...it could get alot better!  Alot of work in this... has been very mind expanding considering the focus puzzle factor.
    Tune in, turn on, drop out, do Affinity - T V
