rumo reacted to michaelschutz in Publisher v2 - GREP styles
There's been a longstanding request in the Publisher v1 forum to add GREP into Text styles. I was excited to see the announcement about v2 but saddened to see this didn't make it in. Since the feature isn't there (yet? ) and since those v1 forums are being archived, I'm bringing the request into this new forum to keep it alive.
For a specific kind of technical document I work with, there are dozens of types of replacements that need to happen on the text in new docs, within one text style. Having the GREP expressions in the style definition makes all of these replacements happen in one click of applying a style, rather than a laborious effort to do them individually.
I understand that this isn't a mainstream feature, but it's so, so helpful to those that need it. Since the engine is already in the software, it seems like it shouldn't be a huge deal to be able to attach GREP search/replace expressions into a text style. I could be wrong, of course, as I'm not a developer. But I (and many others) would very much appreciate this coming in a new update.

@claidheamdanns I fully agree with your point of view. Without GREP styles I still miss a crucial tool. Whenever a project requires more then basic typography, like kerning punctiation or other microadjustments, I am lost without Indesign.
I was told that the staff has it on their list, but that was two years ago.

I keep coming back to this topic, hoping to see movement on it. At work we still use Adobe, but at home I don’t.

At work, I use GREP in styles Every. Single. Day.
Many of my documents at home had GREP in styles built into them, back in the days when I used Adobe. All this was lost, coming to Affinity. Was moving to Affinity the right choice? Absolutely. Do I still wish GREP was implemented in styles. Absolutely.

Any time you have repetitive, predictable, pattern-based formatting, that is a job for GREP in styles. Set and forget. Let the program do the mundane, allowing the human to focus on the parts the program cannot.

+1. Came across this today. This is a basic typography feature, not something worth some kind of workaround. Looks like the more I use Publisher, the more I ran into those "missing basic typography features".

+1 . You can’t do sophisticated typography without it.

If you have gone back in the History, and you do something that adds a new entry to the History, you should see a branching icon added to the History entry that you were on previously. This allows you to toggle between the current History and an alternative future. Just click it, and you should be back to the version of History you were in before.

Has this one been solved yet? Came across it recently and thought it would be my printer. Then prints from Apple Preview turned out to be fine, as always. So I ended up doing the same workaround as @Johannes.

Temporarily press the space bar to hide the "disturbing blue lines". History is not affected

    Thanks for supplying the font.
We've taken a look into this and believe we are interpreting the font according to spec, but I've logged a feature request for us to add something similar to InDesigns World Ready Composer to help with this.

Of course not ;). It is a pre-production version and some joints still need to be smoothed out. But that is not related to the problem I have with Publisher.

No need for shouting. I am asking for this as well. It is just way more convenient to have this kind of generators baked into AFpub. Especially since Indesign has it for years, and that’s what Serif competes with.

Dominic, I apologize. It just struck me that I was too harsh earlier, even before I read your post. You’re completely right to correct me here and I thank you for that. I rewrote my lines above. It is okay to be somewhat emotional here, but it’s of no use when you’re not helpful at the same time.

    Hi,
I know that this is not something related to support and troubleshooting. But 2020 comes to an end and has been rough for most of us professional designers, photographers, artists…and I just wanted to say thank you to the Affinity staff. When the corona crisis hit us, you gave a generous discount of 50% for the complete Affinity software suite. Even more, you literally gave it away for free for students and to many more due to the three months test period. This is nothing I take for granted and made me finally quit my Adobe CC subscription.
It is not only about software, it is the way we treat people, the way we treat each other in this crazy time.
    Thanks,
    Johannes
