Amazing Work! I really can't get myself to believe that it is the vector art and not a photograph of the real car! So Realistic!

We have made fixes/improvements to this area (Panning/Zooming is slow when some fonts are selected) of the program in the latest customer beta. If you would like to try these changes the beta software is available in the forum posts listed below.
The latest beta builds are downloadable from links at the top of each of these beta forum posts.
Affinity Photo 1.8.1.611 for Windows Affinity Photo 1.8.2.174 for Mac Affinity Designer 1.8.1.611 for Windows Affinity Designer 1.8.2.4 for Mac Affinity Publisher 1.8.2.619 for Windows Affinity Publisher 1.8.2.619 for Mac These betas install parallel, next to the release version (they do not overwrite your release) and so the fixes can be tried in the beta without affecting your normal workflow in the release version.
Once these programs have been through a full beta process the change will be released in a future free 1.8.1/1.8.2 update/patch to all customers.

This was changed to avoid slowdown that was being caused by poorly made fonts with 1000's of nodes, however I can understand how it might be hard to realise when you do/don't have objects selected so I will get it passed on to development.

My main complicated drawings are taking ages so I thought I would work on a few easier ones at the same time. This is the first to be finished.
For me Gulf Racing is the most iconic colour scheme in motor racing and I’ve been meaning to do a 917 but never got around to it until now. Unsurprisingly there aren’t a whole lot of overhead shots of it so this was based on photos of the 1:8 scale die cast model by Amalgam Collection. Very high end, about £10k but bespoke can apparently cost up to £120k. Not something to let the kids play with. 
On the Porsche 917K’s public debut at the 1970 Daytona 24 Hours, John Wyer's Gulf-sponsored team finished 1-2 in the race. The winning number 2 car driven by Pedro Rodríguez, Leo Kinnunen and Brian Redman broke the distance record by 190 miles.

A template is a predetermined document with a consistently applied set of parameters, it’s just a quick way to create a basic document. 
A blank document is not much different other than you can have anything you want in it, so you can add a text file, an image and save it as Joe Bloggs awesome template, all you have to do initially is remember to Save as

As far as I know, the main difference between a file and a template is that a template can be added to the “File → New” dialog.
I don’t think there is any extra functionality in a template that you don’t get in a file.
This may not be true in the future if extra functionality is added so it’s worth checking the update logs in the relevant forum sections when you update the applications.
