  1. The explanation of grids in help was good but for changing colors you get the following:

    To customize grid color:

From the Grid context toolbar, tap the Grid or Divisions line swatch (left and right, respectively) to display a pop-up panel to set the line color(s)

I can usually work from context but I don’t understand “grid context toolbar” or “grid or divisions line swatch”

Could someone point them out on the attached screenshot?

    Thanks

  2. Fair enough. I’ll try the things you suggested.

I’m now pretty much convinced that I’m playing the fool trying to use iPad for any kind of serious work. I really like AD a lot but the Desktop version seems to be Serif’s sole focus and I’ll be heading there from now on. Don’t like Illustrator’s UI and both Lightroom and Photoshop for the IPad are useless, for too many reasons to detail. It’s all a dirty shame because the basic vector editing capability of AD combined with the Apple Pencil is really nice. Sadly  there are too many important things missing/broken and apparently no intention to add/fix them. I wish Serif had just put an label on it saying: “Just a toy“ and saved me the trouble of having to find out through long trial and error.

Ah well, you can’t always get what you want.

  3. I have now spent many hundreds of hours using AD for iPad using an Apple Pencil and iPad Pro 12.9. It has been mostly a great pleasure. There is no other iOS app that comes close to it for doing vector graphics and it’s pixel persona is fine for all but a few things which can be finished up in Photoshop. (Affinity Photo is good also but I’m so used to good old Photoshop I haven’t really pursued it.) I understand that Adobe is promising an iOS version of  illustrator, but they have a lot of catching up to do to match AD, and if Photoshop for iPad is any indication I’m not holding my breath.

So kudos to the design team!

But... (I’m sure you could see this coming) there are a few strange behaviors and omissions that prevent it from being a 5 star app (call it 4.5 at present) So....

    1) A minor issue, but a significant waste of time, no way to turn off spell check in settings. Yes, it can be turned off in the Text Studio burger menu. But it has to be turned off on EVERY entry. To add insult to injury when you deselect spellcheck, Guides are turned on. So that’s several unnecessary clicks, including turning off guides again on every entry. I realize that this issue has been raised repeatedly, but it doesn’t seem like it should be much effort to put it in settings.

    2) No rulers. Bad deficiency. I need to know precise  measurements for documents.

    3) The units seem stuck on points. In settings there is “Text in points” and “Lines in points”. What if I want it in pixels or inches? Some adjustments can be done in pixels but the main display remains in points.

    4) Dragging layers to arrange order is error prone. Very easy to miss your target. Which can make the object disappear into the ozone. Thank God for undo.

    5) Here’s the one that makes me scream. When editing text I select the text string. But if there are several paragraphs in the selection the virtual keyboard pops up and covers the target. And (this is the problem) when I try to use 2 fingers to bring it into view, it snaps back behind the keyboard. What is this about? Maddening.

As always I know I may be missing something, so I’d be happy to know if I can get results another way.

  4. Attached are two exports from a file I created for a class on font design. Looking at the bottom of the “i” there is a distinct displacement between the first (showing my intent) and second export. This effect is produced by resizing the canvas with a pinch. Unless I am missing something here this is one for the design team./

  5. Is ram usage referring to limits specific to AD or is it an OS limit of ram allocation to apps? I  j have a new  a new IPad with 1 TB ram, so no overall lack of ram, but I have no clear  idea how iOS  manages memory.  Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Also, could this be specific to my current project? Anybody with experience of the how and why of AD crashing? Last time I .

  6. When editing a project I find that trying to select a curve with the pencil only works sometimes. There’s no pattern to it. (Assuming that another curve within the group it belongs too has already been selected). This is annoying because I have to find the curve in the layers studio and often it is one curve in a group of 20 or 30 that all look pretty much the same. Any auggestions?

Also, when working with  the pencil I find that hand contact will often select whole regions, also very annoying. I was under the impression that the app was capable of ignoring the hand and recognizing finger and pencil. What’s up with that?

  7. I have never taken text seriously before and am having trouble getting It to look consistent. I inputted a number of text fields without paying too much attention to detail. Now I want the size, spacing and font to be the same from field to field. So I select text and apply The same font and point size to all. And they are not close to being the same. Not that simple? What am I missing here?

  8. A project I am working on for no a parent reason can no longer be edited in the pixel persona. Vector layers are fine. A saved earlier version of the same project is OK. But when I try to erase or paint on an existing (or new) pixel layer NOTHING HAPPENS. I’ve tried all the obvious checks: I’m using a simple round brush, 50 pixels wide, opacity, flow and hardness set to 100% in pixel persona/layer  pure white on transparent background. Protect alpha is turned off. I tried backing up through History as far as I could to no effect.
I tried restarting the app. Existing pixel layers can be turned on and off but  cant be painted or erased. As I said, an earlier iteration of the same project is AOK.

I have seen this kind of behavior before, but it fixed itself after a while So what are my options? I am unable to put finishing touches on a project that I put 20 hours into. VERY frustrating.

  9. Something else to watch out for:

AD on my iPad Pro was, after a lot of use,  taking up 60 Gb of memory. No way to tell what it was using this for. There is a no way to reclaim this memory except to uninstall/reinstall the app. This works, but watch out!

Any customization done is lost in the process. All of the new brushes I had imported had to be re-installed, so make sure any assets or add-ons you need are saved in the cloud or on a desktop machine. The really annoying side effect is that in uninstalling the app, the Affinity Designer folder in “On My IPad” is deleted. I lost several source files this way. No way to get them back. So again, be sure all your files are backed up externally before you do this.

iOS will not be a mature OS until the administrator (in practice the end user) has access to all the files used by the app. Professional users need to own and manage ALL of their data.
