“Pasteboard” seems to be a better name than “Artboard Background”, which is quite confusing.
But then, what would the “Background” be called (when artboards are not being used)?A little ‘tightening of the terminology’ wouldn’t go amiss here I think.
Yup, my bad, was unaware of the terminology, but frankly I can’t imagine why anyone would be confused since simply changing the colour of the artboard background as opposed to the “pasteboard” is elementary af.

….uuucks!
Can you please include an vectorize tool, and compatible format with settings that allow us to export as is, without having to rent this pos app just because most clients and other professionals are idiots.
If anyone knows of a format and certain settings to export for AI without having to tweak in AI, I would be most grateful. Thanks!
PS the last time I threw shade at adobe on this forum, I had an adobe shill try to undermine my position… please don’t waste your time.

There was a conspiracy theory doing the rounds, that Adobe will buy Affinity, and that is why there is no news available on v2. Adobe likes to buy competitors out and then bury the software to eliminate competition.
Let’s hope that Serif shows them the middle digit. As I said above, AI is inferior…. at least on the ipad.

If you are talking about the perspective tool, it is OK but you can only export to bitmap format
There is a mesh warp. In a stretch I use a raster to vector export function on adobe capture…. which if memory serves is free. it’s a workaround, but that may help.

I add my +1 for this feature as well.
As someone who tries to make a living being an iPad-only user, I do not have the free alternatives listed above (in a very unpleasant and aggressive manner). In fact there are no good true vector distort tool alternatives for iPad at all.
Please don’t forget about us. All the best!
I recently payed for AI for the ipad, yup, you guessed it, no vector distort. It was also vastly inferior to AD, less intuitive interface, less features. Also made me less inclined to grumble about Designer… still empathize with ya tho…. It is a pain.

Hello Serif. In 2014 you mentioned a "Mesh warp/distort tool" in your roadmap. How's that coming along? It's September 2022 and we still need a non-destructive vector distort tool please.
It exists. In AP, I’m assuming their announcement was referring to that program specifically.

If you look at the Layers Studio you can see that the artboard (i.e. the background) definitely is an object!
If I were to say you were wrong about that I would be lying, but alas, I wasn’t referring to the artboard itself, I was referring to the artboard background, and no amount of i.e’s are going to persuade me otherwise I’m afraid. I’m going to go out on a limb and assume I was right that it couldn’t be altered after all, and that serif should either keep it the same shade as a normal document background, or allow us to alter it ourselves. Again, though happy to be wrong. Here’s a further pictorial example aaaajustincase.

It isn’t specific to artboards. An artboard is merely a special kind of layer/object, so (just like, say, a rectangle) you can simply select it and apply a fill colour.
Yeah, I don’t think we’re on the same page, this is what I’m referring to, the background is definitely not an object. But happy to be wrong.

An artboard can have any fill colour you like (applied via the Colour Studio).
Thanks man. I don’t suppose you can do me a favor and lmk where in the studio, for the life of me I can’t see any options referring to the artboard background. Cheers!

@Mark Freemanjust read this whole post on why integrating rulers is funny
What, because it’s not going to happen? Well I understand your position, but you expressed it like a w******. I have personally found it frustrating ref the lack of response to certain issues, but to find out that AD on the ipad is superior to AI was refreshing, the latter doesn’t have free transform either, so the only other big one is rulers. That was my point, but you’re free to sound like a child if you want.
Edit: I’m guessing you assumed I posted on this thread, I didn’t….. so your initial “😂” was even less called for. I probably agree with most that was said, but again, you’re ranting about a cheep and overall great app, I’f you really don’t like it, you should pull out your wallet and get your cheep ass to pay the $9 a month for AI.

I think you would need to spend much more time with both to really see the differences and what each is better and worse at. That being said, Adobe has going for it that it is the standard. You have seen this yourself, your client wants .AI files because they are used everywhere and are the standard for vector work. This is not going to change anytime soon and if you are working or collaborating with other people you may find you need an Adobe subscription in order to properly work with them.
I think you’re being presumptious about how much time I’d require to compare, especially when I was referring primarily to the basic interface, but even more complex stuff like stroke pressure (which I use a ton) is more intuitive. As much as AI can do on the desktop, their mobile version needs some work. I had a fairly good look around and stand by my comparison. And if a client needs more than an svg, I’ll pay the $9 no F***’s given. Not entirely sure why you’re on here other than to simp for the “industry standard”. Sometimes creatives require tools that are more intuitive, that’s the point I was making, and as I said, stand by.

…. I needed it to provide a client with AI files, so thought I’d give it a go. Initially I was impressed with a few things, rulers being the main feature, but overall?? Affinity is substantially better! The interface is way more intuitive, there is more functionality, keyboard/mouse integration and, my assumption was that AI would have free transform, which it did not. I know that AD has been on the ipad for longer, but unless AI has a dramatic rethink of it’s interface, I will chose AD every time, and subscribe to AI only when completely necessary. So great job Serif! If you can integrate rulers, and have more options when it comes to the artboard background (it’s way too bright), include more keyboard shortcuts, and possibly work out free transform (I’m starting to doubt it’s possible for ipad though?), then you would have even more of a superior product. I’m even more happy I can more legitimately resent Adobe for their business model.

Now I’m transitioning towards publishing and I’m only doing work with/for my partner’s small and local printing shop here in Brașov, Romania
Well maybe give Upwork a go, it is a little saturated in terms of the classics… logo’s etc, but If you have a specific niche and can put up with the constant applications, there is work. And with AD/procreate/canva, I’m more or less set….. at least until 2.0 comes out 😉 All the best 👊🏻

The lack of communication is upsetting, but I don’t believe Designer is at bottom of Serif’s priorities; maybe bringing Publisher and StudioLink pushes everything else aside? About the conspiracy theories, I’d never bother to even joke about them. That’s where all the crap in this world takes form.
Kind regards to both of you
Props for staying calm in the face of quasi trolling. We shall see with 2.0 and I’ll check out that link. But in terms of Serif’s communication, maybe it’s company policy to keep Mum, but it sure as hell ain’t winning them any friends if this forum is anything to go by, at least amongst those of us who try our best not to deal with the Adobe devil while making a living with their software. Again, we shall see. Back at ya with the regards 👊🏻

Affinity makes a strong argument that people are tired of borrowing (expensive) software.
You are aware what thread you’re on right? 😂….. and how old it is? 🤣 I will happily be proved wrong if AD implements free transform. I use AD/AP on ipad primarily…. they don’t even have rulers! Great programs other than that, but those two features (or more importantly Affinity’s reluctance or inability to address their absence) will mean that both programs will never be legit competitors in their current iteration. What do you know that I don’t ref 2.0?

Was this addressed? Nope... of course not. Why would it be...
This thread is the only reason I log into this site now…. because I’m a sadist apparently…. and wouldn’t you know? They spent time and presumably money updating the forum since my last login, but apparently NONE on the subject of the longest running thread (of any import) on said forum. Oh, the bitter irony.
Someone once said that Serif were just controlled opposition for Adobe… I dismissed the “conspiracy theory” at the time, but time itself makes a convincing argument.
Canva will eat both of them, and I won’t shed one tear.

Thanks Callum 🙏🏻. I’ve said it before on here, will say it again now. AD is more intuitive, the functionality and UI way superior, and the price a bargain. Your app is invaluable to me as a professional. Cheers mate.
