  1. I hope i am posting this in the right forum: Will there need to be an update to Affinity Photo for editing raw files from the newly announce OM System OM 1 camera? Will the current raw editor work? If yes, will it need to optimized at all for the new sensor?
  2. I want to use Designer to create svg files to etch acrylic using a Cricut Maker. I found a tutorial using Inkscape (similar to Designer, but open source). Using Inkscape and an installed extension, you can create an outline of a graphic such as a Font or line drawing and fill it in with a bunch of tight lines, (hatched). The purpose of this technique is that it fills in the outline with lines that the etching machine follows to fill in the font or graphic. Then on the acrylic you can get some size to the etching. Does Designer have a similar feature? I am reluctant to spend time learning another graphics program for a fairly limited purpose, but could not find any approach to fill a font or graphic with anything other than raster colors (i think i am using that correctly).
  3. This is still relevant to me. I would image that many if not most users would be sending Publisher files to a printer. I am trying to take advantage of the flexible layout features of publisher to customize some photographic layouts. I have had good consistent results without a RIP from LR and PS. I have also stumbled into good output with Affinity Publisher and Photo through more trial and error. I haven't quite documented my flow enough. I still think the Affinity PUblisher implementation of the print driver interface was done as an afterthought, The implementation in Affinity Photo is essentially identical to Lightroom and straightforward. I have posted in the feature request and elsewhere on this forum on this matter. I haven't seen any response of any depth form anyone in Serif Tech Support. I am going to tackle this again and will share what i think are the right settings so other that encounter this (if anyone cares) will have something to work with.
  4. After additional research, assistance form other members (thank you Stokberg, R C-R and Walt.farrell), and more thinking, I have an approach to solve my problem that I would appreciate any Validation from the more experienced and knowledgeable members. To restate the problem, I have a small booklet of prints that is laid out in Publisher. I want to Print the booklet on an Epson R3000 using Inkpress Matte Double Sided Paper. Inkpress provides an ICC profile for the printer/paper combo. To print it, i need to enable the printer output to color manage based on the ICC profile and also select the correct media type for the paper. My steps that need validation or clarification: For this document, choose the Inkpress ICC profile in File/Document Setup/Color. This is based on the blog article linked by Stokberg. In File/Print select the paper size and feed - in this case Letter and Fine Art Front Feed (Retain Size) In File/Print/Color Matching choose Colorsync and Inkpress ICC Profile In File/Print/Printer Features select the following options (this is where it gets confusing) Page Setup: Fine Art Front Feed (Retain Size) This seems redundant to step 2 Paper Size to Letter (redundant setting) Print Settings Selection ID: Basic This setting seems irrelevant since all the options are provided in Printer Features Media Type: Epson Ultra Premium Matte (Recommended by paper manufacturer) Ink: Matte (this is fixed in the printer so an error message would probably result if it doesn't match what is active in the printer) Media Type: Same as above again redundant? but what if it is a mismatch I assume at this point, most of the options are disabled since they are related to colors management if managed by the printer, which should be off at this point. However there are a few areas of concern: Color Controls: Should this be Colorsync or off or does it not matter Color Matching: Should this be Colorsync or does it not matter Epson Profile: This looks like another redundant media setting, but i cannot decipher this based on the Epson printer documentation Media Type: Again, is this ignored or need to be set matching the other settings. I hope someone can give me confidence in this approach and identify anything I have wrong or have overlooked.
  5. Interesting. Thanks. That is a little less clunky. I would not have thought about the marquee mask. So the Photo Persona assumes the entire page, and what is on it, as the photo that will be adjusted.
  6. I think i should start a different thread since this one is tagged to Photo. I started down this path to get the colors right on a specific type of paper and printer. I realized that I have to soft proof it in Affinity Photo and export the adjusted TIFF or JPEG with the specific adjustments needed for the printer/paper combo. These adjusted photo files would be the ones I need to use in Affinity Publisher to get the colors right. A bit of a work around, but that could be intention of the designers. I can do the same in LR or PS and opt that the soft proofing is identical between the programs. This seems to solve the first part of my problem. The second part is Publisher specific, so i think a new thread or continuation of the old thread is in order.
  7. The printer drivers seem to be implemented differently in Affinity Photo and Affinity Publisher. This would be File/Print in both programs. I have two different Epson Printers, a Surecolor P600 and a Stylus R3000. I do not know if this is similar for other brands like Canon. The Print Box for both programs is shown below. Affinity Photo has three separate options in the third section. This is the same in Photoshop and Lightroom and I think it is the correct way to implement this: In Publisher these three options are combined into a Printer Feature Tab, which is more confusing: As an example, Media Type shows up Twice in this section of the Printer Feature Drop Down options: And once here: In addition, options don't get greyed out when they are over ridden by a previous selection - such turning color management off when you are using an ICC profile. The Photo Approach, it is much more organized and easier to use. Consistency across the three apps would be awesome. Thanks for considering.
  8. Thanks again for the response. I think i have just about muddled my way through this and I think i know what i am doing wrong and how to correct a few things. I will have to guess a bit on the printer settings, but think i know the combinations of features i need to select in the printer driver. Just as an FYI here are the two drop down boxes for Epson Printers. One from Affinity Photo (left box) and one From Affinity Publisher (right box). The choices are the same for a Surecolor P600 and a Stylus R3000. As you can see the Printer Settings, Page Layout Settings and Advanced Media Control seem to be rolled up into a single Printer Features options. I showed the long list of printer features in a different post: The confusing part of this approach by the development team is that there are four places to select the media. Options do not grey out as they do in the way Photo is set up. I would like to see them standardized. After all integration of the three apps is a strength of the Affinity suite. I will need to see if there is a feature request already in the other forum. If not, i will open one and see what happens. Affinity Photo on left, Affinity Publisher on Right
  9. Thank you for the reply. I am embedding TIFF files that were processed in Lightroom and Photoshop. The image is of sunflowers so the yellows are quite saturated. I know I have a challenge trying to get enough saturation on matte paper. On the soft proofing i had the adjustment layers below the soft proof. I must of misunderstood the one tutorial where i thought they were below. I will make the change and see how i do. I think part of my challenge is getting out of the Photoshop/Lightroom mindset and better understanding how this is designed. Also, thank you R C-R for taking the time with your reply. I actually understand color management reasonably well and have managed it in PS/LR without much problem. My struggle is with the Printer Features section of the print dialog in Publisher. Your insight on how the software deals with print drivers is helpful and i will take advantage of the link you provided to learn more. Unfortunately finding any real documentation from Epson on their drivers is difficult at best. I am still a bit puzzled on why Affinity Photo does not have the Printer Feature tab, while Publisher does. The Photo Version is identical to what is used in LR, so it is familiar. Thanks again for the assistant to both of you.
  10. I am trying to print an 8 page booklet of photos in Affinity Publisher. The colors lose some saturation when i print it out on Matte paper as i would expect. I am used to soft proofing in Lightroom, which has a lot of control for specific papers. Within Affinity, i believe soft proofing is only available in Affinity Photo, so i am trying to create a workflow to boost the saturation for the paper type, but ultimately print it out of Affinity Publisher. When I opened an image in AP, I applied the ICC profile for Inkpress Print Plus Matte two sided paper on the soft proof layer. The color shift was dramatic, it desaturated the colors. Relative and perceptual rendering did not change the color, but saturation rendering did and brought it much closer to the desired output. If i try other paper profiles, the color shift is more subtle and more like what i would expect using matte papers. A couple of question to help me figure out how to do this workflow: 1. The Affinity Photo tutorials do not follow soft proofing through to the printing module. Do you turn off the soft proof layer then use the other layers adjustments to print.? 2. Since the color shift is unusually dramatic on the one ICC profile, could it be a problem with how AP using this particular third party profile (although i have not seen this issue in Lightroom or inDesign for that matter)? 3. How do you set Saturation rendering to in the print workflow - this is a clear setting in Photoshop and Lightroom? I don't see the rendering option in the workflow. 4. I really need to print this out in Publisher, so how do you carry through the soft proofing adjustments back to Publisher to get the adjustments that would help recover some of the saturation lost on matte paper? I am quite frustrated by the lack of a clear tutorial or manual on managing a print workflow to a photo printer (such as a Surecolor P600 or Canon Pro 1000). This is further complicated but the different print interfaces between Publisher and Photo. Affinity Photo is much better, Publisher has a mysterious printer feature tab that doesn't make much sense (i have a related, unanswered post on this). Please point me in the right direction to anything that would educate me. I have looked through the Affinity Photo Tutorials, the Affinity Publisher Tutorials (both on the website, and the extra tutorials i have purchased). I also bought the Affinity Photo Workbook. I am either a slow learner or the information is not there.
  11. Thank you. The article does not cover much on home printer color management. I did learn that I can soft proof, which I did not know prior to reading the link. I am printing a small booklet on a home printer. My difficulty is that the printer dialog boxes in publisher are different that affinity photo. The latter uses a dialog box that i am familiar with and is the same as in Lightroom. In publisher the printer feature tab, show a long list of options that i cannot quite correlate to the dialog in AP. Some of the options seem straight forward, and i assume other are not used if certain options are selected. For example, if i select color management off then the epson color control options are irrelevant. But i don't know if i should turn color management off (which is true in lightroom) or pick Colorsync (which is selected on a different drop down box as well). I am used to the concept of turning off color management, use the paper ICC profile, and select a media type once. I attached screen shots of the print feature drop down (five parts since it scrolls for a while). As far as i know, it is not in any tutorial, blog, or in the help files. Since there is no manual, i am at a loss on how to understand this better to have confidence in my output. I have filled a waste can with my attempts so far, some have been successful, some a bust. Publisher is ideal for my needs since this is a hobby (a serious one, but a hobby nonetheless). I just think the information on the output side of the software could be a little bit more clear. Thank you in advance for any further assistance.
  12. Maybe to simplify my question: How do you do color management for printing on a home printer using ICC proviles? What dialog boxes need to be set?
  13. I am a bit confused by the Printer Features section of the Print dialog box. This may be specific to the Epson print driver for the R3000. I want to properly color manage the print and use the ICC profile. I noticed that the Media Type option is in three different places. I would like to understand which options need to be selected for the media type. I have set it in all three places and it seems to work fine, but I would like to know if this is necessary? Thanks for any insight.
