    You’re welcome, hp …  :)

Here’s another idea. Perhaps you should start with a mesh-like structure (to introduce some of these typical irregularities to be found in puzzle pieces) and apply the technique outlined in post #5. Please have a look at the video below. I am well aware that this method does not always result in beautiful curves, but you might give it a try … sorry for showing all the repetitive tasks in the video. (And perhaps some of the triangles should be flipped …)

    Cheers, Alex  :)

Alex, much appreciated.  I hadn't played with the Outline.  The contour will come in handy sometimes.

P.S. I am not sure if you have to create your puzzle using the Pen Tool … why not adapt a method like the one outlined in the following video I made for you? This method uses Boolean operations and Matt’s wonderful Corner Tool …  :)

Did you try the filter add noise? That seems to have more functionality.

    Hey guys,

you can already (sort of) do this … create a path, go to Layer EFX panel, choose “Outline”, alignment “Center”, fill style “Contour”, and style the gradient … is that what you wanted to achieve?

    Cheers,
    Alex  :)

    P.S. I haven’t figured out a way to create non-symmetric gradients that way … I guess it’s not possible …

Thanks for all the feedback. I created the thread so you could all help drive the iteration of the new icons. We have now completed what we will have for our next App Store release so I'm going to close this thread.

We plan on iterating our icons in the coming years so will probably need your help again. Keep hold of all those opinions for the next round.

    Thanks again,
    TonyB.

You can always download a "national park" version to a partition or external drive and see what you think.  I went to 10.10.4 today and all is well.

Thank you for the mention Peter!

What do you mean when you talk about "shadows blending"?
If you're talking about "value painting" the best set to approach this technique is probably Gouaches.
With these tools strokes overlap gradually blending with an "average" colour mode.

This is an illustration I'm working on using this set.

I know it's a small request, but it'd be really useful (and liven up my desktop) if the .afphoto and .afdesign documents had a generic icon. I (like a lot of other designers I know) have the icon preview turned off so I can quickly see what the document type is. The standard white one is rather dull, considering how great everything else is!

    Cheers  :)

    Hi vonBusing :)

Thanks for those files - very interesting to see! I definitely agree we could and should be doing better with the PDF export of that document - but the reason it has increased dramatically in size from the output of the App Store 1.2.1 version is simply that the PDF created by the 1.2.1 version for this document was just one large image! The output created from the current version is separate items, rasterised where necessary, so it ends up inflating the file size as a result. We're in the middle of completely replacing the PDF export of the application to use our own exporter (rather than making use of Apple's built-in PDF support) so we will have much greater control of our export soon - so I would hope to see this file improve dramatically in the future :)

    Thanks again,
    Matt

I think displacement filter would be the keywoard.
(At least as I remember it was a filter - maybe it's not) but I'm pretty shure that I also found this in AP.
