A_B_C reacted to MattP in Affinity APP's doesn't work with El Capitan
Yeah, I think the work the team at Apple have done with Metal is just awesome :) The best bit of all (that most people don't seem to understand) is that everything that uses Metal gets faster - and they've made OpenGL, CoreGraphics and lots of their other core technology use Metal - so although we use OpenGL (not Metal directly) the performance increase is noticeable! :) We're not in the slightest frame-rate limited on the GPU in El Capitan - which is nice! :)

Nice design … :)
Maybe you should readjust the stroke widths a bit … follow the line of the "S" and you will immediately see … ;)

A_B_C reacted to TJNickerson in Creating Flat Icons (w/ Long Shadows)
After seeing quite a bit of demand for long shadows in Affinity Designer, I took it upon myself to throw together a basic tutorial to get you guys started with flat icon design in Affinity. My example isn't perfect, but it should be enough to get you going. You can view the tutorial here. Let me know what you guys think!

This is my tribute to Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas; who didn't panic when a Maccy D bag, got itself caught on Froomey's quick release skewer. On the final stage in Paris.
All this happening on those famous cobbles; in front of the World's press and TV cameras.

Thank you, both!
I had to do a little working with what you mentioned. I still don't know exactly what I did wrong, but I see now that my current puzzle-piece has been constructed in a wrong way. It might work on some cases, but in my case the paths are combined in a wrong order and I'd need to separate them first and combine them somehow different, what would also crash my puzzle-piece a little bit.
Rather that combining paths it is more safe to combine areas to get a clear area. Your videos, Alex were very helpful for me, to see how I could work faster with AD.

A_B_C reacted to aniavo in Affinity Developer??
Just purchased Affinity Photo, will be getting Designer in a week or two and will be looking out for Publisher in 2016. The only application that would be missing for my needs (selfish I know) would be a web developer application. I used Dreamweaver because well that is what I got used to using the work flow and the integration with other Adobe programs worked for me.
I know all focus is on Publisher and then the iOS apps. I am wondering if there are any plans for a web developing application to coincide with the other great applications you guys are producing making Affinity to go to company for all web/graphic designer needs?

I know where I went wrong...no snapping. This is where you select the two edges, snap to, then join curves. This is better explained here...

A_B_C got a reaction from peter in How to make 2 different paths become one path?
Hi Paul009,
that depends … but a standard method might be this one:
Activate both paths using the Node Tool (hold Shift and click the paths) Choose Snap to Selected Curves in the context toolbar Drag and snap the endpoint of the first path onto the desired endpoint of the second one Select both points using the Node Tool marquee Choose Join Curves from the context toolbar Repeat for the other endpoints Finally add a fill from the colour panel Have a look at this post too:

Hope that helps, Alex :)

A_B_C reacted to rui_mac in Affinity Designer 1.3.2 Issues
As for the guides not being able to be pulled, sometimes, it has to do with the fact that it is only possible to pull guides out of the rulers when the Move Tool is selected.
That is VERY limiting. We should be able to pull guides with ANY tool selected.

WoW!!!! many ideas...
I am going to study the three of them..though I have taken a view to the Alex ones and for me, they need a bit more of study.
Just need time to investigate how to do it and learn from your images and clips. Then, in case I won´t manage to do it, I will send post a sort of trial shape in course, on order to see how you could I do it with it.
Thanks a lot MBd...(I am waiting for the Ipad Affinity too...intensly!!)
Thank you so, Alex..your movs. have been so great to see and learn from..
Thanks again, Gear maker. I will study your point of view!!
Kind greetings from Bilbao, Spain,
Rosa

A_B_C reacted to Gear maker in Rotating tool. Is there a way to anchor it? Am I missing something?
Interesting methods Alex.
What I have found to be the easiest workaround to rotate a shape around an arbitrary point is to draw a circle holding down the shift and cmd keys so the center of the circle is at the point I want to rotate the primary shape(s) around. Make the circle large enough that it totally covers the primary shape(s).
Then select the primary shape(s) and the circle.
Using the transform panel with the center selected any angle can be specified. Alternatively any of the rotate handles around the bounding box can also be used.
If you want the circle center to remain visible the Donut shape with a small hole radius is handy instead of a circle.

A_B_C got a reaction from Paekke in How to or tips on creating concentric circles of shapes?
Hey guys,
I tried the dashed line technique as well, but I could not overcome the problems. Better dashed line support was already requested here:
https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/6973-dashed-line-update-post-12/
But here’s another idea. Go for the Text on a Path option:
Create a circle. Use the Artistic Text Tool to put text on the circle. Select a font and type <Bullet Glyph> <Space> …, until you have the desired number of circles on your path. Then select Justified All, adjust the red wedges and the baseline offset. I used the bullet glyph of Arial in my example file, but be aware, that these glyphs are usually not perfect circles. For perfect results you may have to create a custom font of your own. Copy the circle, scale it and remove unwanted glyphs. Repeat and adjust. When you’re done, you can convert your text to curves. Not the perfect method, but the only one I can think of … :)
Cheers,
Alex

A_B_C got a reaction from alsina in 1. - How do I make Affinity Media Browser recognize an Aperture Library located elsewhere but in the "blessed" Pictures folder?
Hi Cesar, have you seen these threads? Maybe there are some answers to your questions … or at least you will see that you’re not alone … :(

I am sorry, but there seem to be still some problems with the Media Browser. Have you tried to put an Alias of your external library into the Pictures folder? Does that make any difference?

A_B_C reacted to Dave Harris in Text on a Path anomaly
I think the effect you want can be got with path text by putting it on a 12-sided polygon. (Path text isn't just for circles!) To position the later numbers you'd need to use tabstops - centre-aligned tabstops in the middle of the polygon sides. You'd probably need to do some trigonometry to work out what angle to rotate the polygon to, and what the length of its sides were. A_B_C's method may be easier.

A_B_C reacted to jackamus in Ellipses
This is an issue I touched on a long time ago.
As a technical illustrator I use ellipses almost all the time it the nature of the discipline. When deciding on what proportion of ellipse to start with in AD one simply draws an ellipse that looks OK. It is very unlikely that the illustrator will enter a height and width. The problem is that there is no way to repeat that ellipse if you have not made a note of its minor and or major axis. If there was another box in the Transform tab that told you what degree the ellipse was then it would be easy to remember and repeat.
By degree I mean the angle that a circle makes with the horizontal plane. e.g. a circle viewed on its edge ( a straight line) would be 0deg and when viewed full face (a circle) would be 90deg, a circle tilted 45deg would a 45deg ellipse and so on.. As you increase either the height or width the 'new' degree box would show its angle.
Deciding to start with say a 35deg ellipse is much easier than trying to remember a width and height for a given proportion. The width and height boxes come into their own in specifying either major or minor axis.
I have attached a drawing which I have submitted before and think it won't do any harm to resurrect it again.
I would suggest that the degree of an ellipse would simply be calculated by AD using the tangent of the minor axis divided by the major axis or the smaller size divided by the larger size size as height and width boxes would be interchangeable.
Since more people are now using AD than when I last mentioned this suggestion I would be most interested in how many 'Likes' it gets.

A_B_C got a reaction from anon1 in Text on a Path anomaly
Hi Kenny,
and welcome here :) …
No, what you describe is by design. The vertical axes of the single letters are pointing towards the center of the circle you are using. To achieve what you want, you won’t be able to use the text on a path feature. As I believe, you will have to do it another way … here’s a possible solution (see my screen cast):
Create a single text frame with the Frame Text Tool at 12 o’clock and center your text inside the frame Duplicate this frame to 6 o’clock and rotate it by 180 degrees Group both items Duplicate them by hitting Cmd + J Set the center of rotation on the Transform Panel to the center of the created group and choose 330 degrees rotation Hit Cmd + J ("Power Duplicate") as long as you have the 12 text frames Hope that helps …
Cheers, Alex
