I understand that there are a lot of ways to create the result of using the shape builder tool, but I think the point people are trying to make is that the tool is used during the creative phase. To be able to manipulate curves efficiently while designing and experimenting is critical in logo design for example.  Not having it makes the process clunky.   Just my two cents.

The ShapeBuilder tool is the last step affinity designer needs to take to become an independent software, without the need to use Adobe’s Illustrator.
Afinnity Designer, if you want to take over Adobe’s dominance in your sector, you need to add the Shape Builder as soon as possible

@Sean P In all fairness boolean operations have never really worked correctly/have been extremely buggy across the Affinity apps and these issues have been raised time and time again and are usually greeted with 'we're aware of the issue, it's with development to be fixed', yet literally several years later we still have exactly the same issues...
I don't think I would be alone in questioning why these particular bugs have still yet to be fixed/are taking so long to be fixed? It would be great to get your perspective on this since the particular issues relating to boolean operations seems to be something that get very little/zero attention yet are raised time and again in the forums.
I love Affinity apps but the lack of any progress on this particular issue seems strange after so long...

Another aspect to this is that there have been numerous requests for a Shape Builder Tool, but it’s quite clear that the basic Boolean operations need to work reliably before such a tool would be worthwhile.

Absolutely love what Affinity is doing!!! Illustrator is still a joke really although I use it almost everyday. I literally think I wouldn't NEED to open it at all if Affinity had the shape builder tool. BY FAR the best tool added to Illustrator in years!!! PLEASE ADD this tool! I'm sure you guys will dial it up and make it even better than adobe.
A tracing tool would be nice as well.

I too think it would be an amazing addition to Designer to have a shape builder tool. I really feel like Affinity Designer is lagging behind when it comes to the pen/shape tools. Software like Illustrator and even Figma is a head when it comes to things like even being able to copy and paste nodes.
I would say, I've been using Designer more now my Adobe has ran out and I'm surprised by how many fundamental features it is actually lacking.

    Please Serif,
Listen to the people that support your product.
Please add the shape builder tool to Affinity Designer. Nothing gives me pleasure than working on the project in the software. It is that it becomes tedious trying to create shapes when the shape builder tool can save so much time. I know you want to make it simpler for all of us, but why not create a button where everyone have access to it in the context panel and call it a day.
    Thank you.

The shape builder tool is a significant time saver and quality of life feature. I have used Adobe Illustrator since the 1990s and am used to both the old school booleans and the new shape builder tool method. The shape builder tool makes the process far more intuitive and enjoyable.

    DaveRX,
Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums
This is a beta build of a minor patch. So the current release 1.8.3.2 is becoming 1.8.4.n . As such it's purpose is essentially to fix issues that effect 1.8.3
New features like Shape Builder are unlikely to appear except in a major update , say releases like 1.9.0, or 1.10.0 or 2.0.0 That is not a strict rule but it is a fairly good indication that you should not expect to see new features in this minor patch.
Matt and the other software developers have been doing parallel development of the next release and 1.9 should include some new features, though we are not in a position to say what those are yet.
This thread is not the right place for this conversation, though as a new member I chose to reply here to your first post rather than split it off. To other readers, feel free to quote me but do it in other threads not here

    Hey guys,

There is actually only one thing missing for me in AD. But thats a big one, especially as it speed up my process immensly since it was introduced in AI. I'm talking about the notorious Shape builder tool. Of course you could make something else, that increases the speed of boolean operations. :-) (idk, shortcuts maybe?)

    Thank you in advance,
    Felix

If one has to name one tool which give incredible power to a user, most of the user will say its Shape Builder Tool.
It not only can reduce the time consumption in a long project but also give the freedom of creativity to a user.
One can easily test out the prototype without going too sophisticated on a idea.
    Thank you.

To make Designer a real contender to Adobe Illustrator for logo designers, it desperately needs an implementation of Illustrator’s shape builder tool.

We really need a shape builder tool.
And if you are going to say that you can achieve the same results with geometry operations , then I should say that you can achieve the same results with paint.
It is not about achieving , it about how you achieve .

Again, from my side. If you are a professional and need to work out a lot of ideas in a quick manner, the shape builder tool is essential. It's the one tool, I - and MANY of my friends can't miss and that's why I cannot recommend this as an 100% alternative to illustrator.

Sure, technicially spoken it does kind of the same thing as the boolean tools, but if you have plenty of shapes to combine, you may have to do a lot of work to make it happen. For me personally, I've purchased all products by Affinity, but can'T use them to my speed.

With version 1.8 I'm very happy with a lot of newly added features, but I hope for 1.9, the shape builder will be added. People desperately search for alternatives to the Adobe cosmos, but I believe, it still takes quite a bit of time.

    Hey Affinity,
I love using your software and with each update it's getting better and better. Really looking forward to Publisher dropping shortly as well which will have no doubt focused on all of your attention.
I use Designer predominately and there are two tools that I know a lot of people would benefit from. I was wondering if they might be in future plans and if there is any time scale?
    1) Shape Builder - i know designer already features similar tools but it would be awesome to have a dedicated tool similar to illustrator which would really help with productivity and accuracy. This thread dates back to 2015 so fingers crossed aha!
    2) Expand Strokes to Shapes -  This would be so useful in so many different ways.
    Many thanks,
    Cailum

DaveRx reacted to Cuando in Disappointed. No Multiple text columns in the next future?
I love AD, but I can't believe that Affinity Designer has not yet implemented Multiple columns of text yet in its beta 1.8. It is a basic implementation for a "designer"
Will we have to wait for version 2.0 to be able to work professionally with AD or will it continue to be a complementary tool for Adobe software?
Don't tell me that Publisher has this ability that I already know the story.
