  1. Hi,

Yet another issue I was expecting to be fixed by V2 after paying for the entire suite, I'm quite let down that I have to report something so elemental. Although this is MacOS specific, the issue is present is all three desktop apps.

When moving panels outside the main one by dragging out tabs, the panels don't snap to the edges or interact with rest of the interface whatsoever (like they do in Adobe software, for instance). When finally placed by hand, they just awkwardly float over the window without following along if the window is dragged or resized. Here's a video showing what happens:

On top of that, when perfoming certain actions that involve additional windows to show, these are shown behind (?!) these panels, making it impossible to see the content and even click buttons. Here's an example of the mess that happens when trying to place images with the Place Image tool if, God forbid, you tool box or panels aren't docked:

  3. Hi,

Right now the tool box can only be docked to the left side margin by default. I was hoping the V2 upgrade would've included this, but I'll request it nonetheless: it would be nice to be able to dock the tool box to either side of the screen, specially for those who carry out most their workflow on the right side. Having to look for tools on the opposite end of a large screen is awfully ineffective.

PS. I am aware the tools can be detached and placed freely around the screen, however I rezise my windows constantly and the tool box unfortunately stays at the same spot and always has to be dragged along.

  4. Hi,

This has been a frustrating issue since V1 that I hoped would be fixed by V2. Unfortunately it still hasn't. When trying to customize the toolbar what happens most of the times is the entire window gets dragged, making it almost impossible to rearrange elements and spaces.

For what it's worth, this issue is present in all three apps of the suite and in both MacBooks I've tested.

  7. Hi,

This has been an ongoing issue I've had for months that still hasn't been fixed, so I thought I'd post about it. Each time I use the Vector Brush tool with my pressure sensitive stylus (from Wacom), I get odd inconsistent strokes with spacing that shouldn't be there. The Controller is set to pressure and the issue remains even if I use the Stabiliser. This doesn't happen in other software, so the pen doesn't seem to be the problem.

In addition to this, when multiple strokes are drawn or when doing it a consistent speed, Designer stops responding and crashes.

Just to point something out—colour decontamination is actually applied to the previews (Overlay, Black/White and Transparent) and carries across when you output as a New layer or New layer with mask. You should always use one of these two options for cutouts/foreground extraction. Outputting to a selection or mask will forego colour decontamination because they don't alter the pixel content.

Thanks for the info James, I wasn't aware of that hidden trick!

Regarding my source image, I only have the provided 3456×5184 .jpg file as it was part of an assignment where I had to clip the kid into a different background. So the issue for Affinity might as well be compression as you point out. You reckon this would not happen with a higher quality .RAW file for instance?

  9. Hey there,

I've been having some issues with the "Refine Edges" tool when it comes to selections. After carefully selecting my subject in the picture, I intended to refine my selection when I noticed that as soon as I clicked on the "Refine..." button, the edges of my selection became fuzzy and inaccurate right away, making my overall selection much worse. This happened without even altering the settings or painting with the brush. After spending plenty of time trying to refine the selection with the help of the "foreground" and "background" brushes the result was not much improved, so I had to resort to Photoshop in order to get the job done.

Here you can clearly see the what happens:

Now I'm aware of the low contrast in some of the edges which make the task more complicated, something moderators keep mentioning in similar posts forgetting that's often the case in real-life scenarios. However when I managed to get a nearly perfect selection on Photoshop, I realised that was just an excuse (not to mention the improvement "Decontaminate colors" makes, a feature currently lacking in Affinity Photo).

You can find the original image and my results in Photoshop as a comparison below, as well as the .afphoto file with the original selection saved as a Spare Channel, in case you want to give it a try. I've seen several posts regarding this issue, but since no actual solutions where provided and the topics were just forgotten (as you can see here, here and here), I decided to post about it myself before having to unfortunately switch back to Photoshop for good.
