Thanks for the replies. I'm on a Mac, so is my client. The online "Compare PDFs" tool is interesting. Maybe my client will find it useful, but it gets confused with line-ending hyphens, so the results are muddied by many erroneous differences.
I know I could do this in Adobe Acrobat, but I hate hate hate the subscription model, and I've used my free trial of Acrobat. I might use a different computer to get another trial for this one project.

My camera, a Lumix GX-85, has a nifty feature called "post focus". Basically, it uses the 4K movie mode to make a focus stack; each frame in the little movie clip has a slightly different focal plane. It's possible to do the processing in-camera, but I much prefer doing it in my studio on the big screen with a keyboard and mouse. So, I extract the frames in an app called SnapMotion, and then create the focus merge in AF Photo. Generally, this process works great. I can get wonderful sharpness and depth of field in macro work handheld or with improvised support. BUT, sometimes, there is a little too much motion in the scene. Perhaps the flower is swaying in the breeze, perhaps bugs are crawling around, perhaps my handholding isn't steady enough. The result is ghosting which manifests itself as an odd halo effect or choppy pieces of insect.
When I do HDR exposure merges in Lightroom, there is a setting for "deghost amount" which helps reduce/prevent that problem. I don't see any equivalent setting in AF Photo for focus merges.
Does anybody have suggestions as to how I can deal with this problem? Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing? When it's just a little halo around the petals, it's a fairly easy cleanup. But sometimes the images are something of a mess.
I've attached an image which shows the problem. There's both the fuzzy halo thing around the petals and some ants that are chopped up.

A couple of problems with the whole "facing pages" thing. The original document is not set up with facing pages. Its destination is Kindle. The only reason page numbers and other master page elements are in this version is to help us find locations for edits. Second, I don't see any way to make a "Facing Pages IDML". Perhaps that feature was added in later versions of ID. I'm running ye olde CS4. When I export a document as an idml file, I do not get any options. The Youtube video I saw which introduced this new feature said that idml files are created as part of the package process, but when I package projects on this version, it doesn't make an idml file at all.

I've been using Publisher 1.8 quite a bit on my iMac. I have not had crashing problems. The performance is good. I have had a different problem with importing InDesign files.

I read with great joy about the new update to Publisher being able to open and edit InDesign files... well .idml files, anyway. I've got an old version of InDesign running on my old laptop and a bunch of ID projects which I need to be able to covert to Publisher. So, for several projects, I've opened the old ID file on the laptop, exported as an .idml file, taken the new file to my new computer, and opened i in Publisher. Sometimes this works without a hitch, even for some complicated projects. But other times, the content slides over so it's half off the page. For single-page projects, that's no bigee. But it just happened on a 330 page novel I need to edit. The mater page stuff has all slid to the right, and the body text has slid to the left.
Does anybody have an idea how I should deal with this?

The last lingering problem with my de-Adobification project is replacing Lightroom. I've been trying Exposure X5 from Alien Skin. There are quite a few things I like about it but it doesn't do compositing for HDR or panoramas. I thought that would be OK, since AF Photo does these things. But, when I export a stackable RAW file series from EX5 to AF Photo, the RAW images just open in the develop persona. Then I have to develop them, save them, close them, and then do a new HDR merge. There's got to be a better way. I suppose I could use Ex5 to find the exact location and filenames of the RAW files I want to merge and just switch to AF Photo, but that's awfully clunky convoluted workflow, too. Is there a shortcut or two I haven't found/learned yet? Is there some way to send files straight from the develop persona to HDR merge without developing, saving, and closing them? Plus, are there any indexing apps which can handle .afphoto files?

I, too, am seeking a Lightroom replacement as I cut the cord to Adobe. For my projects, the features I need most seem relatively simple: indexing. So far at least, I'm impressed with the RAW and compositing features in AF Photo. It's not hard to imagine a LR replacement working in the Affinity-scape. The AF-LR would sync with AF Photo by enabling me to find and choose specific images based on keywords, etc. and pass them to Photo for processing. In AF Pub, my photo library would appear in the Assets Panel, sorted by my choice of keyword, date, or location on my HD. As I research the currently available LR replacements, I'm saddened, overwhelmed, and unimpressed. Some lack basic indexing features. Some are parts of other software suites and I'm not sure how well they'd work in AF-land. Most have redundant features already in AF Photo or their most marketed features make me say "why would I want to do that?"

Converting this catalog to AF Publisher is turning into a big project.

How do I do a find & replace which is limited to a selection?
Specifically, I'm working on a catalog which used to be an InDesign file. One of the categories of formatting which gets lost in the translation is text wraps. All of the line breaks in the old text wrap become hard carriage returns. So, if I move the image, it leaves a hole. If I re-size the image or the column, everything goes wonky-bonkles. So, I want to select a chunk of text and replace the hard carriage returns with spaces. But I absolutely do not want to go through every hard carriage return in the document.

Dang, that's super-duper simple. I don't even have to command-v the image into the new file. I'm just so used to the command-n shortcut for a new file I didn't even think to look elsewhere for the option elsewhere. Thanks.

I'm just starting making the switch from Photoshop to AF Photo. I frequently need to edit screen grabs of odd sizes. The screen grab function on my Mac allows me to grab a portion of the screen and send the image to the pasteboard. In Photoshop, when I create a new document when there's an image on the pasteboard, it gives me the option to make the new document the size of the pasteboard image. So, I just creat a new doc the right size, and click command-v. I cannot find this option in AF Photo. Does it exist and I'm just not looking in the right place?

I'm using Publisher 1.7.3
I tried a version of the tif file without text. Same problem.
I deleted the eps file. Same problem.
I changed the text in Publisher from Clarendon to Caslon. The problem disappeared.
So, apparently there's something wrong with this particular version/copy of Clarendon.

I've developed a hypothesis. Unfortunately, I can't test it until I get back to my office computer in the morning. The tif file uses an Adobe font which subscribers can activate online and use in their projects. Publisher wasn't recognizing the font, but Photoshop was, so I did a little text wrap in Photoshop and placed the tif in Publisher. But I didn't rasterize the font, so Publisher is probably having problems embedding it in the pdf, but the preview version is good enough to make a jpeg. I'll try rasterizing the font in the tif tomorrow.

I'm slowly getting the hang of Publisher, but I just ran into an odd problem. One particular project simply will not export as a pdf. I've exported other Publisher projects as pdfs just fine, but this one just throws up an error "an error occurred while exporting..." FWIW, the export dialog box never calculates a file size, either. This project is very simple. It's one page. It has text, a placed tif file, and a placed eps file. I can export it as a png or a jpg, but not as a pdf. Does anybody have any ideas how to fix this?

Another voice of encouragement for the Affinity folks to develop a Lightroom replacement here. It does seem like the one major missing piece of the puzzle for many folks' workflow. I've got an overlapping thread, "indexing photo libraries", on this forum. So far, the best option for photo indexing I've found is a little open source app called DigiKam. The indexing features are excellent, and I've been finding it easy to use. The raw processing and photo merging are primitive, however, and some folks are having trouble installing it or running it. Now, if/when Affinity releases their version with tight integration with the three existing apps, life will be good.

It's interesting to see the troubles others are having with DigiKam. I'm running Mojave, and installation was simple. The only glitch was that the developer isn't registered with Apple, so I had to control-click on the installer to get it to install. I haven't had a lot of time to work with it yet, but I've been able to figure out how to do stuff easily so far. The learning curve still points up, but I'm confident I'll be able to build a smooth, high quality, Adobe-free work flow with the three Affinity apps plus DigiKam.

I was learning how to do tagging in DigiKam. I was assuming I was going to have to start all over with a new keyword set and re-do everything. But, magically, DigiKam found my Lightroom keywords and I'm in business. Unlike Lightroom, Digikam can actually find the photos. Hooray! Now, to set Affinity Photo as my editor, and I'm ready to rock.

Cool. Thanks everybody. It looks like DigiKam is going to fill my needs. I've been trying Corel Aftershot Pro, but I haven't been getting along with it well. All I really need is the indexing capabilities so I can organize and find the shots I want and send them to the editor. The full-featured DAMs are ludicrous overkill; I'm not a corporation; I don't need the copyright protection, etc. that those offer.

Yes, I was pretty sure that this arrow wasn't in Affinity's quiver yet. It's an obvious enough project that it's likely that they're working on it. But, in the immediate term, I'd still like suggestions for a DAM that works well with Photo. I've done quite a bit of research, and haven't found anything that looks promising. ACDSee has nice indexing features, but it's part of a big package that would be redundant and have a steep learning curve. There are a few cheapie DAMs which look woefully inadequate for a large library. There are a couple of frightfully expensive ones which look like overkill. What are other photographers using with Photo?

Is it a real hyphen, or one inserted by the software when a word breaks? Is this aberrant paragraph picking up formatting from another program? Are you typing it, or copying and pasting?
