When RAW files open the image is dark and the histogram crunched towards the middle. The image in Navigator is OK, so I have to use this to make edits. Why are the two views different and how can I fix the fault?

Using Nikon D7100 and Fuji x100f. Editing on PC. Have had no issues after using for more than 1 year. Besides RAW problem as described the Nik plug ins also disappeared and had to be reloaded. Have cleared lots of computer memory but fault still exists....

Suddenly the RAW image is very dark- the histogram is crunched to the centre area. When modified to look correct and then developed the appearance is far too bright and has to be restored using a curve adjustment. The develop assistant settings have not been changed. Advice please.
