2989 reacted to Vegard in How to export as vector image?
So I am trying to create images that I can use as assets, not as a layer asset but as a vector image asset. But I am unable to do this. If I in Designer export to say svg or eps I get them as embeded document, and then I cannot save it as an asset. I have tried searching for this and seen many videos, but it seems I am not sure what the correct search is for this problem.
I have tried creating all objects so they all become "curves" but that does not seem to help. And I do not want to raster it as that does not make it vector.
What is the correct way of saving this as an object/image that I can use as an asset later?

2989 reacted to mayahan in AD Question: Pattern Swatch?
This might be a silly question but,
I noticed there's no such thing as 'Pattern Swatch' in Affinity Designer.
I see that you can only save 'color' or 'gradient' swatches.
Or am I wrong?
I know that you can use bitmap as fill, but when I try to use a (halftone) pattern that I created, the filled image is blurry, not razor sharp.
I'm still learning to use 'Affinity Designer' and so far I love it.
I hope there's a way to go about creating a pattern swatch.
Thanks!

It requires the Xquartz X11 enviroment which don't find in my apps installed..
I really wished it was part of designer .... That would be a killer for illustrator!!

2989 reacted to Jhonatan S in Update Embedded Document
+1 I have to agree, an update Button, or a Auto-update for embedded files on affinity / Designer and Photo would be really great workflow,
I'm dealing with social media pages where I need to use different Templates, ex: same images and logos to export for web sites / instagram / facebook,
but the main situation is, when I need to replace some images from the embed documents template to change in all documents like syncronized
I'm using symbols at this point but of course a way to update the embed document would be very awesome. if is not possible to sync, A button just to update would be helpful
hey @MattP see if this is possible for the next updates

2989 reacted to Busenitz in Request - Contour / offset
I’m on a Mac so DP isn’t an option. However, most every other vector app (even free ones) has contour/offset. Which puzzles me even more- if this is “low hanging fruit” as it was described early on, why isn’t it even close after 4 years?

2989 reacted to gypsiwoman in Request - Contour / offset
For those of you who own both Affinity Designer and Serif DrawPlus, the workaround I have been using is to create my image in Designer and export it as an SVG. import it into DP to create a contour around it, export the contour as an SVG file, open it in Designer, then copy the image and paste it into my work space. A bit cumbersome to say the least but it affords me an option not found in Designer.
Has anyone else found a viable workaround? Inquiring minds want to know.

This would be less disappointing if we hadn't been told from the get-go that this is an easy feature to add, and if it wasn't a common feature among even the free graphic apps. I know Affinity has added a lot of bells and whistles to the app, but I really really need the basics!!!
All said, AD is still the best Mac (non-Adobe subscription) software you can buy. But I'm referring it with much less enthusiasm than I did four years ago.

2989 reacted to gypsiwoman in Request - Contour / offset
At the risk of being redundant, I'm adding my +1 on this subject. I use the contour feature extensively. Since Designer doesn't have this feature, I find myself going back to DrawPlus frequently. This wouldn't be such an issue if I could create my contour in DP and then import the file and finish the work in Designer but the files are incompatible. Frankly, I think the incompatibility issue is a major faux pas particularly given that AD was marketed first to DP users. Going forward, this means I will always have to have two graphics programs available on my computer in order to access and edit work created in the legacy program.
This thread was started four years ago and still no progress on the contour feature? Disappointing to say the least.

2989 reacted to EmmaH in Measuring question
I'm a novice on drawing programs and using this to draft clothing patterns. I'm really happy with it generally having only installed it a week or so ago but I'm having problems with one aspect. When using the pen tool particularly straight line tool to automatically end lines it would be really handy to be able to know the distance to the next point. Sometimes i need to create a line of a set length to intersect another line and this is hard if its at a non vertical or horizontal. I like the CTRL hover guide but could it work on lines in any direction from the last point please?

Please tell me you guys are almost there for a live paint tool? It's been 5 years since you've asked and said you've been working on it. This is a very critical component for why I used Illustrator.

2989 reacted to ra.skill in Missing Features for Fashion & Textiles
I have been using Illustrator professionally for the past 20 years and also educationally for the past 10, with a focus on Fashion Design and Technical Drawing. But much like everyone else on this forum I am utterly fed up with Adobe's systems and methods in recent years.
I am 100% ready to jump ship and never look back but there's just a couple of features that are stopping me....
1. Pattern Brushes
The Ability to turn any vector shape into a repeating pattern brush.
A feature commonly used to create stitching brushes in fashion design.
2. Brush Profiles
The ability to add a shape profile to a brush.
3. Image Tracing
The Ability to automatically trace a raster image and create a vector version.
4. Pattern Creation
The Ability to create a repeating pattern or print that can be saved as a swatch and used as a fill.
Add these 3 features in the next edition and I'll jump the Adobe ship bringing my 120 students with me 🙂

2989 reacted to Al Grasso in Can the old assets of PagePlus X8 or X9 be imported into the Affinity Suite?
I need to use some of the assets from PagePlus X8/X9 into Affinity Publisher or Designer. Can this be done and if so in which vector format can it be done?
I tried exporting in svg format and the Serif Metafile Format but I was unable to load them into Affinity.
Obviously I can export them in pixel format but I prefer to export in vector format.

2989 reacted to abarkalo in Embedding of placed Images
This would be very useful to me as well. The ability to pick any layer and right click and then select "convert to embedded document" would be fantastic. If I place an individual image I am only given the option to "replace image." If I do want to make an embedded document out of the image then I have to create a new Photo, Designer or Photoshop document and save in their native formats. This is a tedious extra step and wonder why it's necessary. Then I can place these file and it will show up an as embedded object. The usefulness of this is to be able to apply effects such as shearing, or any type of size transformation but when I "edit document" I see the document without these transformations. This is great for mockups.

2989 reacted to D3moN in Brushes for technical drawings (fashion design)
Hey Guys,
I'm a fashion design student and I switched from Adobe Illustrator to Affinity Desginer.
I don't want to use AD just for drawings but for technical drawings too.
My problem: in Illustrator I had brushes for zippers and stitches. Everytime I drew a straight line I could change the brush into a zipper or a stitch but for AD there is nothing like this pre made brushes available (or haven't found it yet).
So, is it possible that someone can explain me how I make this brushes in AD or it would be nice if someone do it for me
I attached you the ad file with the pre made shapes
This is how they look
Thank you in advance

2989 reacted to tallulahlucy in .ai files (brush sets) will work in AD?
Can confirm it will not work.
I recently made that same mistake and there is absolutely no way to use those brushes if you don't already own Adobe Illustrator (which I think most of us don't, otherwise we wouldn't buy Designer) in order to convert them manually. I wish there was some kind of tool that could extract them and let you convert them, but there isn't.

2989 reacted to roh821z in .ai files (brush sets) will work in AD?
That's a really brutal process, I'm quite surprised Affinity doesn't have the ability to import brushes from AI after all these years. Is the Design Cuts link really still the only "easy" way to do it?

2989 reacted to bgarrant in Will Designer and Photo get Studio Link?
Will Affinity Designer and Photo get Studio Link options? It is an amazing feature when inside Publisher. It makes it so easy to jump from one app to the other. Can we please get these in Designer and Photo so we no longer have to use the "Edit with Designer" menu option?

That works but is a major PITA and completely unintuitive. In this case Photoshop wins for being simple and intuitive.

2989 reacted to createsean in Cropping in Designer
So I'm trying to crop a photo using Affinity designer and it's pretty much impossible to figure out. In Photoshop I grab the crop tool and crop so simple. With affinity I can't figure it out at all. I tried this tutorial but it's not working and is overly complicated for something that should be a simple task.
How can I easily crop a photo with affinity designer?

Andy...
In response to your comment about Studio Presets – it would be extraordinarily confusing to have a preset update itself when a change is made. In my mind (and only mine, for now), what good is a preset if it is that fluid? To me, the whole idea of a preset is that I can come back to it at any time; in that scenario, it should be stable (in the sense of not updating itself).
Also, how would I ever make a second preset? If I start at my default studio, add and subtract and move around studio panels, then create another preset, it seems I would have 2 presets that have become the same. The only way to do this would be to create the second preset at the beginning and then start changing things. To me (again, this is only me for now) this is the exact opposite of what I would expect.
Obviously, your game and your rules. But I think you'll get more traction (and user acceptance) if the studio presets don't update themselves.
