Have you ever looked into supporting Linkback on the Mac? It would allow programs that create mathematical equations (using LaTeX or whatever) to place the resulting images, and when you double click on them (with affinity programs), they would launch the appropriate editor, and re-embed the result when done. This would allow specialized tools (math, chemistry, generated images) to be used seamlessly.
