Thanks for your reply, I've tried all the way up to 32GB (with a program relaunch after each setting change). Unfortunately the program still crashes.

Currently I'm getting around this issue by loading text in a new (empty) document and then copying and pasting the layer into the existing complex documents.

I've upgraded to 1.10.1.1142 and am now experiencing an application close, seemingly each time I attempt to use the text tool on more complex documents (containing nested groups, overlay layers, masks etc). In terms of troubleshooting: I have turned off the hardware acceleration option in preferences lowered my ram use limit in case it was accidently hitting some kind of system limit (but I have 48GB installed) performed a full clean install of my nvidia drivers checked the known 3rd part issues list and can't see anything there that I use.
