  1. Hi, I really wish I could dock the "Tools" to the right of the screen: either to the left of Right Studio or to its right (basically at the right edge of the screen).. or even horizontally at the top. To me it is a big annoyance when using the Affinity suite that the only choice is docked as it is now or undocked (I don't like undocked anything usually). I would imagine it is annoying for many right-handed people.. a decent number of people are right handed no ?!!

    Publisher - Links Panel?

Indeed Bogdan, I hate floating windows, they should definitely copy InDesign a little more.. considering how much they already did ;0) A whole host of reasons Adobe won the Desktop publishing battle, and ergonomy is one of them.
  3. Without global layers there is no way I could switch to Publisher. And that's only one of the issues, but definitely a major one ! Imagine laying out a magazine that way, Hello ?!! LoL I guess it is very hard for them to implement considering that if I understand well they want their 3 applications to be able to juggle the same files. As long as I have to use InDesign I will likely remain in the Adobe Ecosystem. For now I have only played with the Affinity Apps but not used them professionally. I'm sure they sold a lot.. but does that mean buyers are converts ? I sill see all this as potential in a bit of a pipe dream way.
  4. Hi, I have a very hard time understanding the slices and export. 1/ SLICES Should a slice not automatically be created from a layer.. ALWAYS ? Did I miss something? it seems to be it does at times and at other times it does not. 2/ LAYER DUPLICATE.. and SLICES When I duplicate a layer containing my design, rename it to something else than the original (say original is called Flyer.. and dupliate is renamed Web banner) it becomes a truly new layer thus shouldn't a new slice be automatically created at this juncture or am I totally off-base and shouldn't that slice inherit the name of the renamed layer also? 3/ UNITS If a file is set up as a print file, I think I can enter pixel unit in the Transform toolbox using px next to the number (though that box still shows mm).. and thus use pixel values for resizing layers that need to be in px for exports (my projects often include having to create both print and web elements). I'd swear at times entering pixel values in the Transform yields correct pixel exports and at times not at all.. Basically I'm trying to understand where I bug and where the software bugs.. as when different outcomes happen after a similar sequence of events.. I get totally confused not getting the expected result. PLEASE point me me to very clear Youtube or video tutorials (I need images to understand I do very badly with text tuts) .. H E L P At this point things I did farily easily if not very easily using Adobe products are still quite complex in affinity.. guess my brain is not yet matched to this way of thinking. I'm off Adobe but at times I miss it still.. I was hoping the switch would be slightly more intuitive. THX
  5. I'd like the Apple Color Picker (View..) to have a shortcut.. AND to appear as a Studio toolbox even.. should be possible no? Or even allow the user to specify if they want to use the Affinity Color Toolbox or the Apple one by default.

    Docking Tools-Box right side

Same here.. better yet would be to be able to dock it to the right of the screen and to the left of the Right Studio. Most humans are right-handed, and screen are bigger and bigger (not sure why UI devs keep using certain of these outdated paradigms). Can't be that hard to implement is it ? Adobe has so many things right with their docking and folding options, would Affinity run into "rights" issues if they lift too many ideas from them?
  7. There are a few things I wish would be possible with colors: - Ability to select and delete several colors at once from swatches - When one deletes a global color, the software should ask if one wants it to be replaced by another one.. so that all elements using the deleted color then become the new chosen replacement one (or at least tell the user that he's about to delete a color that is actually used in their graphic. Hope these can be implemented..
  8. I feel like I'm on a hill, close to the top.. and that when I get there I'll hopefully feel "fluent enough" with Affinity. I originally got both apps as soon as they came out as everything about Adobe is bloated, too many apps, most of which I have no use for, the subscription of course and just that I hate when a company has a monopoly. I have to stick to Affinity, suffer a little (I barely touched my Affinity apps until very recently, always going back to Adobe out of laziness). Thanks for the uplift.
  9. Thanks a lot for all your answers.. 1. Well my slices were created automatically from each board I had created, but not when I then duplicate one of these boards. Maybe that is because when I create a new file I click the checkbox "Create artboard" below units that it then acts that way.. 2. Units do work as you say, more or less, they always seem to add a pixel here and there: 300px entered in the mm box becomes 301px upon export etc.. I like precision even if only for basic web banners (I don't do UI design but that would be a real issue there) so I'm now changing units at the file level when working on a web banner and switching back when working on a flyer for example (I have files containing both, so I can work on all of them at once), I wish there were a simple toggle button right in the toolbar for that. I also wish the toolbar could be attached to the right side as in Adobe (I hate a floating toolbar just a little less that a toolbar on the left (I'm right-handed.. so rare...!!!). ________________________________ There are certain things I don't like with Designer.. when you place an object/image, the part outside the board does not show, which is good but limited, it would be good at times to actually see the whole image and its edge without having to select it first (as you can toggle viewing "frames" in InDesign for example).. And I really hate that you cannot fold the "studio", you can hide it all or show it (I really like the way Adobe approaches the folding and having several levels of tools not just one column on each side). So at times my brain feels the interface is quirky.. maybe when I really get use to it all.. I understand they cannot totally copy Adobe, but Adobe had decades to figure certain things out with their UI's, not all good of course but many are) _________________________________ What's gonna make or break it for me over time is the "upcoming" "Publisher... loooong waait.. end of 2018 they say.. if I find I can work with the trio pleasantly then I'll possibly be an Affinity person.. Not sure the level of precision in typography will be up to par, will kerning, justification etc match Adobe's.. unlikely.. Adobe composer in InDesign is quite advanced. Right now I work with InDesign a lot and still compare when it comes to overall UI... when I switch from InDesign to say Affinity Designer.. I sort of feel like I am switching to a more toy-like environment. Thanks again!
  10. I feel very much let down by this "community".. am thinking of going back to Adobe.. No answer from any Affinity people (whom I think should be doing the job..).. makes me feel like Apple forums where lost people try and help each other (when you are lucky enough that someone took the time to try) and Apple never ever reacts to any question, bug issue etc (likely to protect their ass legally and pretend no issue exists) until they release some sort of blanket statement and/or fix.. is this the society we're building, the Amazon cashier-free style of "deal with it monkeys." Sad, very sad.
  11. Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to fill a colored area of a bitmap logo to a different color yet keep the transparency around it (original was a png). In Photoshop I could just select "fill" then pick my fill color and check the keep transparency checkbox.. How do I achieve this in AP ? THX
  12. Hello, tools remain on top of the Finder window when opening a file (no issue when saving.. then it remain in the back as it should). Thanks
  13. Hello, Am not sure what Display pref is best for me.. I have an aging : MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012 Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1 GB Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB Metal seems to make the fans work up a storm and the interface get sluggish.. Who is Metal good for? Much newer Macs ? And what is the difference between Open GL Open GL using integrated GPU Open GL Basic Open GL Basic using integrated GPU and finally Metal.. in real world scenarios not so much theoretical blah blah.- thanks
  14. Thanks I've read all these types of infos many times over over the years (except for Metal which is pretty new to my .. I've tried all options many times with AD (and Adobe before) (as I do with all soft.. 3D, video etc). I was hoping for a very clear cut answer.. as In.. "for YOUR computer your best bet is..". In any case I feel Metal kicks up the fans and responsiveness starts lagging so I guess Metal is out of the picture for my computer. As for the various Open GL options I cannot really sense any difference..
  15. Hello, I have questions, things that are not clear to me yet 1/ From what I understand even though the file extensions are different for Photo and Designer one can still use a same file in both environments and switch back and forth ? So it is really a unique format ? Seems on can even create Artboards in Designer that then become accessible in Photo.. It's a bit mind-boggling thinking of a truly common format and cannot find much on it in tutorials.. 2/ I understand that when an image in placed in an Affinity, a copy is embedded*.. it retains its original dimensions (pixel and definition). However when one resizes the image there seems to be no way to know how much in % the image is now compared to its original form. As long as one makes the embedded image smaller then fine, no problem, but what if you enlarge it.. would be good to see 110% etc in info... upon export to pdf for print will that image have lower dpi than that of the file ? T H A N K S PS: *Also is there no way to just link an external image into a file ? Any link to existing tutorials concerning raster file management is welcome ! :0)
  16. Thanks Peter ! It's amazing they can use the same format.. I cannot wait to try Publisher Beta... next few months hopefully..., my only last link to Adobe is InDesign..
  17. Hi, I'm curious as to the capacities you are thinking of integrating in Publisher and Photo. CONCERNING PUBLISHER WILL YOU BE ABLE TO INCLUDE: - Hi-end justification and kerning, and overall pro-level typography.. so far apart from iCalamus, all the "smaller" DTP apps I've seen on Mac are very unprofessional and make them unusable in "real world" design situations. - Ability to import InDesign (or XPress.. not my worry anymore.. but) files. As to me this would be the deal maqker or breaker, I have so many files I repurpose, it would be hard making a switch if that weren't case. It's also how able to make the switch from XPress to InDesgin yar ago, I could import my old XPress files (not alaways perfectly but sufficiently to feel I could switch. I'd love to leave the Adobe "sphere" but InDesign is really what keeps me there. - Ability to place layerd files from your Photo app.. and only turn on a selected layer (as one can do woth Photoshop files in InDesign). - Advanced Pre-press preflighting, batch pdf export, of single pages for large fiels (magazines and such). CONCERNING PHOTO.. - Anything like Smart Objects in the works.. allowing to embed Designer vector files and edit them back in Designer.
  18. Hi, I expect to be able to proportionallly resize a placed image holding the caps key but it does not function that way in Affinity Designer... It works on vectors though. Bug or "feature" It works using the Option or Command key (depending on whether one want to resize from an angle or the center.. But I'm so used to the Adobe shortcuts that it is a bit puzzling. And ultimately, why are the resizing options different between vectors and placed images ? Confusing. THX
  19. I cannot think of moving away from Adobe as long as I don't have a DTP app with justification, kerning and overall typographic tools that match professional standards.. and if Affinity can do this with Publisher, and add things like "Smart Objects" in their Photo app, and the ability to place layered Photo files in their Publisher app in which one could turn on or off certain layers.. I'd already feel like some of my requests/hopes were being answered.. Also it takes some time working with an app/suite to actually realize "oh crap.. I cannot do this with this set of tools.." And then decide if it's a deal-breaker or if the workflow is somehow manageable approcaching things a bit differently. Also it's a bit scary diving ointo a new app, and creating all sorts of files that can be opend only by this very app. Of course one could export the file each time as part of a wroflow, in eps for examplemin the case of Designer.. but in real life.. that adds a step. We know Adobe has been around for ages now (since I graduated from design school) and will more likely be around until I retire ;0) So it's a sure bet in terms of worry-free file management. I remember an interim period from when Macromedia was swallowed up and until Illustrator or even Flash (which did it quite well) were able to open Freehand files, during this period I was stuck with an aging Freehand 11MX that started crashing over OS updates.. and the worry of not being able to open my old files (I even spent days jsut exporting them to eps whn I had free time but not all of them).. and I imagine many people like me repurpose old files, logo elements and so on.. So for me it's important to always be able to access one's old files. Similar with XPress.. something Adobe addressed by allowing to open XPress files (with more or less success.. but still..) and that drew me to trust InDesign as an XPress replacement in the first place. (At one point I even tried replacing the whole thing with Canvas.. Antoher one bites the dust *sigh*. I loved the "all-in-one" idea). _______________ In any case I think Affinity deserves to be helped in building this Trinity Suite ;0) As any professional competition to Adobe is welcome.. and so far the only DTP "competition" is far from professional.. Swift Publisher and such are toys.. And a suite approach is definitely a clever move. _______________ PS: I wish there were a standard of sorts for DTP files, like we have say eps or to some extent svg for vectors and tiff or psd for raster. That'd make life much easier and more "democratic." At some point eons ago I thought pdf could become that.. but nope.
