Workaround for font problem with placed PDFs
Catshill replied to fiëé's topic in V1 Bugs found on macOS
Indeed I was pretty certain that Inkscape did not need fonts installed to render PDFs and the output them to curves. That said I will revert to the pdf2png method as I find the results more reliable. -
The function is also present on the Naim forum which gives you a horizontal last visit line https://community.naimaudio.com/new

Another way of converting fonts to curves is to use the Microsoft print driver to create a pdf. It has been pointed out elsewhere that you need to check the output does match the original when using these applications. I have found that some elements go missing or are not right after conversion. It is for this reason, I invariably convert to a PNG when I am sent a pdf with embedded fonts I don’t have. There is a useful post on this topic here http://latex-my.blogspot.com/2012/01/text-to-path-conversion-with.html

Thanks @andy5812 for replying. I did read that thread but it wasn't a solution as it wasn't a case of missing fonts. Thanks too to @Dan C confirming that it is not possible to merge styles. After experimenting I think I have sort of found a workaround... From Google Docs choose Download RTF - Open file in MS Word and copy text containing bold and italic formatting. In APub use Edit > Paste - Text retains bold and italics but also creates a new style based on the Word style formatting From Text Styles tab select hamburger icon to the right of the required style (body text in my case). Choose "Apply body text to paragraphs and preserve character formatting"* - This is the key bit for my issue Caveat - This method will retain the font size (as well as spelling language and character fill) from the original so either change it in Word before copy or do it in APub once pasted. I also deleted the text style(s) carried across from Word. A sanity check for the above would be appreciated.

Your Affinity 2020 wishlist

PDF passthrough is definitely my number one request too -
Is it possible to import text into a Publisher text frame, set a text style and retain bold and italic styles? I copy and paste text from Google docs or MS Word into a text frame and use a default publisher base style to set. The only attributes I need are bold and italics but the Paragraph base style changes these to non bold and non italics. I am looking for a merge styles option . I want to keep the base paragraph style in Publisher in order to retain consistency across many imported text files.

When I am sent a pdf and I don’t have one of more of the fonts, my preferred workaround is to convert the pdf with pdf2png.

Could a crowdfunding option work? If enough users put in x amount to fund time for a developer to work on a missing feature...

Try... https://www.ioniqforum.com/

Sort of the latter. In other forums I use when I read latest posts I eventually get to a horizontal line above whIch it says... The following threads (or could be posts) have not been updated since your last visit.

By ‘other’ forums I meant other than the Affinity one. It is a feature request but one that I find useful when listing unread posts elsewhere.

When using the view latest posts function on other forums, I get a separator that says: The following threads have not been updated since your last visit could we have this facility here please?

Sorry I meant png. Have corrected my post. When I receive pdfs from a customer they do not need to be edited, hence my workaround. -

Why is this method better than 1. converting the pdf to a png or 2. Flattening the pdf in Inkscape?
