  1. While the ability to edit PDFs is nice, I would also like the ability to embed a PDF without it being "translated"/"interpreted". To have "PDF pass-through". If Publisher could access the fonts embedded in the PDF, that would be AWESOME; I don't always have the fonts installed that are used in PDFs, and the entire purpose of the format is to be able to share a layout without having to install fonts to see it displayed correctly.
  2. I appreciate all the effort that everyone is doing in analyzing my original PDF from BusyCal. So, again, I appreciate the statement, but if my underlying PDF has a combination of problems, I can't figure out why Publisher is the only app that appears to have a problem with it. All other apps read the PDF just fine. With all respect, @MikeW , I'd have to agree with @music2bmade. Publisher's inability to read embedded fonts may not be a bug, but Publisher almost seems to be working hard to defeat the purpose of the file format, just for the sake of being able to edit the file type. Just now this issue reared it's ugly head in a different way: I downloaded a news bulletin to insert into my handout, and since I did not have the fonts embedded in the PDF, Publisher is not able to interpret the PDF correctly, even though the fonts are embedded in the file. (The font at issue in the case is DecaSerif). As an editor who relies on this in my layouts, it's fairly maddening. I realize this isn't a bug, and that PDF pass-through and access to embedded fonts will come, but for me it can't come soon enough. So for now I'll take @music2bmade's work-around, and convert my PDFs to TIFF, but I will miss the scalability of the original PDF file.
  3. In Publisher I'm unable to figure the following out: How to create rounded corners for text boxes (I know how to do it for picture frames) How to create rounded corners on just two corners, and leave the other two corners sharp Any assistance would be appreciated.
  4. This is good to know, but personally this isn't the issue (as the OP) I'm experiencing. I'm using calendar software (BusyCal) on the same Mac I have Publisher installed, so when I create the PDF from BusyCal, it is using local fonts to create it. So if the above were entirely true, Publisher shouldn't have issue bringing this PDF, but it does. I assume it is because Publisher tries to interpret the characters in the PDF, so the PDF can be editable. I'm sure that many appreciate the ability to edit PDFs, but I personally don't need it very often. I wish Publisher provided the option to turn that off, and just display the PDF as is.
  5. @Wosven thanks for that tip. I didn't notice that in the export settings. That will be helpful; will give it a shot if the cleaning of the cache doesn't work.
  6. No. I'll clear my font cache none the less, just in case. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm using the ones from Google Fonts. They are installed via my font manager, RightFonts Interesting points. I'll uninstall the Google Fonts and give the Font Squirrel versions a try instead. So I opened the PDF in Acrobat. Not sure how I would inspect a font selection in Acrobat, but the list of embedded fonts reveals nothing unusual; everything listed is what I used for the newsletter.
  7. Yes, as a workaround I created a duplicate of the Publisher file, and converted the text boxes that weren't exporting correct to curves. This worked of course, but it is less than ideal, as it creates A LOT of extra steps just for the sake of printing a copy. And if changes have to be made, you have to go back to the file with the live text, make a dupe, and convert to curves all of again.
  8. Mac OS X 10.14.5 (18F132) So due to the bug in Publisher regarding color spaces and printing, I downgraded to v1.7.1. Now when I try to use Studiolink in Publisher I get a pop-up that Affinity Designer and Photo are not installed... even though they are. They are, however, the versions 1.7.2. Do I need to downgrade these as well to make certain Studiolink works? Or is there something else I could do to restore Studiolink?
  9. Jon P, being relatively new to Affinity apps, what's the fastest way to change the color space of an embedded doc within Publisher?
  10. Affinity Publisher v1.7.2 Mac OS X 10.14.5 (18F132) Workflow: Due to the bug introduced in v1.7.2 regarding embedded documents with a different color space to the original document crash when printing, I've been attempting to do a print from PDF workflow I export to PDF using the PDF (for print) preset It opens in preview, and a number of fonts are not being exported/interpreted correctly. In the screen grab it is Raleway that is getting jumbled, but only the regular styling, not the italic styling. In a different file, a newsletter that I needed to export to PDF because it was also crashing on print, I had a similar issue; but the scrambling of Raleway was intermittent; on some pages in the PDF it displayed just fine, while on others it would be jumbled. This only seems to be affecting the Raleway font. I'm unable to use a substitute font, as our graphic standards have been using this font for our copy for years. I suspect this may have something to do the figure style of the font. The font appears to be jumbled on pages where the figure styling was left on the "default." On pages where it is not jumbled, I think the font has a style applied that has changing the figure style to "lining." This was not an issue when I exported a PDF of my newsletter last month using v1.7.1.
  11. I was using what Busycal referred to as "System Font Regular" originally, which I think on MacOS High Sierra is San Francisco. It MAY be an OpenType Postscript, but I'm basing that info off of other fonts from Apple; I can't find the font in my font manager. The alternate I tried was Walkway Condensed Bold. It is a TrueType font. It does not have any alternates, stylistic sets nor character variants when I open the Typography panel in Publisher. I'd be interested in workarounds. I suppose I continue trying other fonts, but ones I've tried in the past don't work very well for my layout. The calendar software doesn't offer lots of type adjusting features, aside from picking another font. Most other fonts either have too much character spacing, or line spacing, and I need to economize in all those regards to fit as many lines of text as possible into each day on the calendar. Exporting a PDF from my calendar software and placing them into my layout has worked for me in other desktop publishing software. Would be nice if Affinity Publisher could do the same. I don't need the characters in the PDF interpreted; I just need the vector info contained within the PDF displayed and printed as is.
  12. Affinity Publisher v1.7.2 Mac OS X 10.14.5 (18F132) My workflow: In a separate calendar app (BusyCal) I edit calendars that I've imported from Google Calendar. I export the calendar to PDF by printing it to PDF. I place the PDF into my newsletter. The results: Publisher is incorrectly interpreting the colons in the PDF. Instead of displaying colons, it is displaying an odd looking "A". I've attempted this several times, and have even tried using different fonts in my calendar app, thinking that Publisher doesn't like the font. Results are the same each time. I am able to edit the "embedded" PDF (it's supposed to be linked) within Publisher, and can replace the "A"s with colons manually, so it does not appear to be a font issue. I'm not able to find and replace, as Publisher isn't able to display this "A" in the find field. The same PDF file displays correctly in Preview. Expectation: Publisher places/links to the PDF file as is Calendar LINKED - OVERWRITE letter.pdf
  13. So, this isn't really related to my original post, but as it came up as part of the answer, I've a follow up question: is there a way to have a different node become the end node; in other words, move the end node from one node to another?
  14. Thanks for the tip. That did work. Just not used to not being able to select segments.
  15. No, I don't want to delete the node. I don't want to delete any nodes. Not sure why that node is red. I took the screen shot simply to show the segments I was trying to select. So there is no way to select segments in Designer?
  16. So I'm trying really hard to figure out Designer. I apologize for these nuub questions, but I'm just not finding answers in the forum, the help files nor the video tutorials. So I have the letter "A" that I've created curves for, and I want to delete the cross bar. Again, cannot figure out how I would select those two segments of the shape. I don't want to delete any nodes; I'd rather leave those and join them back together. How does one go about selecting (and in my case deleting) segments of a shape? I've tried selecting the shape with the node tool, and then dragging over the segments, but when I go to delete it the entire shape is deleted, not just the segments. If I click on the segments with the node tool, it appears to add nodes to the segment, not select the segments.
  17. Noob question: So I have a letter that I've converted to curves, and I want to tweak the letter form a bit. One thing I'd like to do is delete one of the serifs in the letter, and then lengthen the extender. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to select the nodes in the serif, other then shift clicking on every single node, which is would be very tedious because of all of the curves in the serif. I've tried using the node tool and clicking and dragging over the serif of the font, but nothing is selected. I've looked through the tutorials, but all I can find is how to select the entire object, or how to modify a single node. Any help with this would be appreciated.
  18. So I created a newsletter in Publisher, set to link placed files instead of embedding. Within the newsletter I place ads that I also created in Publisher, as separate Publisher files. So when I place the ads, the Resource Manager shows the ad as being linked, as is expected. However, when I edit the ad from within Publisher, it doesn't edit the linked file. CURRENT BEHAVIOR I double click the ad and a file opens in Publisher... but it isn't the linked file. It reads <Embedded>. Any edits done to this <Embedded> file are not reflected in the actual file that is linked. EXPECTED/DESIRED BEHAVIOR When I double click on a linked Publisher file, that it open the original Publisher file that it is linked to.
  19. So I have a layout that has numerous text boxes, that was originally designed for 8.5x11". I want to scale the design down to 5.5x8.5". How do I scale the text boxes so that when I scale them down, the font is resized automatically? Currently this is what is happening: I grab a handle of a text box that contains 12 point font, and scale it down. The text box scales down, but the font within does not. The font stays the same size (12 point), and eventually the words in the textbox simply overflow the textbox, because they no longer fit within the smaller dimensions of the scaled textbox. What I am trying to achieve: I grabe a handle of a text box that contains 12 point font, and scale it down. The text box scales down, as does the font within. The font goes from 12 point to whatever is need to keep its layout within the textbox (let's say 9 points). The words in the textbox don't overflow, as they maintain their original layout within the textbox. Ideally I want to achieve this without converting to curves, as I want to retain the ability to edit the text.
