So... How is this coming along? I have a drawing made in AD that combines and subtracts a couple of ellipses and has some outlines. It's been expanded twice. The result is thousands of nodes in the outside outline. Totally un-editable. Manual reduce is inefficient and often inaccurate.
I wonder how hard it is to add a reduce nodes feature. CorelDraw 3, about 25 years ago, did this quite well enough and had a slider to choose the reduction/accuracy ratio. It's been requested 6 years ago. Is it really that hard?

I can't fathom how anyone using lines can do without it...

    Hi DutchDude,

That is the correct behaviour, unticking Separated Mode will return you back to the standard view. The 'Merge All Windows' will put all open documents into a single floating window with tabs when using Separated Mode.

I accidentally pushed the Separated mode button in the View menu and couldn't get the windows back together again. Merge all windows doesn't do that, dragging them together doesn't either. Apparently pushing "separated Mode" again puts them back together. Glad I thought of that. I hated that about the Gimp.

Ah. It's a bug. Just found it in the bugs. I thought I'd maybe missed something.
    Sorry to bother you.
Move right along... Nothing to see here...

If you Cut the item (Edit > Cut) then select the layer in the layers panel of the layer you want it in front of, then do a paste, by default it will be pasted just in front of that layer

Have you considered dragging the layer in the Layers panel?

If you can live with a workaround, Inkscape can open .cdr files and export them to formats readable by AD.

    Hi DutchDude,
You can already change between the two selection "types" (all objects crossing the marquee or just the ones enclosed by it) on the fly in Designer and Photo 1.5 Beta pressing ⌃(ctrl) while you are drawing the marquee.

    Hi DutchDude,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
You're describing quite a few different issues here. I'm not sure i've understood all but will try to help wherever i can.

The lines running at 45 degrees:
I'm not sure what may be happening here. Any chance you can take a screenshot of the program window so we can see what's going on?
To take a screenshot of an application window on OS X, press ⇧ (shift) + ⌘ (cmd) + 4, then Space and place the camera icon over the window you want to capture, then click. The screenshot will be placed on your desktop. To upload/attach it to the forum follow the steps on this clip.

Regarding the purple lines around the objects:
Those purple lines serve to identify objects that are snapping candidates. To disable the purple outline go to menu View ▸ Snapping Manager... and uncheck Show snapping candidates almost on top.
To learn more about snapping candidates check this video tutorial - Snapping: Object Creation

    Regarding desktop background:
I'm not sure how you have changed it accidentally but if you right-click on an empty area of the desktop and select Change Desktop Background... you should be able to replace the original from the Apple section, Desktop Pictures folder.

It's normal to experience a few issues when changing from one OS that you were already familiar with to a new one. Things will become more easier and will make more sense as you get used to it.
Meanwhile i would try to take a look at some video tutorials or the Apple support site to learn more about OS X.
