  1. I've had some Blue Screen of Death crashes this week from different files, different photos. On reboot, the files behave. Windows talks of a Thread error when it works through its Blue Screen of Death. happened three times on press day this week - we were late to print as a result.
  2. You're quite right, wasn't thinking I'll need to think how to make clear for a multi-person workflow
  3. Has to be. I opened my file, changed the bleed from 0 to 0.1 and column guides displayed. Magic! Only trouble is I can't have bleeds on these pages.
  4. If it helps, here's one of our page files where the columns won't display in 1.9
  5. This is interesting - it works. I wonder why the pages we've been working from aren't transferring? And here it is in 1.9
  6. Hi Gabe, Yes, every document - admittedly I'm only looking at our newspaper pages, and not any other document created in 1.8. Would it help me to try creating in 1.8 a random document with column guides and see if problem persists?
  7. Right ... uninstalled beta. Reinstalled from fresh download. Opened up a page of our newspaper - no column guides. Go to new document, create column guides - they display. So the issue looks like it's with the opening of a document created in 1.8.5.703 - the information is not carrying over.
  8. I've tried what i *think* is resetting the application - holding CTRL as I open the Affinity Beta. But no joy - have tried this twice now, but same result. How do you reset the application?!
  9. Just rebooted and checked - not showing for me and I'm on a PC. Wonder what could be causing it if it's displaying correctly for you guys?
  10. Hi all, I've seen this bug logged on previous versions, so apologies if this is repeated information. The column guides are not displaying in 1.9.0.850. They're set up correctly and display when page opened in retail version. Baseline grid shows, grid shows. Just not the column guides. Thanks
  11. Thanks for all your hard work. It's amazing to see. I need to park my experiments for a few days as I've got to concentrate on producing this week's paper.
  12. HI Dominik, Thank you for your patience with me. I've just tried what you suggested, but instead of calling in all rows - including the field headers which are needed for this to work - it's calling in just the first row. I'm not sure this is going to work for me for now. It needs to be a bit more idiot proof before this idiot can use it! The principle is there and that excites me.
  13. I'd be interested to know where I'm going wrong Dominik, as I couldn't get it to work for me - admittedly I was fiddling to see what worked rather than being precise with my formula.
  14. Thanks Dominik - really helpful answer. In theory the tables should stay the same but sometimes team names go over two lines, such as the last team in the list. It's been seven months since I last did a league table in Affinity - thanks Covid - so I can't remember what I did for the previous method, but I think it was set up with the table colouring every other row. Cut and pasting the table manually meant that it always added an additional column which had to be deleted. I look forward to this developing. In the previous (ahem) software I used, it updated the tables every week once the Excel file had been updated. Hopefully this will be where Affinity gets to. That and being able to import Google Drive directly ...
  15. If I can get this to work, it will be a game changer for our newspaper's sports tables. Before the virus wiped out the season, I was cut and pasting the data from website > Excel > Affinity, and tidying up accordingly. With more than 20 tables it was an evening's work. The big deal would, I think, be the automatic update of the Excel data. For the moment, my initial dabbling does not bring the results I'd wish for. Importing using Dominik's guidance doesn't bring in the whole table, while formatting the imported data is a faff. I'm all for more control over the formating of the cells - you can see our house style below. Can Affinity automatically tint every other row outside of the header? The hardest thing for me is that we're so busy producing the weekly content that we've not got a lot of time to play.
  16. Thanks Pauls, I'll have to wait until Thursday - we're dealing with a lot of additional news caused by the coronavirus so I'm run ragged at both ends
  17. Good morning Yesterday, we sent to press our first issue produced in 1.8 off - following a massive news week for us thanks to a certain virus. We ended up with three problems which has left us a bit baffled. - We couldn't PDF some pages. The workaround was to save as an EPS and then run through distiller - Some of the EPSes we are using for artwork were corrupted in the outputted PDF - quite critical when these are advertisements - Some of the files (pages) couldn't be opened by some members of the team. It didn't seem logical - person X could open A and C, but not B, person Y could open A and B but not C and person Z could open B but not A and C And also... - Some of the PDFs seem incredibly large for what they should be - around 9mb, 10mb for roughly an A3 file. Under our *cough* previous DTP programme, these would be a fraction of the size. - Also had problems with ligatures - And found it really, really difficult to select text in a table to edit. As these are sports results, it's a pain. On the bright side, it no longer adds additional columns for the sake of it! Thanks Phil
  18. Thanks, I'll try that myself. We do these things on autopilot sometimes - save it as PDF/X:4 standard click OK...
  19. Thanks Pauls, really appreciate. Every day is a learning curve here and I'm grateful to you for the opportunity to find out what's gone wrong.
  20. This is a must have for us as well. I've got a workaround though ... We still have our Creative Suite 5.5 Acrobat, which allows us to save a PDF as an EPS file. Importing the EPS file into Publisher works!
  21. Hi all, We have had an unfortunate problem occur in this week's newspaper and I'm trying to nail down the issue. The client approved a PDF proof of their advert, created in Affinity Publisher. Prints fine, looks fine, everyone happy. But when it is placed on the Affinity page of the newspaper, most of the ligatures corrupt. In the attached screenshot, the original Affinity PDF is on the right, with the dodgy ligatures circled, while the one of the left is a new PDF where we have opted to save the Text as curves. It shouldn't be a typeface issue as the column is typeset in Calibri. And surely a PDF created in Affinity should import correctly into Affinity? (in summary, we have workaround, but baffled as to how it happens in first place) As ever, thanks for your help and thoughts :)
  22. Hi all, We have a problem that's been bugging me for a few weeks now - when selecting styles in a document the previous style is sticking to the selected one. The only way that I can correct it is to clear character styles. It happens on 90% of documents, regardless of whether text box is cut and pasted from another document or a fresh file. Is there a way of ensuring that the stylesheets switch automatically? What am I doing wrong?! thanks Phil
