IDMarkz will do exactly that, enable you to open your CS3 InDesign documents in Affinity Publisher. It does so by converting the INDD files to IDML and opening the IDML in Affinity Publisher, but that's all done with a simple click of a button. But, "without problems" is a bit subjective. In many cases you'll need to make minor updates to the document to handle the differences in the apps. Things like text flow will be different, you may need to adjust text boxes. The vast majority of conversions will get you 95%+ of the way to your final document. IDMarkz Product Page -

You're right, IDML import is probably a better option than the PDF import. Keep in mind that even the IDML import will likely require some updates in Publisher. If you're looking for a long-term IDML solution, you can take a look at IDMarkz, which can convert your old CS3 documents to IDML and open those in Publisher directly, without InDesign. IDMarkz is sold as both a macOS and Windows application. And can be purchased with a perpetual (forever) or subscription (annual) license. It's not free, but for $149, you can have peace of mind knowing that you can quickly convert any of your existing InDesign files to Affinity Publisher. We've found that many users use IDMarkz to use InDesign Templates (indt) in Affinity Publisher. InDesign has been around forever, so there are tons of free and paid templates out there for it. Most of the templates will be in indt format, which Affinity Publisher isn't able to open. IDMarkz can convert those files to IDML and open them in Affinity Publisher. Thanks for the plug @AdrianB. Any of you guys on a Mac looking for a way to convert your native InDesign files to Affinity Publisher (through IDML), IDMarkz, might be the tool you need. As many of you have mentioned, this can be done using InDesign, but if you're looking for a long-term solution that makes the process seamless, check out this video showing how simple the conversion process is. The video shows the process with an older version of Publisher, but the current version will convert using an IDML rather than PDF. Thanks Alex. We received your file this morning and I took a look at it. I see what your talking about. We have to update our conversion to handle some text wrapping settings in the master page that we hadn't run across before. I appreciate you sending us the file so we can improve our conversions. We should be able to get an update out early next week.

Hey Alex, I'm glad you found the issue. Would it be possible for you to send us your INDD file? I'd like to take a look at it and see if it's a problem with our conversion, the way that Publisher is handling the IDML, or just something with your particular file. If it's something with our conversion we'll fix it. If it's a problem with how Publisher is handling the IDML, we can pass the information along to Affinity. Or if it's just something odd with your particular file we can give more info. Both us, Markzware, and Affinity are constantly improving the conversion and importing of IDML so these odd issues are interesting to us when they arise.
