Hilltop reacted to GarryP in Please Please... Provide some way to stroke a selection.
If you make a copy from the selection, paste it, and then add an Outline Effect to the pasted layer, with the Fill Opacity of the effect set to 0% you can achieve something that might be useful – see attached video.
Note that, as can be seen in the video, the underlying background image, the one that the effect has been applied to, is still ‘active’ as part of the effect so that you can edit it in various ways.

Hilltop reacted to Patrick Connor in Wish list for Affinity Designer: FontMaker
@11Arts
Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums
Serif staff don't normally comment on feature requests, but I'm disappointed that your first post has been in some respects derided, sorry.
I also doubt Serif would implement this anytime soon, but I appreciate you telling us it's important to you.

Hilltop reacted to Old Bruce in AFPub: text and paragraph styles tutorial wanted
The key is to use Group Style(s) it is for some unfathomable reason the little S in the Styles panel. The [No Style] styles should be
I set up a Group Style, I call it Base. I set the Font, and the Spacing sections, I usually change everything in those two sections from [No change] to what I want/need. Anything that I want the bulk of the text to have. Then I make a Paragraph Style called Bulk/Basic/Normal/Whatever and in that I base it on Base. I also make a Group Style for the Headings.
Some projects will have
Base. - a Group Bulk 1st Paragraph Last Paragraph Caption Headings - a Group Page Header Page Number Chapter Name Section Name Other projects will have many more.
I make my own Italic Bold and Bold-Italic Character settings. I base these on [No Style] and change only the Bold and or Italic settings.

I’m not sure if all mice support long clicks, but using the right mouse button to get the drop-down menu seems like a good idea to me!

Hilltop reacted to Iajhy in Tools for productivity
Hello!!
I did some suggestions a while ago, using Affinity Designer 1.x as a reference, but I think it totally applies to version 2 as well. Hope you guys find useful ☺️
Quick Menu - Pen Context Menu (hold “Q”)
This suggestion brings a context sensitive function. In this example, while using bezier, the QM offers all the main options related to it. We can use this radial menu in profundity to activate or toggle certain options without losing the same ring layout.
Reference Box:
This suggestion can be a significant addition for industrial designers, concept artists and mattepainters.
The user could drag and drop, or copy from clipboard, any reference image inside this panel, also can drag inside the artboard as well. Could navigate vertically sweeping up and down, switch tabs, create new tab, rename (double-click), maximize an image (double-click), navigate (holding spacebar), flip image, pick color, etc.Images will adjust responsively to the panel boundaries. It organizes the folder structure in the background while the user drops images inside the box, like the example aside.
The user doesn’t need to worry about organizing them on the system. They can also drag a folder inside the box, creating automatically a new tab with content already.User can close a tab without deleting references, or RMB and delete permanently the reference file or folder.
Quick Menu - Tools (hold “Q”)
In order to bring panels and tools closer to the focus area, another example using the neutral action "Move Tool" (V), the QM can offer as the primary access the following: "Tools", "Layers", "Tool Bar", among others.

Hilltop reacted to Mr. Doodlezz in Reddit: JOEY App Icon Evolution
Hey Affinity community!
Over the last few days I've been tinkering with an alternative app icon for JOEY, an Android client for Reddit.
I originally saw a post on Reddit where a user presented their attempt at an alternative symbol. I asked them if I could try my hand at it and refine it a bit and they agreed. These icons are the result and they were quite happy with the outcome. (Please click the preview for more details.)
Any constructive criticism is welcome!

Hilltop reacted to johndmoulton in New to Digital Art ... and loving it!
Hi All. I'll be 76y/o in a few weeks (April 2023), so no spring chicken! Art has always been a self-schooled, serious hobby for me, working with colour pencils, water colour, water colour airbrush and oils. I have been comfortable doing fairly basic photo manipulation in PhotoShop for years, but dumped them for Affinity when they went subscription - and don't miss them one bit!
So ... I thought, Why not give digital art a go with this wonderful new suite! Eighteen months in and - from absolutely nowhere - I have illustrated three children's picture books for two different authors. All have been granted Mom's Choice Awards, Honouring Excellence on all three and I'm working on a fourth as I write. I love working digitally. I'm a huge fan of illustrations by Beatrix Potter and I like to think my work is in that vein with a modern twist.
I have attached a few favourites here. All created entirely in Affinity Photo ... Enjoy!

One that's fairly local to me, I got rid of some bits like the ugly modern lamp post. I was going to add more people but most said not to, so I didn't.

Hilltop reacted to VectorVonDoom in Thunderbird 1
Based on a studio model used for one the Thunderbird comics. I changed the back wall to be head on, I thought it would look neater being a little more simple. Yeah I know the wings wouldn't normally be extended but they are as it looks better, perhaps it's being spring cleaned or something!

Hilltop reacted to VectorVonDoom in Futurist style, https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/176510-futurist-style-or-thereabouts/&do=getLastCommentor thereabouts.
my last post. I’m posting on instagram (yuk) and twitter (2 followers so Elon will be getting worried!) if you can find me! Also in the private Facebook Affinity Designer group (the biggest one).
Two quick ones. Did the astronaut then he had to have some transport. The rocket is a bit closer to futurist I guess. Rocket one needs a tweak or 10 but didn’t take too long.

Hilltop reacted to GarryP in 1950s-style ‘Creature Feature’ movie title still experiments
Here are some experiments, of varying quality, that I was playing around with at the weekend.
Apart from some (modified) background images everything was done in Designer and Photo.
They’re not what I would call ‘production ready’ but they’re okay as long as you don’t go looking for problems.
(Any resemblance to real movies or organisations is purely accidental.)

Hello Affinity fellows!
This is a car design I've done a while ago, using Affinity Designer 1.x.
I'm pretty excited about version 2, lots of workarounds on the timelapse will be done easily on version 2.
Hope you guys like the result ☺️
Thank you Affinity ❤️
P.S. If you like this kind of work, please, consider follow my YouTube channel 🙏, soon I’ll upload more content ☺️

Hilltop reacted to SonjaThompson in 3 tools I miss - a suggestion
There are 3 tools I miss from DrawPlus and CraftArtist, which I used often. I display them below. From reading some of the past posts about them, I think your users, myself included, would really love to have them back in some form. It's way faster and easier to do than even Ctrl-J for large grids and transformations, as shown in the Workbooks, and it's always nice to have more than one way to do things -- in this case, these tasks were simpler in DrawPlus than the newer Affinity. If our calculations were off for the end result we wanted, we knew right away and could Ctrl-Z, change the parameters, and try again.
The Replicate Tool:
The Transform Tool:
And finally the Blend Tool, which can transform one object to another in terms of shapes and figures, images, colors, transparency, etc. This one is a simple transparency transform for 100% to 20% with 3 steps between:
Thanks in advance for your careful consideration of my suggestion.

Hilltop reacted to walt.farrell in from MSIX to MSI
I think Preferences is better, because it lets you resynchronize any time you want, without having to uninstall/reinstall again. And without having to think about it every time you update to a new level of the Beta.

Hilltop reacted to Ash in More Options for Strokes & Dashes
Hi All - I'm pleased to say we have now added the ability to create balanced dashed lines and this is available to test in the latest beta. There are more details in the post below and it would be great if you wanted to try it out in the beta and let us know what you think - you can sign up to the beta program here.

Hilltop reacted to Ash in Dashed lines / stroke panel Improvements
Apps: All
Platforms: Windows, macOS and iPad
A few new features have been added to the stroke panel...
1. As has been commonly requested we have now added the ability to 'balance' dashed lines using a new toggle button on stroke panel. This means that the dash pattern is automatically rescaled between any cusps in a curve - making things such as corners of a rectangle or the start and end of a stroke look correct.
2. An additional dash and gap have now been added to build up more complex dashed line patterns (now giving you 3 dash and 3 gaps) making, among other things, two dot chain patterns possible. On desktop you can also click-drag the dash and gap indicator as shown to adjust the value.
3. A new button has been added to clear any arrowheads on a stroke - just making it more convenient than having to open the drop downs to set both ends to "None".

Hilltop reacted to jkrm in File save folder location
This may seem trivial, but it drivest me nuts. When I go to save or export in Affinity Photo, the default save folder seems to be the one I last saved a file to, not the folder that the file I am working on was loaded from. This often results in having to dig through my folder hierarchy for the right one, or worse, accidentally saving to the wrong folder and needing to search for it later. If I save a file and then do an export, once again I need to go searching for the correct folder. Is there a preference that can change this? It seems to me that most software doesn’t work this way - files get saved to the folder from which they were opened.

Hilltop reacted to Ash in Migrate your release version content to beta
Apps: All
Platforms: Windows and macOS
For the convenience of Beta testers we have add an option in preferences to migrate all settings and content you have in your retail versions over the beta versions at anytime. You can find this under the beta menu of preferences.

Hilltop got a reaction from MC909 in from MSIX to MSI
Before uninstalling, I would backup the Workspaces folders. This is important if you customized the apps' various workspaces. These folders can be found here:
C:\Users\<USERNAME>\.affinity\Designer\2.0\Workspaces
C:\Users\<USERNAME>\.affinity\Photo\2.0\Workspaces
C:\Users\<USERNAME>\.affinity\Publisher\2.0\Workspaces
If you have customized assets, brushes etc., then also backup the 'C:\Users\<USERNAME>\.affinity\Common\2.0\user' folder. This might be a very large folder.
It's good practice to frequently backup all these folders anyway in case of a corruption or if you need to reinstall any of the apps due to a malfunction.
After re(installation), check if your customized settings and contents are still available in the apps. If not, close the app(s), copy and paste your backups into the above folders and restart the app(s).

Hilltop got a reaction from walt.farrell in from MSIX to MSI
Just a matter of safety first, Walt. Anyway, like I also said, backing up customized settings and contents is good practice. You never know when your files might get corrupted or when your system might crash.
