  1. I just updated Publisher to 2.1.0 and regret it a lot. It is crashing every view moments, I can't save the work, recovery file opening doesn't recover the work done before the crash and many tools and commands from V1 are missing or at different positions. This is really frustrating. After installing V2 on my Mac mini (Intel, 16 GB RAM) it crashed only a few times. The many crashes (everey few seconds) occured after using the duplicate command repeatedly with a vector object.

  2. Hello David  in Яuislip

With "Try creating a new document then do Document/Add Pages from File, Sometimes you can recover it, sometimes you can't. Good luck" you saved my life!

I had the same problem as some other users of Affinity publisher with a 200+ pages book that was almost finished and your tipp worked! Thank you very, very much!

You claim to be a professional and yet say Lr has seen no real improvement for years? Have you not noticed all the masking improvements, colour grading controls, performance boosts - the list goes on and on. You also seem confused by what is a raw developer/dam and what is a Ps or Affinity Photo type of product. Yes raw developers just concentrate on raw development, as does Lr and C1. Heavy manipulation is done by the likes of Ps/AP.

    Hello ColinG,

did you had a look at the date I wrote the comment? It’s from mid 2019! There were no big masking improvements, improved grading tools and so on. They all are brand new. A performance boost was more than necessary after LR slowed down from 5.7 to 6.0 extremely. To get back some performance is not just a great improvement, I think. It's just cleaning up older programming mistakes. Also the map feature in my 5.7 version has been switched off for years now due to license reasons between Adobe and the map owner. But I payed for it without a limitation in time for using it in the future. Where are the improvements in the book, slideshow and web module? And please, don’t mention the new web galleries that are replacing the hated flash galleries!

And yes, I am quite aware about the difference between a DAM or RAW developer and a layer based photo editing tool like Affinity Photo or Adobe Photoshop.

  4. Hello thomaso,

thank you for asking. Yes, I am sure, I am working with the final version 1.9.2 of Publisher. Since the 1.9.x version I got more crashes than in former versions in general but the problem with the export of PDF files is obvious. After a hint in this forum I’ve downloaded the beta 1.9.2.1024 and everything was fine.

Another sort of crashes that I can repeat happens also when opening a few bigger files like books I am designing with 100 - 300 pages each. This happens in the 1.9.2 and also in the beta 1024 and is very disturbing in my workflow.

I am working on a Mac mini from end of 2014 with MacOS 10.15.6 and 16 GB of RAM and about 900 GB of free disk space. Even restarting the computer or stopping any other running program didn’t help.

  5. Hi,

I am very happy to use Affinity Publisher for my various book projects and created already some books about photography (www.warkentin-newmedia.de) with Publisher. However, I am missing a function with sections. It is great to use section names in text boxes and master pages. What I am missing is the possibility to use section numbers in the same way. An example: If sections would be numbered automatically by Publisher I could set them on title pages like "1. Sectiontitle", "2. Sectiontitle" and so on. But more important for books like tutorials or technical manuals is the functionality to create multi-part-pagenumbers like page number 01.17 for page 17 of section number 1 or page 7.23 for page 23 of section number 7. Up to now it is necessary to create multiple master pages and add section numbers manually as a workaround. This is not only annoying but also frustrating if an additional section/chapter has to be included in the middle of the book. I hope to see this helpful tool soon …   ;-)

  6. Hello,

after intensive using of Publisher I found a realy strange behaviour: whenever I export a file like JPEG, PDF, PNG the exported file is been opened within a separete programm like Photoshop, Adobe Reader or  Preview. Can it be switched of or is this a bug?

However, Publisher is a great product and I am very happy to work with.

  7. Hello,

I am just creating the master pages and paragraph styles of a book, that I have produced in Indesign and imported via a PDF file. When ever I try to create a paragraph style for the pagination with the alignment "towards binding" (sorry, I don’t know the exact term in English, in German it’s called "Zum Rücken hin"), Publisher 1.7.1 is crashing. I hope, you’ll find a fast solution!

    Thanks a lot in advance

Hello team! Sorry, I placed it twice here by mistake! Please delete this entry. Thank you!

  9. @Blende21: Thanks for your tipp! I've used GraphicConverter already about 30 years ago for format conversions but don’t use it anymore.  So I downloaded again the actual version and gave it a try. But by far it is not comparable with Lightroom when it comes to the management and organisation of 100.000 photos or more. It is just a file browser, not a database like LR. Also RAW development, retouching etc. is far behind LR and GC is extremly slow. I know, many poeple don’t know much about the huge capabilities of the Library module in LR but for me it is a unique tool I don’t want to miss. However, I would like to change from LR to a LR killer better today than tomorrow because of Adobes terrible pricing and marketing strategy.

  10. … maybe you are right, but I am working/producing now with Publisher and a font converter gets me two birds with one shot. I also get the fonts for the web as I want them. What I like at TransType4 is the fact that it keeps or creates typographic families together. Not all tools do that.

  11. Hello Thomaso,

I just got the program "TransType 4" and converted some of my problem-fonts to TTF-format, installed them and exported the document from Publisher 1.7.1 to PDF-X4, and voilá it does work! It costs 97,- $ and is available at "www.fontlab.com". For the first 7 free trial days the program converts the fonts without limitations and no costs. It also creates fonts for web use. This makes it especially interesting for me and my homepages.  ;)

  12. Hello kedmans,

what I've seen sometimes and sounds similar to your problems is related to short memory problems. If you have open many apps or the open ones use a lot of RAM Publisher might become extremely slow. Thus it looks like it crashed but the system monitor (Aktivitätsanzeige in german) shows that the software is just busy. Close other applications or just wait for a few minutes!

  13. Hello,

I am wondering there are not more comments/requests for this project. Me as a professional photographer and photography teacher is really unlucky with the Lightroom situation now. I don’t want to spend $ and $ just to see, that Lightroom gets no real improvement since years. I still use LR 5.7 and hope a lot that Serif created some replacement to LR before my old version is not accepted by hardware or systemsoftware anymore.

Of course there are some so called alternatives for LR on the market, but all of them just concentrate on RAW developement and a lot of effects for spectacular images. But no one cares about the library function to organize and manage a hundred thousand photos or more. And for shure I know a lot of other photographers having the same problem. The Affinity apps are so well designed, have an amazing look and feel in UI and are running very fast even on 10 year old machines so I don’t want to miss them and would be extremly happy if I could throw LR in the bin because I got your "Affinity Organizer"!

    Best wishes from Germany

  14. Hello Thomaso,

thank you for welcoming me here and thanks a lot for your tipp!

I've tried it and yes, it works! Of course, it was hard for me as a photographer and designer to switch all my well designed typo to Arial. But however, it solved the problem. Since the fonts in question are working on various systems in many applications, even in a famous layout program, it made no sense to me. The point, that PDF 1.7 does work and PDF X4 does not work with the same fonts is also hard to understand.   ;-)

Therefore I tested somewhat more and it seems clear for me, that Affinity Publisher does not accept the old Postscript (PS)-Fonts in it's documents. I tried various vendors of different fonts and the result is, that even high quality PS-fonts from Adobe don’t work. On the other hand TTF- or OTF-Fonts with incomplete character sets don’t make any problems in Publisher. Since the PS-Fonts are not damaged it just might be an incompatibility. The solution: buying a font converter that costs a lot more than publisher.   :-(

Again, thanks for your help and best wishes from Black forrest area

  15. Hi,

first of all a great "Thank you very much ,for this fantastic software!". It's long ago that I was so much amazed by an app like I did with Publisher Beta and the final version. You all did a great job. The days of using software that I have to rent are counted.

But I am sorry to say, I found an importatnt issue that keeps me from using Publisher 1.7.1 on Mac for production work: After creating something that has to be printed in a printing house I tried to create an X4 PDF, but without luck. I always get the message about an export error (without any specifications). I tried various settings and found this: My documet is made in RGB modus, even the photos are in RGB. Since PDF X4 is CMYK I selected CMYK colorspace and switched on the converting option also for photos. Whatever I try, the software stops with the same error. If I use PDF 1.7 which is an RGB PDF, then everything works fine. But my printing house of course wants CMYK. Is this a bug or did I do something wrong? What can I do? Is there any help?

    Thanks a lot in advance
