You got good value, some of us have only had V2 for a few months.

If ‘forever’ finished 3 months after my purchase it should either have been refunded, or the tie-in removed from a company I would never have given my money to.

that was a bit insensitive on my part.

i never meant to suggest that 'i got mine'.  it is an attitude i do not believe in.  i am sorry for my suggestion.

So far, their promise for perpetual is still holding. It will only fail if (a) Canva decides not to honor it or (b) the entire company fails.

There is still plenty of time to resolve the issue.

    that's a good point.

it could be said forever ended when Affinity did.

i agree, time will tell.  noted above Canva maintaining sub-free Affinity products seems the best bet.

i got way (way way) more than $99 value from the suite.  i would greatly miss it were the situation to change but, for me, this is not-at-all hill i choose to fight any harder to keep.

mergers happen.  i got much value.

We need to have these callbacks and online registration removed ASAP. Serif have had our money, twice, and a seriously large wad from Canva. It’s the least they can do to show appreciation to their loyal customers, and give us some peace of mind for the future (as if we haven’t got enough to worry about already).

I didn’t buy V1 and V2 from Canva, and I don’t appreciate relying on them for future access to my purchases.

i think a lot of folks might agree with you here, in principle.  I haven't read it but am guessing the EULA covers Affinity regarding server verifications.  it is their IP, we just bought a license to use it, not own it.

that said, given that even Adobe made good on a credentialing faux pas, should Canva go the sub route, i would be surprised and disappointed if they closed the doors on current users of V1 and V2.  Migration to a sub model is also not acceptable for me.  I would even consider buying them again if it meant no server check-in, no sub, just to keep what I have, which has been more than enough for a few years.

it's good to note that Canva came out a few days back with a more solid statement of intent.  And, at this point, is our best bet (see my post above on scribus).

They certainly "check-in" when you first run them on a new machine.

And on an existing machine, if you ever tell the applications to deactivate the license, they'll need to check-in again. Also, the first time you run the application with a new user account, if you have multiple user accounts on the machine.

And there may be additional times; I'm not sure Serif have documented all of the things that can cause it.

Note: This is for Personal accounts; Business and Education have different considerations that I don't have information for. And I've only tested the information I've provided on Windows.

    Thanks Walt.  Good info.

Recent comms from Canva/Affinity have also been more concrete and in a positive direction.

I do recall the infamous Adobe server issue.  A good example of how to fix a problem and maintain good relations with customers.

I had a hot minute where i was trying to arrange backup tools for the suite.  My favorite, Publisher, has no practical counterpart in the budget price field.

for anyone reading this 'later', scribus 1.6 offers many updates but the UI is very slow on a 2017 Xeon/64GB dell 5810 workstation.  its drawing capabilities were not where i needed them (lines with pressure sensitivity) and years between major updates is a bit of a bummer.  for DTP, scribus represents the other side of the fine line between Affinity and free.

  5. What it says on the tin.

Do we have a perpetual license; in the sense that if Affinity 'goes away', can we continue to use the software we paid for as long as it remains compatible with the OS?

Considering Canva also bought Pixaby and Pexels, and those properties are functioning, afaik, with even more offerings than prior, I am not as concerned.  I just want to know.

  6. Not to pile on, but.  As someone who's lost many hours to AP v2 crashes, in front of a client, all I can add is, I feel your pain and you're not alone.

I didn't post then, bc of deadlines.  I can add a bit now, but not as much as may be needed.

AP crashes for me in more than one file.

When it did, 'what i was doing', does not appear to have a common cause.  The crash behavior was initially, the app hung for about 30 seconds first.  Afterward, crashes were ~5 seconds on open.  Performing a quick save as sometimes gave me a usable again file, not always.

In one case, I did check into the resource manager and replaced quite a few embedded files.  Work seemed to be normal.

Another time, there were no embedded files but the file still crashed.

Another time, i read the log and thought maybe a Calibri file was erroring.  The file wouldn't even export to PDF. I thought it was a Word imported style sheet, which I rebuilt the 11 styles from scratch, in a clean file.  It crashed.  No idea why.

From some forums, the idea seems to be user error.  That may be.  For me, I can say, AP 1.x did not crash nearly as often.  Not nearly.

I know Serif is a smaller developer.  Limited resources, I get that.  But, instead of sending me the 50% off marketing promotion today, I would like instead for all of the 3 titles to allow me to mark 'F4' as a Layers... shortcut key, an omission that has been know more than long enough to either fix or make comment.  Additionally, I would like AP to again be a tool in which I am not afraid to place client work.  And as a tiny aside, when I don't update to from 2.03 to version 2.04, don't do it for me.

Downvote, boo the post.  Everything I say here, I've read on other posts.  I don't care. There was a big rush to buy v2 before the discount expired, which I did.  I supported Serif.  Today, when I received the 50% marketing email, but still don't have a reliable piece of software, I feel more than a little burned in the transaction.

  7. I was looking to post my experience and found your message. Problem is repeatable and constant.

Here is what I can add:

    1. ver: 1.8.0.584
    2. On a Windows 10 VM client. Host is Mac Mini, Catalina 10.15.3
    3. delete Master, screen freezes. No menus or controls respond.
    4. Other than deleting Master, no other action needed to trigger freeze.
    5. When screen is locked, can save work if right-click and close from task bar. Windows prompts for a save.

As I was typing my response here, I tried something that appears to correct the problem. Perhaps it may help you.

I had a graphic on my Master pasteboard. I recall graphics being a problem from other threads during beta, so i deleted it. Now, the pub responds, no freeze and work can be saved. The screen is responsive.

    hth.

  8. First, I only recently discovered Affinity products. Big fan.

After i started this post, i realized there are two errors. Both relate to a pasted image from another program.

There are 3 images in the problem description.

    1. Image 1: is a cybersecurity image copy/paste from paint.net
    2. image 2: placed image of a micrometer squeezing coins, from local directory
    3. image 3: re-pasted image 1, from paint.net

I am using beta 1.7.0.384. I looked for a similar report, but did not find one.

    What i did:

    1. Copied/pasted a screenshot from paint.net (image 1) onto a Publisher Master Page (left), new document.
    2. One text frame on each of two Master pages.
    3. Added text to actual pages, about 50 pages of Lorem Ipsum to learn text auto flow.
    4. From Master, adjusted text wrap of image 1.
    5. Placed a second, different image 2, on Master Page. Adjusted text wrap. Updates reflect correctly in thumbs and actual pages.

    What broke:

    1. Adjusting text wrap or moving the pasted image 1 did not update in thumbnail preview or actual pages.
    2. Image 1 cannot be removed from the actual pages.

    Second error:

    1. Pasted again image 1 (now image 3 ) onto Master. It was moved off the page to the pasteboard area (at nine o'clock). From Master, 'select all' will outline its position.
    2. Deleting image 3, then saving the file will crash the program.
    3. Image 3 remains in the file.

How i tried to fix it:

    1. Deleted image 1 from Master. Thumbnails/actual pages did not reflect update.
    2. Saved/reopened the file. Image 1 is no longer on Master. However, image 1 is on all actual pages. Cannot remove.
    3. Delete image 3.
    4. Save file crashes program.
