  1. Hi robertpastrana,

I also think it has something to do with which layer is active.

They appear to relate to the bounding boxes of each square object.

I'm not at my Mac to illustrate what I mean but I'm sure that someone else will have a better explanation.

I guess the main point is that if the lines do not print or appear in an exported PDF, then it's nothing to really worry about.

    Paul.

  2. Hello,

reading your talk, it seems that AD is mainly design for digital uses. What about the print?

Eps is still very important format in print because it's the main format to import vector files in Indesign or Quark Xpress.

It's also a main way to exchange with people working with Illustrator. Our illustrations created with AD must be usable by others graphic designer.

SVG is not a solution because it convert colors in RVB. PSD is not a vector app. Even PDF make changes in illustrations (cmyk colors are modified, transparencies are transformed...)

See the file attached: a very simple illustration. I'm unable to export it correctly as an eps file. The transparencies disappear or the shapes become bitmap. The texts become courbs and are not editable anymore.

Is there a good method to export in eps and keep the illustration safe?

    Hi caum,

I am from a Pre-Press/Graphic design background for print & packaging.

At work, I use InDesign for page layout, Illustrator for vector drawing & Photoshop for image editing.

It's been a very long time since I placed EPS files into a working document, my favoured workflow includes links that are a mix of any or all .ai, .pdf & .psd format — InDesign supports the transparency that is used in those file formats & allows for making some of the files' layers invisible or visible when placed, regardless of the linked files' own layers visibility settings.

As a result, I have not had the need for EPS files, either vector or raster, in a very long time.

On the occasion that I have to download a stock vector EPS, I usually find that it has a white background that needs to be deleted & is RGB, so I end up correcting the file & saving it as a .ai or .pdf file to be used as my linked file in InDesign.

    Paul.  ;)

  3. Now you have me.  I do not see an option as to how to do this.  I have seen a statement in the forum saying that it happens by default but that was almost a year ago so do not know what it does now. https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/tags/forums/flattened%2Btext/

    Hi Richard,

As I said, I used the Beta.

  4. Hi Richard,

    1. I've reduced your original file to 25% of the original size at 300 dpi.

    2. I used the Customer Beta of Affinity Designer (1.3.5.2) for this exercise, it runs alongside the Mac App Store version without interference.

    3. I exported the file to a flattened eps file & opened it in Inkscape to verify that it imports OK into another app.

Affinity Designer file & exported eps attached.

    Cheers,

    Paul.

  5. I am trying to print a large banner 37 feet by 4 feet.  I can create the canvas and then place all of the content onto the canvas and save the document as an afdesign file.  But every time that I try and export any output I get the "boing" sound indicating an error of some type and I am unable to export anything in any form, bitmapped or vector.  I have no bitmapped content and no effects for which bitmapping might be applied. If the output size is less than 12 inches then I can export but anything over a relatively small paper size refuses to process.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi rap2000us,

Are you using the Mac App Store, 1.3.5 version or the Beta, 1.3.5.2 version?

I have both & I am experiencing problems with your file.

I have two questions for you, is it necessary to have a transparent background & is it necessary to have 'placed' (embedded) files on each layer?

I am still experimenting with your file, also.

    Paul.  :)

  6. Thanks, Leigh, for the information … very appreciated. :)

But as far as I can tell, all raster brushes seem to be packed into one file then … so, if I replace my Affinity Designer brushes with the Affinity Photo brushes (i.e. by copying the raster_brushes.propcol file in the Finder), I will loose the first ones. Is that correct?

Perhaps it would be worth a feature request to have at least the brushes categories as single files …

    Hi Alex,

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but rather than using the raster_brushes.propcol file, have you checked the Brushes pane in  Pixel Persona for the imported brushes?

If they are not there, then the .ABR files can also be imported into AD & used in Pixel Persona.

    Paul.

  7. Hi tinyheero,

Affinity does not link files at all in the way Adobe or other apps do.

Placing the file embeds it instead (similar to Smart Objects in PS).

A placed PDF is not rasterised – to edit it's properties, you can double-click the placed image & it opens in a separate window.

If you place them or copy & paste from PDF files that you open in Affinity, the separate panels should be easy to arrange within the document as you see fit.

Please refer to the screen shots below to illustrate the difference between opening & then copy/pasting into your document vs placing into your document:

    Hope this helps.

    Paul.  ;)

  8. hello, I'm having a problem trying to open RAW images from my Mac Photos app in Affinity Photo.. In my Photos app it shows as RAW files.. when i go to Affinity, Open file, it opens as JPEG? does anyone else have this issue? I can't seem figure out why? the only way Affinity opens RAW files is directly from SD card.. where do you guys store your RAW files to be opened in Affinity?

    Hi Mr.Furious,

In my production environment at work, I do not use iPhoto (Snow Leopard) to manage my production files.

On my own Mac, I follow a similar workflow as I do not use Photos to manage my media.

In my production environment, all the media for a job is moved to a production folder on the HD.

I follow a similar method at home, storing my working files on a combination of the main HD plus my external storage HD's.

Affinity has a Media Manager which I use, as well as simply using the File>Open… command to locate the RAW file(s) I need for a project.

Affinity's Media Manager can have extra folders added to it.

All RAW files open as RAW this way for me.

    Hope this helps.

    Paul.
