I've installed the required font and opened the attached .ai file - a business card layout. The layers containing name, address, etc. appear invisible. How can I correct this?
They appear fine in Mac OS X Preview.
Hi Michael,
I've opened your .ai file in AD on my mac at home.
It's as I suspected, but was unable to confirm earlier that it has to do with the text (& drawn symbols) being in a Pantone® colour - so the text was always there, just not visible!
Affinity will support Pantone® colours in the future, according to the Feature Road Map.
Affinity appears to default the unknown colour to paper white - screen shot:
I have attached an edited AD file, with the Pantone® coloured objects recoloured with an arbitrarily chosen CMYK blue in my palette:
I hope this is a help to you.
Paul.

Hi Michael,
Welcome to the Affinity Forum.
I'm at my work Mac presently, so I don't have access to Affinity Designer right now.
I do have Adobe Creative Suite here & I noticed that your file uses a Pantone grey for the text, Affinity does not support Pantone or spot colours yet.
I have converted the Pantone colour to CMYK process colour, can you please check to see if the attached file opens with visible text this time?
Paul.

My question right now is how to compile multiple images into a layout for a website header. I created a new document as a web file with a transparent background. I created a new layer, opened my first image, and copy/pasted it into the document, but it pasted onto the background and not the new layer. So I can't move it, and I'm not sure how to put it onto a different layer and keep the background layer clear.
As a disclaimer: I'm trying to learn Affinity Photo without prior experience with Photoshop or any other similar editing program.
I would love any help someone can offer! Thanks so much! :-)
~ Stacey
Hi Stacey,
Welcome to the forum.
I'm more familiar with Photoshop & I'm stil learning Affinity Designer & Affinity Photo.
Have you checked out the Affinity video tutorials?
Here's one about layers in Affinity Designer, which may help: https://vimeo.com/112930018
Could you post your Photo file in a reply to me so I can get a better idea about what you want to do.
Pasting an object into the file will create its own layer for the object, this is similar to how Photoshop works.

Hi jackamus,
Unless I'm missing something in your question, I believe that selecting the node tool will do what you want?

I think I'm a 'flat icons' convert!
Both Betas' icon sets are much improved.
I also like the improved AD Beta ui.
Great work!

I'm new to Affinity Designer and was using it today to get familiar. Somewhere along the line, the panel that normally displays on the right side, disappeared. I don't see anyway to bring it back. The top toolbar and tools panel displays fine but panel that was on the right is gone. How do I bring it back?
Thanks for any help.
Hi kentbigdog,
Welcome to the forum.
Just click the View menu & make sure Layers is checked, please see attached screen shot.

Hi all,
I'm using CMYK colors for a logo but still need to export it to JPEG with sRGB from time to time to let the client see the work in progress. My "problem" is that when using the shortcut to export the whole document, the popup window doesn't have any possibility to convert the ICC profile for the export (like in the screenshot, BTW I love it's design). But if we use slices on the Personna tab there is this option. So is it possible to have "File > Export ..." to have this option too ? Or should I avoid using it and always goes to "Export Personna"...
Thanks
Hi Mushr00m,
The Export Persona is definitely the best way to export to another colour profile, other than your default profile.
I've included a screen shot of my profile versus the export profile chosen.
Regards,
Paul.

Maybe a temporary work around would be to export the finished AD file to PDF & then print from Adobe Reader (or Acrobat Pro if you have it)?

Hi ShagStudio,
I'm not sure what print process you are designing for, so I have made several changes to the set up.
1. I Changed RVB (RGB) to CMJN (CMYK), for CMJN I assumed that the profile is for U.S. Sheetfed Coated in your region.
2. I Changed the resolution to 300 dpi & halved the document size (if the printer needs to print at your original size, he will have to enlarge it to 200%, this will not be a problem as it is all vector). This size change means it opens in Adobe Reader without problems.
3. I am using metric measurments, because that is what I'm used to – You are welcome to revert it to inches, if you wish. :)
I've attached my PDF & the altered AD file with a screen shot of the set up, which also has the same CMJN values applied to all the black objects (I noticed a mis-match in the owl logo etc.).
I hope this helps.

Hi Rik,
Have you downloaded the latest Beta?
I haven't, but I believe it also uses the re-branded icon set.

Hi ShagStudio,
Sorry for the slow response.
I'm away from my Mac right now, I should be able to have a look in about 2 hours.
Kind regards,
Paul.

It's not a silly question.
The Beta releases are for testing prior to the next update on the App Store.

It would be great to get your feedback on our new branding for Affinity, All feedback welcome both positive and negative.
I'm not much of a fan of the trend towards 'flat' logos/icons.
That being said, it's the quality & functionality of the software that is more important to me, the functionality of iOS 8 with Yosemite & the expectations of El Capitan with iOS 9 are a case in point.

I want to use the OM symbol in one of my designs.
AD doesn't have "clip art" so to say. Where is the best place to get an OM symbol on the web? I feel like every free download site is a scam.
Also, once I get the om symbol i need the background to be transparent.
Advice?
Hi Fabers24,
I have this file as a vector (Affinity Designer) that you can edit how you like.
Cheers,
Paul.

on my first look at Affinity Photo Beta compared to PS, I miss the polygonal lasso tool.
Greetings Kurt
Hi Kurt,
Welcome to the forum,
I have found the 'Selection Brush' is a pretty good way to select an area in a similar way to the Magnetic Lasso Tool & the Lasso Tool can function in a similar way as the Polygonal Lasso Tool if you use the modifyier keys that Affinity shows you at the bottom left hand side of your application window.

Hi,
I try to send the original file but I don't know how :) (I try with my media and drag and drop...)

Thanks, Paul. You've made several changes there, including colour model, document units, and DPI. Do you know which of those changes was most crucial?
Hi Dave,
I'm not 100% certain, because I did not have access to the original Affinity Designer file.
I assumed that the PDF, when imported to AD, showed the original document set up.
The set up was for 'Device', but the type of device was not assigned - only the dimensions in pixels.
I thought it would be best to use a standard set up for 'Print - Press Ready', that is why I chose a CMYK colour space an ISO paper size.
It might have been enough to choose which device for the document set up, but it was easier for me to stick with something I'm familiar with - I'm a graphic designer with a pre-press background that goes back to the days of film, plates, Golden Rod, Mylar® & Rubylith.
I think it's also fair to say that whoever at his client's side was handling the PDF could have opened it in Adobe Illustrator & 'cleaned up' the file, then used it as an Illustrator file - all the vector data was still there!
Thanks,
Paul.

Hi ShagStudio,
I was able to import your PDF to Affinity Designer.
I believe that the problem was caused by the document set up used in your original Affinity Designer file (dimensions).
I've attached screen shots of the original document set up, plus my set up, along with the modified Affinity Designer file & a PDF exported from my AD file.
I hope this helps to resolve this issue for you.
Kind regards,
Paul.

Right! I missed the LaB factor. It's the default for Pantone palettes in CS6 and above.
Thanks for pointing that out, Dave.
