  1. I'm having similar issues. Log file attached and noticed this warning... Attempting to create Direct3D device on default adapter Setting screen DPI to 113.413953488372 (scale = 2.5) [OpenCL] Error -11 (485): Could not build program! 2. I have noticed that across different software my attached "limits" test file looks different. Usually the various software will crush the black so I have recorded my monitor brightness levels to view correctly in each program using the "Intel Graphics Command Centre" For example on my Dell XPS 15 brightness for the various software is set as follows... ACDSee Photo Studio Pro - 32 Affinity Photo - 34 SNS-HDR - 34 Chrome - 36 FSPViewer (360 Panos) - 32 It has made me realise that every combination will generate different results on different systems and different software and if sending out work to anybody to critically view to ask them to adjust so they can barely see the dark square on the left and white square on the right. Highlights are normally fine it's the Shadows that get impacted usually. May not be your issue but you reminded me of how sensitive different systems are to view consistantly. Good luck! Cheers Andrew
  3. Hello all I tested this when I first started using Affinity when it first came out and tested again today with same results. See the attached two files. I'm using Windows 10 latest Affinity release and using a Dell XPS 15 2 years old. BURN TOOL When used on a grey scale and set to "highlights" it seems to work quite well. Highlights are darkened heavily, middle tones a little bit and shadows hardly at all - PASS When used on the same grey scale set to "middle" it seems to adjust everything except the very white and black tones and I guess darkens the middle tones more but seems it's range is too much - FAIL When used on the same grey scale set to "shadows" it barely touches the darkest tones, darkens the lightest tones but seems to darken the tones at darker end of middle tones the most! - FAIL (this result is really weird to me) DODGE TOOL When used on a grey scale and set to "highlights" it seems to work quite well. Highlights are lightened the most, middle tones a little bit and shadows hardly at all - PASS When used on the same grey scale set to "middle" it seems to adjust everything except the very white and black tones and I guess darkens the middle tones more but seems it's range is too much again - FAIL When used on the same grey scale set to "shadows" it pretty much duplicates the "middle" setting! - FAIL (this result is also really weird to me) I have double tested these and same results both times. The results on the grey scales imitates what I have experienced on images. So is this just how the tool works? (and why?) or is this a bug and can you fix it Affinity? Many thanks Andrew Busst New Zealand
  4. Thanks both Chris and Michail hope it's something Affinity can sort. Cheers Bussty
  5. Hi Stokerg I have loaded it to dropbox now. Another thing the Refine preview also looks blurry in parts but sharp in the mask but again that doesn't show in the mask. Cheers Andrew
  6. I have been looking at ways to effectively mask things like trees and then adjust the background so you can increase contrast, gamma etc in the sky without affecting the foreground. I have tried Remask from Topaz which is pretty good but thought I would try Affinity which is my core image editor. MY METHOD Using the selection brush I make a loose selection of the sky around the trees I then invert the selection I then hit Refine Using the Matt brushes and foreground and background modes I then tidy up the selection so only the tree is selected Using a black background in the Refine tool the trees look pretty good (see attached) In fact a better result than I can achieve using Topaz Remask and faster. MY PROBLEM So now I have the really good selection I need to transfer that into my final image so I... Hit apply Now I have a selection of just the trees To test how good this is and recreate the result of using the black background in the Refine tool I convert the selection to a mask. In my mind this shoud duplicate the effect of the selection including transparency Then I load a pure black pixel layer beneath the masked layer The result is attached As you can see the selection as a mask appears quite a bit different from the refine preview window with lots of bleed coming through. Am I doing something wrong? Am I wrong to expect the mask to replicate the preview window in Refine? It seems if the preview can do it why can't I replicate in the final image? I really enjoyed selecting a tricky subject like this in Affinity and would really like to get this right. What am I doing wrong? or Is there a deficiency in Affinity? Many thanks Andrew Busst
  7. Thanks Chris, fingers crossed! If you look at work by Cole Thompson he lives by the Burn and Dodge tools and in particular how you can target just Highlights, Middle Tones or Shadows. AP would just not be an option for him with the current functionality. Cheers Andrew
  8. There is definitely something up with the Dodge and Burn Tools. The attached image shows a Grey Scale with 100% Opacity and Flow Dodge and Burn Brushes drawn horizontally as follows... Burn Highlight - Looks OK possibly burning more shadow detail than I would have thought Burn Middle Tones - Probably OK surprised it darkened the whole range Burn Shadows - Hmm seems to really burn middle tones more than anything! Then Dodge Highlight - OK Dodge Middle Tones - Probably OK again quite surprised it lightened the whole range Dodge Shadows - Something wrong here looks just like the middle tone dodge. Definitely looks like some work needs to be done here or am I missing something? Cheers Andrew
  9. Hi there I find it quite useful using a recolour layer and a really bright colour (like lime) to highlight specific selected areas using the Blend Options interface. My thinking is if I use the recolour layer to show my selection is there a way to copy that across to say a Curves or Levels layer so I know exactly what I'm adjusting? Look forward to any reply. Many thanks Andrew Busst
