Brush settings RMB + CTRL
eobet replied to Fantomasas's topic in Feedback for Affinity Photo V1 on Desktop
Hah, thanks. Again, it doesn't show up until you drag. Here's an interesting UI tidbit on this: The requirement that you begin a dragging motion, instead of just hover (resize) or click (picker) means that for the artist there's basically an extra input step and probably an extra quarter of a second he has to wait until he sees the results he wants to achieve. Doesn't sound much, but it adds up (both time, tediousness and annoyance) and it was the reason why I didn't even discover that these commands existed! Photoshop has streamlined this for a reason. -
The only option is "Affinity layers", but Photoshop still opens it as a single-layer document: Since I'm working in 32-bit as you can see, and the PSD export option didn't have a color depth option, I had to use the TIFF export. (The PSD export also was a bad result, since the masks were just filled with garbage noise... perhaps because I was using two masks per layer, which Photoshop doesn't support, but Affinity should know this and merge the masks to one, which would be an acceptable result.)

Ideally, this should be a modifier that can be used with a pen. Alt + right click + pen drag = Resize brush Alt + pen drag = Color picker Control + right click + pen drag = Rotate canvas view I'm sad that the Windows version of Affinity only has the 15 degree rotations from a menu, but it's at least better than nothing.

Brush settings RMB + CTRL

I understand finally! The super confusing thing with a pen is that you need to actually draw a stroke, at the same time as holding down the right-click and alt! That's essentially the equivalent of holding down the left and right mouse buttons at the same time, plus a third key, which is why it was so confusing to me. It works now, but it will still take time to get used to. EDIT: On a similar note, is there a color picker modifier shortcut? In Photoshop, it's Alt... -
Right now, brush stroke previews don't seem to update with added dynamic size or dynamic flow (only with jitter, for some reason, and the jitter looks very smooth). In Photoshop, the stroke preview tapers at the edges with dynamic size, and fades to transparent at the edges with dynamic flow. From a usability standpoint, right now it's difficult to see what effect your changes to these dynamics have, and a brush with dynamic flow is indistinguishable in the list from a brush without it, making it also difficult to select. EDIT: I now notice that you can set "jitter" to 100% and still get smooth strokes. That means that "jitter" isn't "randomize", but rather "strength". This is very confusing, so if this is correct, please rename "jitter" to "strength".

Say I have a curve consisting of 5 nodes. I select 2 of them in sequence and press copy. Now when I paste, I expect a line segment to be pasted... but no, the entire object the selection was a part of gets pasted. How do I copy and paste just the selected curve segment? Second question, what if I instead wanted to delete that curve segment? I can delete nodes, but the curve doesn't openup , it fills in instead.

How to do gradients on iPad vs desktop?
eobet replied to eobet's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on iPad Questions
Thank you! Wow, that was super unintuitive and I never would have figured it out without the video. Opacity on the gradient end points is apparently set to 0% by default, even though apparently my object was set to solid white before. That meant that even while watching the above video I initially wasn't able to figure it out until he mentioned the opacity slider. Why can't you click on the colored dot in the appearance tab on the iPad to get the popup where you are able to directly select a gradient? Would have been so much easier. -
How to do gradients on iPad vs desktop?
eobet replied to eobet's topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on iPad Questions
I seriously need a tutorial video or some documentation for this. I can’t figure it out. -
On desktop, I can just open appearance and change fill type to gradient. But on iPad I get no such menu. Even on the large main fill dot I can’t figure out how to switch to gradient. Even if I use the gradient tool, the fill type doesn’t seem to change. How do I do a gradient fill on iPad and why is there an UI inconsistency between the two versions?

I've posted a bug about this for the Windows 10 version, and then also the same question for iPad, but I just noticed that I don't know how to do it on MacOS either. In Windows, you just create a "new view" and then tear that tab off into its own window, resize, zoom and done, but in MacOS, you can't tear off the tab!

Erratic behavior when zoomed in + second view
eobet replied to eobet's topic in V1 Bugs found on Windows
Hello, and thank you for the reply! I couldn't actually recreate this in a new document. However, this is the file that has the issue, and I am able to recreate it even on a second machine running 1440p: https://www.dropbox.com/s/llbewi4ebqo0ak3/RhinoRandomColorIcon.afdesign?dl=0 (The video is low resolution due to my capture software only wanting to capture a part of my screen on that machine, which was 1080p.) -
Erratic behavior when zoomed in + second view
eobet replied to eobet's topic in V1 Bugs found on Windows
Can someone move this to the bug forums please, because I'm starting to think this is more a bug than something I did wrong... -
I had to search the internet to find out how to export with transparent background as well. That option is really well hidden. From a usability standpoint, the "default background" in a document has traditionally always been considered "transparent". The Export Persona is great, but it should really recognize that when you are exporting a file format that can handle transparency, the option should be front and center. EDIT: Also, this thread isn't the only one showing that many users are confused by this... here's just a few more I found... I just noticed that there's a second way to do it without the persona, but even that one is a bit convoluted:

I am designing a 24x24 pixel icon, and for optimal workflow I want a 1500-3000% zoomed window AND a 100% zoomed window. I was very happy that Affinity seems to support this, AND update both windows in real-time! Super well made, and absolutely awesome! However, the selection behavior suddenly becomes extremely strange an erratic. It actually seems as if the zoomed window has proportionally the selection size of the small window, in that I can click way off an object, and it will still get selected, and resizing handles will be active way, way outside of the highlighted object, and snapping (which I didn't think I had turned on) goes across great distances. Can anyone tell me if I'm doing something wrong or if this is a bug?

I would also like cryptomatte support. We're about to test a new open source cryptomatte plugin for Photoshop at work, so it can be done: https://www.exr-io.com/exr-io-2-00/

Affinity Designer desktop allows for adding ordering options to the top menu. But in the iPad you only have a confusingly similar "insertion targets" which looks the same but don't seem to do the same. It would be much friendlier to new users if ordering options were located at a similar position in both applications, and the top menu feels more logical than the transform menu on the lower right side. (At least allow iPad users to customize the top menu, perhaps, as you can on the desktop.)

Brush settings RMB + CTRL

I am also missing these shortcuts in the status bar at the bottom of the window. None of what either of you are saying works to resize the brush (same for the clone tool). This has worked since CS4 or earlier, and I honestly don't think I can go back to not using it...
