  1. I heavily need this feature for book interior formatting. Can you please try to implement a feature to import/export the content of a text frame (or all of them) into an html document. It just needs to export the text as is with assigning html tags to each paragraph/character style. For example: Paragraph style: title > <h1 class="title"> Paragraph style: Chapter title → <h1> Paragraph style: Sub-chapter → <h2> Paragraph style: Body-text → <p> Paragraph style: 1st-paragraph → <p class="1st-p"> Character style: emphasis → <emphasis> Character style: list-item-title → <span = class"l-i-t"> And also to ability to ignore certain styles is useful. Like: Paragraph style: page-number → ignore Paragraph style: Header → ignore If you can implement exporting, I think importing HTML is also possible which is equally important. Many writers will want to reedit some of the text before publishing once or twice. Having HTML as the base ground will ease the work because all styles, and hence formatting are saved independently. We can't really work with word since it's a mess to export to HTML and most authors will apply local editing instead of using paragraph/character styles. BTW, copy-pasting the text from publisher to any word processor will remove all formatting and extra lines between the paragraphs. Nowadays, almost all writers publish for the web and print-on-demand. Since Affinity Publisher doesn't support export/support to ePub or html, we have to format the book twice. Which is so annoying and time consuming, especially for revisiting. You can also try to export to import/export the style properties to and from CSS. It will be helpful for the authors who can't work with HTML. I'm not sure, but in my opinion, this should be a fairly easy task. It's just remapping the styles to the specific tags, and if you guys can do it with Microsoft word, I don't see why you can't do it with HTML which has a simpler code. Unless you are waiting to release this for the 2.? version of the software to give the users enough reason to update. At least implement it by then.
  2. @loyukfai People speaking different languages have expressed the desire to use Affinity products with their non latin languages over and over again. Especially right to left languages like Arabic and Hebrew. The problem is that Affinity needs a text shaping engine for complex languages, currently there are 3 main ones: core text from apple, uniscribe/directwrite from microsoft and harfbuzz (open source but mainly managed by google). As you can see, it's not a simple task and only the biggest tech companies in the world Apple/Microsoft/Google that create operating systems have the ability to create such complex systems. Unfortunately Serif has a small team and they can't in anyway create a fully operational text shaping engine for the many languages of the world in the near or far future. We have advised them to use HarfBuzz since it's ready and open source but they refused to. Even more, one of their stuff directly expressed that they don't want to use any third party app for the text engine, but they can't develop one too and it'll require a lot of time, so they dropped it from their to do list altogether to work on other things. They want to focus on Latin scripts only. And to be honest I don't know what to say or do after that statement.
  3. I know you can that, I mentioned it in my article, but it gets really annoying if you have to do it a couple of hundreds of times in a document.
  4. First, let me explain the difference between the "layer" function in designer/publisher, and the "group layer" function in photo – Designer/Publisher "layers" which have the subname (layer) in them, work as a grouping layer, but the advantage is each time you click on a sub-layer inside them from the canvas, you only select that sub-layer. – Photo doesn't have a way to create this same "layer" in it, it has a "group" layer that can be creating when selecting one or two layers, and it works as the name says by grouping them. The problem "group layer" is whenever you click on a layer on the canvas, it select the whole group, then you have to double click or control+left click the sub-layer, it usually never works if I have multiple stacked layers with transparencies, the other solution is to select them from the layer panel directly. This still adds extra unnecessary steps, especially if you need to fine tune some layers a lot. I can go to file > Edit in Designer..., create one "layer" and go to file > Edit in Photo... And this has become the 1st step in every file I create in photo, and it's really annoying and time wasting if I have to do it multiple times a day. The other work around is to add one "layer" after I create it in designer to the assets panel, but I had problems with some sub-layers position changing and disappearing, especially text and curves. The "Group Layers" icon at the bottom is redundant, because you can group layers with Control+G. The normal "layer" function would be of better use.
  5. Hold Alt+LMB+RMB and drag. This should work fine. The exact way way is to hald alt+rmb then hold lmb and you can release the rmb after. For ease of mind I keep pressing all of them. I don't know how well this will work with drawing tablets.
  6. It's not available yet. The best you can do is to create different sections and put a variable based on the section names.
  7. I can't believe this is no where to be found in the official help. I click on: alt + (lmb+rmb at the same time) and it gives me good and easy control. I don't have to click on rmb first then lmb. But I still prefer using alt+rmb only. For tablet users, try holding alt+rmb then press the pen and drag. This might work.
  8. To edit the size of 1 page: While the "move tool" is selected, click on "Spread Setup..." on the toolbar, then select "Current Spread" or "Selected Spreads" and adjust the size as you want. In the scaling tab, you can control the behaviour of the scaling. You should ask if something can be done first before complaining that it doesn't. To control the size of the exported PDF, On the export panel, click on "More..." Then you want to Enable Downsample images above 300 DPI, and Allow JPEG compression. Put in mind that Pubilsher is not and never meant to be a PDF editor, at exporting, it'll reprocess all of the PDF's text and images, modified or not. A PDF editor, like acrobat, will change only the modified pages/images/text and will leave everything else intact. That's the type of software you should use for this type of tasks. u
  9. This is actually quite problematic. I exported the pages without crop marks, and here is the result: the pdf file has a bleed on the 4 edges, it's white on the inside of the verso page, and it has the image on the inner side of the recto page.
  10. I placed an image inside a frame. It did not appear in the trim area of the exported page, but it leaks inside the bleed.
  11. They should add running head variables that are based on paragraph/character styles.
  12. Put the image inside a frame, or convert it into one if you placed it directly. Then scale the frame from the gutter to the outer bleed. I think this should solve your problem.
  13. @adreamer In the chapter master page, I have page numbers (copied from body master page), and the image below the chapter title. This can change the pages' order, so you can't just select all of them then "apply master page", by adding a space after, you make sure the image will fall on an empty space and it won't push any text further. There are many ways to do it. I just find that detaches the original master page, or consists adding the image to 1 page each time, is not practical in the case where you'll need to replace the image, transform it, or changes the pages' order, can ruin everything and you'll need to correct it on all pages again and again. So I prefer to apply the chapter master page to chapter 1 to see how it'll look like, then apply it to the other pages at the last step to avoid any problems.
  14. I also need this effect done. Here what I do: - I put put the first text frame on page 1 and autoflow the text. It's not part of the master page. - I set the chapter title/heading to start on new/odd page with space after/before. - I create a new master page with the appropriate image placement. - I format the whole book first, usually at the last step before exporting, I apply the master page to the chapters so I don't have any problems if pages change order. - To select them faster, I open the find/replace panel and the pages panel next to each other. In the find/replace panel I search for chapter paragraph style, I select the results one by one and each time the corresponding page is shown the bottom of the page panel, I Ctrl+left mouse click to select them all, the on one of them, right mouse click => apply master page... If done correctly, this can take like 1 minute for 10 chapters. This is the fastest method I can think of that'll allow you to change the object or it's size. I have made a request to automatically apply a certain master page when a certain paragraph style is present on a page.
  15. I got that number from their LinkedIn page. There is an open source complex text engine called HarfBuzz, Google pushed it's development and it's the one that renders Arabic, Hindi text... In chrome, android, PS4, Linux, LibreOffice, Scribes... I think using it is better than re-inventing the wheel.
  16. The software is less than 1 year old. They added a lot of features form the first beta till now, they'll work on adding more features by the time, you just need to be aware if the tools you need now are present now or not yet.
  17. They have only 67 employees, and they didn't even do it with the serif plus lineup, so they have no expertise in this matter. I hope that they consider using 3rd party tools like Harfbuzz, it can provide a faster solution.
  18. That's a quote from an official moderator. It's not that they don't wanna implement it at all, they won't won't work on it in the short and medium time.
  19. They don't have a text shaping engine for complex text as of now, actually they never had. And with their luck of expertise in the matter and unwilling to prioritize it, I guess we'll have to wait for 3-5 years.I Inthe meanwhile, you can use 3rd party apps and websites like "tadween" you write the Arabic text and it shifts the direction and uses the correct glyph for the letter position. This works with one line text only, for multi-line text like books, this won't work. What amazes me is that serif is a small company, they have no experience in developing text shaping engines for CTL, and such task requires a long time. They can use the open source HarfBuzz, Windows Unitext, or MacOs core text shaping engines as a solution, but the problem is that they're unwilling to.
  20. I think you can create a bullet paragraph style. Then create a character style with bigger size and apply it to the bullet.
  21. You can create printed books and covers in Publisher. If your book covers need heavy image compositing, it's better to use Affinity photo. There are some missing features that can be needed in some books, like footnotes/endnotes, running head based on paragraph/character styles, tables spanning through pages, support for rtl languages and vertical typography for CJK text. So put that in mind if you need any of them.
  22. What's even better, is adding a special characters panel like in "Sigil", it gives you a visual representation of them, and you insert them by a single click.
  23. Check fontbase software, it's free and it allows to activate/deactivate fonts from different folders without having to install them. They work fine with Affinity software.
  24. People ask to create software for all creative needs, DAM, video editing, VFX, animation... They have limited men power for all of that, and to update the current trio. I think their next software is a DAM (like Lightroom), they made a poll about it and their CEO said they they were experimenting creating such software. Since all apps share the same base code, I can see an animation software can be next after the DAM, since they already have a good base for it. But you'll have to wait 2-3 years for that at least.
