78deluxe got a reaction from Jenna Appleseed in Artificial Inteligence
There are many monotonus tasks that AI can speed up the workflow so you can spend more time on the more creative aspects of a project.
Single click selection of a subject for example.  This uses AI to accomplish.  Do you really feel that spending an hour on an extremely complicated selection and refinement process is time well spent, when it could be done in a single click?  Does it take away artistic merit of your final image if you made the selection manually or of the computer assisted in the process?
AI as individual adjustable tools are fine with me.
That said, I think Affinity needs to focus on adding to the core of the product (and make sure to squash any bugs along with way for stability), but AI in different capacities is here to stay and I expect it to continue to improve and provide addiitonal value to people that do not have unlimited time.

It isn't anywhere close to what some other "AI" driven options can provide today (let alone tomorrow).  But yes, I'm aware of the Selection brush tool that was developed with some context aware parimeters working in the background.

    Installation of Software and Updates
If you’ve purchased from the Affinity Store— each time you start the software it will check for updates and offer to download and install any available update. For the macOS release, in the application main menu there is an option "Check for Updates". Alternatively, you can download the latest installer by logging into the affinity store here and find the order in your account and use the "download" button in there. Updates are installed automatically (or manually by installing the new version over the old) Previous builds do not need uninstalling first. New installations of paid software downloaded from the Affinity Store requires a product key and email pair to use.
Software downloaded from the Mac App Store, Microsoft Store and iPad store do not require a product key and are updated through the relevant store:
If you’ve purchased from the Mac App Store— updates are done automatically next time you run your software after it is available in the Mac App Store. However, you do need to be logged in with the same Apple ID you used to buy them. If this does not happen for you, open the Mac App Store app and go to the Updates page and then Store > Reload page or press CMD+R. This should hopefully force the update to show. Apple sometimes phase roll outs around the world which can mean it may take up to 72 hours for your update to be available.
If you’ve purchased from the Microsoft Store— Microsoft Store updates are done automatically by the operating system (each time you start the application). If this does not happen for you, open the Windows Store app and click the three dots in the top right corner of the app and then go to Downloads and Updates. Click Get Updates. This should hopefully force the update to show.
If you’ve purchased from the Pad Store— Your Affinity iPad apps should update automatically next time you run them. However, you do need to be logged in with the same Apple ID you used to buy them. If the automatic update does not happen for you, go to the iPad Store app and go to Updates. Once you’re there, tap near the top of the screen where it states 'Updates' and then hold, pull down and then release. This should manually refresh the updates page. However, don’t contact us if the updates are not available for you yet—Apple sometimes phase roll outs around the world and this can take up to 24 hours.

78deluxe got a reaction from garrettm30 in [Poll] Do you need a DAM? And what should it be like?
Capture One is the market leader in this space, not Lightroom.  I'd love to see Affinity take on that challenge.

RAW processing in the develop persona is one of the few weaknesses in the suite of programs.  Developing a DAM with RAW processing, color control and teathering on the level of Capture One would be remarkable.
While I own Capture One, Lightroom, On1 RAW, Darktable, ACDsee I'd prefer to stay in the Affinity echosystem.  Capture One has the market leading tools and performance.  Don't make the mistake of thinking Lightroom is the benchmark.

78deluxe reacted to Patrick Connor in [FAQ] Stock Panel no longer contains Unsplash
In the stock panel we list a selection of stock image providers for the convenience of our customers on the basis of it being a free service. Unfortunately in the case of Unsplash they have begun demanding license fees for their API which is the reason they have been removed.
The good news is this  only affects Unsplash, the other options of Pixbay and Pexels continue to be available.
Of course should you wish to use Unsplash images you can download directly from their website using a browser and then import into your Affinity apps by drag & drop or File -> Place, as you would with any other stock library not listed in the panel.

This morning I was playing a little bit and created a set of droplet assets. Then I thought: "why not share them on the Affinity Forum?". So, here they are.
To install them, make sure the Assets panel is visible (View - Studio - Assets). From the little menu icon that is visible on top of this panel, select "Import Assets…".

Why would you promote a policy that is far worse for the customer than what Affinity has already given us historically?
I realize you are a "noobie" but Affinity hasn't asked up to pay for new features in 4+ years.
Yes they are likely on the verge of doing so, but for those of us that are not new, a yearly update price would effecitivly start to look like the standard yearly upgrade/update pricing model most consumers are not a fan of.
Lots of software companies have gone the route you suggested Sonar when Gibson owned them for example - and they went belly up.

Affinity is at the point where they can charge an upgrade again and not allienate the user base.  And if these sales are any indication, the upgrade price should be pretty reasonable.

Thank you, that is to be expected at the moment. Unfortunately that is the best we have as for now we are just avoiding the crash. This post by Unsplash explains what has happened, and we will have to modify our code to adjust for it, which has not yet been done.

I thought I would share a magazine template with the forum. It's a fairly basic style, but could be a good starting point for anyone needing to produce a magazine.
The template only includes placeholder images to keep the file size small, but you can take a look at a populated demo online by clicking THIS LINK.
Any feedback or suggestions would be gratefully received.
Fonts required for the template are:
Avenir Next and PT Sans Narrow. Both font families should be available for free download.

The generate revenue comment isn't speculation.  We know Affinity has over 2M users across the apps, a figure they shared a while ago.  As I said, even with a small upgrade cost to get the majority to upgrade, that would mathematically generate a ton of revenue.

If you work in software development as you claim.  Kind of shameful you propose any upgrade cost wouldn't be worth it to you, even to maintain and receive modest new features for a few years.  (they haven't had an upgrade charge in over 3 years)

78deluxe reacted to A. Loewen in Portrait Editing Brushes & Macros
Hello, I'm a photography and editing enthusiast. I've been learning this craft for a while and I'm a firm believer in sharing information so others can learn, and adapt it to their own needs. Many of the techniques I used to create these brushes and macros were not pioneered by myself, but I did create the brushes and macros contained within here myself.

    Installation
    Brushes
Enable the Brushes studio panel if it is not already, click View > Studio > Brushes.
Click on the Brushes studio panel, then click the Waffle icon. Click Import Brushes, and find the downloaded brush file on your system.
A new brush category called "Retouching" will appear in the Brushes studio panel.
    Macros
Enable the Library studio panel if it is not already, click View > Studio > Library.
Click the Library studio panel then click the Waffle icon. Click Import Macros, and find the downloaded brush file on your system.
A new macro category called "Retouching" will appear in the Library studio panel.
    Modifying
    Brushes
Right click a brush and click Edit
    Macros
Enable the Macro studio panel if it is not already, click View > Studio > Macro. Right click one of the macros and choose Edit Macro. Some steps allow you to click a gear and alter values. If you need to modify more in depth, unfortunately you will need to re-record the entire macro. I highly recommend opening a text editing program, and writing down each step in a macro before beginning to re-record. When done, you will need to click the button to Add to Library, or Export as an individual macro.

    What's Included
    Brushes
    Markup Pencil Brush
Useful for making "notes" to yourself. 3x High Flow Brushes
Hard, Satin, and Soft brushes. 3x Medium Flow Brushes
Hard, Satin, and Soft brushes. 3x Low Flow Brushes
Hard, Satin, and Soft brushes. This brush collection is sorted into each flow group by brush size (64, 32, 16) for easy identification when choosing a new brush. Choose a brush and resize it to the size that you need. Each brush has Pressure dynamics enabled for use with Art Tablets so that they offer a higher flow with more pen pressure, although they can also be used by mouse users.

    Macros
Any Macro appearing with a *** warning text will run slowly and be very intense on your computer's system resources. I highly recommend letting these macros run, and just waiting for them to complete without attempting to do more work, or alt-tabbing to other programs.

    Luminosity Masks ***
This macro manipulates channels to generate MASK LAYERS (not pixel layers), and deletes all created spare channels afterwards to avoid bloated files. To use one of the mask layers, drag the mask out of the folder and over another layer's picture icon so that it creates a vertical blue bar. Alternatively, drag the mask layer so that it appears normally in the layer stack (as if it were not clipped), right click the mask, then click Mask to Below. If you need more than one copy of a particular mask, right click the mask and click Duplicate. If you are interested in modifying the macro, I highly recommend watching Robin Whalley's video which is where I learned how to do this process within Affinity Photo. Black & White
Generates a Black & White adjustment layer which is extremely close to an alternative B&W conversion method using a 50% grey layer set to Color. Shoutout to Ezra & Ally who teach the technique here this merely automates the process they taught. Solarize
Generates a curve meant to be used to check color consistency across gradients, as well as useful for finding tricky dust spots / blemishes. This is not meant to be a creative effect, only useful for editing purposes. Dodge & Burn
Generates curve layers with masks for dodging and burning. Use a white brush on the mask to reveal the effect. I've tweaked the blend ranges so that each effect rolls off, i.e. dodge will not effect the bright tones as much as it does the dark tones, burn will not effect the dark tones as much as it does the bright tones. Color Correction
Generates a curve in both RGB and CMYK color space for basic color correction. Open the curve layer, use the picker tool inside the adjustment properties and click on the area of the image you wish to correct. Some knowledge of color theory is useful here. Contrast
Simple curve layer with an S-Curve to boost image contrast. Local Contrast & Sharpening ***
Do you enjoy the Clarity filter, but hate how little control it gives you? Give your image some punch while being able to dial in the amount of local contrast boost and sharpening independantly. For more effect, feel free to duplicate either layer. Use a mask on an individual effect, or the whole group. Frequency Separation - Bilateral ***
Some editing workflows prefer using a different blur to the gaussian method of the built-in filter. Because of limitations of how Macros work, the blur will not generate an actual preview. If you need to preview what you are doing, please create a merged visible layer (Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E), then run the Bilateral Blur filter. Record the values you find to be useful, then delete the merged layer and run the macro.

Once the digital copy is out there is also creates instant pirating these days unfortunatly.
With the layout of the Photo and Designer books, I haven't found #4 to be an actual issue and all the other points really just revolve around environmental concerns and honestly there are far more wasteful things we all consume everyday that could be cut down on than a book that should last a very long time.
The only point I'd see some validity on would be a digital book could be purchased and updated without additional cost or loss to the end user.  Affinity seems to continue development, which is fantastic but eventually have to imagine that some of the tools can change (ex.  HSL adjustment tool in the more recent versions).

Not everyone has a sense of loyalty.  I do.  Affinity made these fanatstic apps and offered them with free updates and at a price point virtually anyone can afford (at least one of them).  That breeds loyalty.  If you don't have some urge to say thank you and pass on the info to others that would benefit from these amazing products, I pitty you and whatever crewl childhood you had to make you the way you are today.  😂

Related to this update...it seems Affinity has both put out Optimized for the new chip and compatiblity of the latest Apple OS....are these things not expected for many months from now in the Adobe "alternative" lineup?
Affinity reported some 2 million users a while ago or something like that.  Seems it is time for us Affinity users to utalize the "network effect advantages" we have.
I'm not a MAC user, but the fact Affinity just made this announcement and what I'm hearing from the dark side that the competitiaon is many months out from optimizaiton and full support, suggests Affinity is playing in that professional network space.  The number of users with the M1 chip today???   Pretty much beta testers, so they are well ahead of the curve.

Many of us don't use Adobe for a reason.  Please don't use them as any sort of model of what Affinity should be doing.
I own multiple computers (a proud supporter of Affinity and strongly encourge anyone that has any remote interest in visual art of any form to jump on board and pay the very resaonble entry fee).  I appreciate the fact I'm not limited to just a couple installs for the machines I personally use (one at a time of course).

We are pleased to announce an update for the Windows release of Affinity Photo, version 1.8.5
    Changes in this build
The changes in Affinity Photo for Windows 1.8.5 (made since the last release Affinity Photo for Windows 1.8.4) are as follows:
    Fixes & Improvements:
Fixed many tablet input problems (by reverting the default input method to be Low Precision mode, the same as in 1.8.3).  Added tablet input preference (in Tools section) to opt-in to High Precision mode, or Windows Ink mode
(NOTE: previous command line options --legacy-wintab and --disable-wintab are now ignored). Fixed cursor disappearing following keyboard shortcuts that display dialogs, while using a brush tool Fixed raster Crop Tool units multiplying incorrectly on the context toolbar Earlier changes and fixes in 1.8 made since 1.7 (including the new 1.8 features) are listed in some detail in 1.8.0 , 1.8.2  and the 1.8.3 update announcements.

UPDATING TO THIS VERSION (Free for existing customers)
The software version can be seen on the splash screen and the About dialog (in Help > About Affinity Photo).
If you’ve purchased from the Affinity Store— each time you start the Affinity Store software it will check for updates and offer any available update. The latest update will install over the top of any earlier version, with no need to uninstall. You can download the latest installer by logging into the affinity store here and find the order in your account and use the "Download" button in there. Alternatively, this new release (and previous versions of Affinity Photo for Windows) can be downloaded from this link. (that installer is NOT for Windows Store purchases and needs a product key).
