Having selected the Elipse tool, you can see ‘Select new object’ in the context toolbar.
Tick the box in front of it. That's all.

I noticed you have Layer 1 set to ‘Passthrough’.
Try changing it to ’Normal’. I had the same sort of experience and that did the trick.

Tested with beta 1009 and experienced no problem.

Downloaded John’s macros and tried them. They work as expected, but only if document units are set to pixels.
So I tried a new macro: set unit to pixels – run John’s macro – set units to millimeters.
Happy to see we can use a macro wihtin another macro.

Selecting the Freehand Selection Tool doesn't change the cursor to a lasso. The cursor of the previously used tool stays active.
FS Tool works, though.
Same in Designer's Pixel Persona.

Opened your file in Indesign (CS6), saved as new idml. This second idml openend in Publisher as expected.
Changed the extention of both idml-files to .zip and extracted both files.
The second zip-file contained the following files/folders:
– Resources
– designmap.xml
– META-INF
– mimetype    
– XML
– Stories
– Spreads
– MasterSpreads
Your file only contained
– designmap.xml
– mimetype
 
I hope this helps to find a solution.

I recorded a video of replacing a placed jpeg with an AfPhoto file twice.
The first time using the Resource Manager, the second time using the ‘Replace’ button in the context tool bar.
This time in AfPub 1.8.4 retail.

By the way: same thing happens when this Designer document is placed in a Publisher document. OK in 1.8, not in 1.9 beta.

It doesn't seem to work well on text yet: applying ‘select same fill colour‘ to text results in selecting all text, no matter which colour.
Applying the same to an object, results in a selection of all object with the same fill colour (hooray!), but ignores text with the same colour.
Although I can see an advantage in the latter, I would like to be able to select all text with the same colour.

Even the free version opens indd (and idml) files and exports idml.
 

In the free version you can ‘save as > idml’ and ‘export > document > idml’.
I've only been playing around with the – somewhat crippled – free version of Vivadesigner. Never  used it for a project, so never got the commercial version.

Well, ChristiduToit, you're not the only one.
I have experienced the same as you described. Nothing serious, but anoying, though.

When using the zoom tool by pressing cmd + spacebar and then clicking to zoom in, Publisher jumps to another page (and zooms in).
After choosing the zoom tool from the toolbox, everything works as expected.
I have ‘scubby zoom’ disabled. With ‘scrubby zoom’ enabled, it also works as expected.

I miss this Illustrator-function.
Input: Overlapping shapes with different colors and blend modes.
Output: Cut out shapes for each intersected part affected by colors below, color equivalent in normal blend mode. (No rasterizing, no pixels.)

Only the page numbers in a table of contents are clickable.
That is not what I would expect. And I think in general one would expect the whole line to be clickable.
Still some work to be done here.

I also noticed, by the way, that an object/layer selected in the layers panel can be deleted without problem or warning.
I would prefer locked layers to be truly locked, so they cannot be deleted without first being unlocked.
