I really like how in Publisher, Layers panel only show content from selected page!
It would be GREAT if Artboards in Designer would behave in the same way!!
(I have over 50 artboards (I am designing mobile app UI) and the Layers list is just cluttered with other artboards which I really do not need + I believe it is slowing down the application performance)
I'd love to move away from Adobe Photoshop and use Affinity Photo for all my painting, but I just need one feature to make the switch, Affinity needs to let users Clip a layer to a group. I've made a video showing off the feature, examples of using it, and why it's a must have, please check out the video and consider supporting this feature!
I had some minor suggestions on the artboard tool that would save me one or two steps.
Allow the artboard tool to handle custom sizes at creation (Main focus of this post)
Allow the artboard tool to create & delete artboard presets
Show what size presets currently are.
I work with print a lot and affinity artboard presets are currently mobile/device focused, allowing me to enter custom sizes would save me a little time.
Allowing me to create custom presets / swap presets like affinity already has would be a bonus.
I included a quick example of what I mean compared to what we currently have.
What we currently have 👇
An example of how the rename widow could look was also included, affinity pretty much could reuse their rename preset window.
Every time I use artboards I think man if only they made this one step instead of two or three.
It would suit me if, instead of this completely unusable list for me, Favourite items from the New Documents list or from my own templates were offered.
For me in addition to the original post:
trace tool
better gradient controls it was hard to reuse gradients... Like if I make a layer effect gradient I want to use elsewhere what now? Why doesn't this work like color? Why are layer and fill color/gradients not the same?
Paint format tool like in google docs so I copy text fonts/styles quickly and reapply in 1 click..
I'm still surprised we don't have symmetry tools/rulers that doesn't sound that hard to implement....
I feel overall Publisher upgrades were nice. Designer upgrades so-so.. Photo not that noticeable...
I really, really, really, like that new handle in the Frame text objects. Nice improvement! I think it's a brilliant new approach to make the text frame very flexible. Especially when used in Symbols.
However, there are many cases when I created a Symbol using Art Text, which seemed suited at the early design stage; usually before the editor wanted extend copy. Now I need that single line to wrap because i became too long.
Of course, that warp needs to be adjusted per symbol instances, which is well achieved by the Frame Text object. It's the conversion process that's not as nice:
Current steps are :
• Select the Art Text object;
• Copy the text from the Art Text object;
• Creating a new Frame Text object (Which usually implies that some Symbol instances will have to be adjusted after the fact);
• Paste the text in the Frame Text;
• Insert that new Frame Text object correctly in the Symbol;
• Align the Art and Frame Text object (Which had to be done by eye);
• Delete the Art Text object;
• Adjust the wrap as needed.
It works, but it's a lot of steps for something very "mechanical" that requires no human interpretation.
What would be nice is :
• Select the Art Text object;
• Convert to Frame Text
• Adjust the wrap as needed.
I supposed that we coud use the Frame Text by default, but sometimes the frame just gets in the way. For that reason, it would also be nice to be able to convert a Text Frame to an Art Text as well — I can see the nightmare the latest would produce in case of a symbol with different warps... Ouch!.
1) They lost information with the some of the new icons, the source of color made them easier to scan on those icons. Removing the color will slow down users.
2) I agree, looks better.
3) I'm not sure if having colors for particular software is good or bad, but would make the color schemes at least make more sense. To me most of the color in affinity feels kind of random.
4) The placement of the horizontal or vertical button is really bad, layout info should be in the layout section... I feel those buttons should be larger and in a place you scan more often, same with the heart though, that feels like an awkward place for it. Personally I preferred more of the old layout as it felt the info was compacted better and looks faster to use.
5 & 10) Yeah it's a big downgrade.
7) I still can't believe they don't have this. I complained about this years ago!
The bad UI changes is a big disappointment for me. It's made me debate getting the upgrade, I used to admire Affinity for some their design choices but it feels like they didn't care as much with this round. I've always thought their icons were not great but at least readable, some of the new ones now are again just bad... And I'm disappointed they didn't follow standard UX laws of grouping like info, and reducing clicks when possible, etc. It feels like they wanted to really use screen space in this update, but the problem with using a lot of screen space is it slows you down. A fair amount of other posts bring up where they slowed down the experience. Most of the time it's better not to show advanced features or previews unless the user asks for it and it would be better to make them a separate window as most users won't need that info. I think it would have been better not to make the UI changes a selling point as they are mostly a disappointment.
That said I've been a fan of affinity for a while so I intend to upgrade and hope things will improve in the next version 10 years from now
So, this is an old problem, I've seen explanations full of words saying it's the operating system issue and bla bla bla.
The problem is with the way they affinity softwares handle what is pasted from the clipboard.
Attached is a video where I paint something on a layer in Krita and then paste the content of the layer in Inkscape, Clip Studio Paint, Rebelle 5 and finally in Designer 2.0 (Don't mind the video quality, I recorded it using ShareX and it was encoded to have a small file)
image_transparency_past_clipboard_to_affinity.mp4
A screen of the result with Affinity software if you can't watch the video.
Looking at the feature requests I have been following from V1, it appears none of them were implemented in V2. What are some feature requests that did get implemented?
WIN11 - AFFINITY Software - First impression
Just buyed and installed cause I believe in Affinity revolution, the things I'm going to write are for improve and not to just critic, so:
The UI loose some fresh, the color contrast has some problem, lookat the "vector head" panel loosing the blue line had become less contrasted, in general all the Icon seem less professional than before, was better the V1 for me.
The instrument Fill was ugly before with the colourized circle now is better.
Where are the nice blue icon for vector? Suggest, why don't you do an Orange graded UI for Publisher, blue graded UI for Designer and pourple UI for Affinity? that would be useful to remark wich software we are using and it's will be very cool my dear!
The New Document window become a little more complicated, no nice preview like before (very useful to me) the new one remember QuarkXpress to me
in the New Document window: orizontal or vertical button are moved on wrong way, i need to search with my eyes on the screen (loosing time), leave near the measure of the document pls! Before was an UI experience to select with wheels the format and search
ADesigner: the Pencil and the Vector Brush together make people dooing one click more, separete them like before!
THERE ARE STILL NO COPY BRUSH ???? STIILL? Appreciate the Select Style pick but it's work only on text, in AD I've a lot of brush line on a reetrace document and the Select Style doesn't select but simply apply something I don't understand. Why is missing such a total instrument?
PLS ADD THIS BUTTON (screenshot of LibreOffice a FREE software as you know!)
Grafica: The global contrast of Interface in Publisher is less smooth than before and the text has loose antialiases, very strange
Publisher fixed: it doesn't crash more the app before when i search font pressing a letter! Very good!
Not this one is the worst, the nice ad fast first looking export panel with the icon of the format where is gone? PLS Tel me why?
Where is gone the welcome window at the beginning? With information, fast link to example forum and news?
Just discover that the file version V2 are not COMPATIBLE with the V1? Really start to go back to Adobe it's seems to me all the smothed experiences I had with the V1 is going quite lost. Again is no sense!!!
Amd when u axport pdf it doesn't open automatically the file in reader. OMG.
Definelly there's less attention to the V2 i going back to the V1.
OMGII: I cannot go back to the V1 cause the Publisher crack when I search font in the text windows... Ahi ahi ahi! - It's sound sooooo programmed! Come on Affinity Team! Give back an answer to whom believe to you!
Unfortunally more I use more I found things i really dislike!
I'm sure I've still many new things to discover, Photo just crashed now.. oh.. no!
Go back on the rigth smothed icon UI you had created with the good feature of this one but make the experience nicer as before!!!!!
Sorry for my english!
I like the new icons because they are more vibrant and colorful. But they still are in the new flat design way that f* up the entire UI and I understand your point of view.
v1 made me think I was using a robust app :
While v2 make me feel I'm using a badly designed app with no Human Interface in mind. I don't know, that's the flat design that gives me the creeps...
Exactly !
The Drop down menu is annoying. Clicking an icon was faster!
Everything looks like a badly done app wish a fishy framework and takes more screen space :
v1 :
v2:
Scrolling and resizing the window to get to the other settings? That's a UI/UX design that comes from Web apps, Chrome... yuck yuck yuck.
v1:
v2:
Are you thinking of adding this soon as IngramSpark is pretty standard for producing indie hardbound books, they have registered over 7 million books and are rather well known.
It's like saying you won't be supporting Barnes & Nobles, it's pretty big. I haven't seen too many other hardbound book publishers that give me the options they do at their price.
Considering you have the other formats how hard would it be to add pdf/x-1a:2001?
Hi there!
I just wanted to share a list of Free for Commercial Use Fonts. This is a curated[*] list of some of the best freely available Fonts out there. The criteria I had in order to come up with this list:
They have to be either Free or Open Source Fonts.
They can be used in commercial projects (some restrictions may vary from Font to Font, so be sure to read first). I made my best to ensure this point, but I could be wrong and I'd be more that happy if you let me know if I made a mistake.
No attribution required.
In some cases (Serif and Sans Serif), they have to have more than two weights (at least one italic included).
Support for Spanish characters like Á, Ü, ¿¡!?, Ññ (since I speak Spanish, this was mandatory, but there are many more good Fonts that don't cover this criteria).
[*] I have basic knowledge about typography, but I have read reviews from well educated people in order to ensure quality.
Well, here it is the list. As you can see, they are grouped by classification, and a general one in that regard. Some of the Serif and Sans Serif fonts were included in "Headlines" because they had one weight or they had no italics/oblique.
[UPDATE] Added notes on some cases, like what the Font can be an alternative of.
[UPDATE] Added the number of Fonts.
[UPDATE] Adding previews of the fonts... eventhough some of them won't look as good, but it will help before clicking on a link.
[UPDATE] Where possible, I added a link to real life examples linking to Fonts In Use, for inspiration.

Just use an emoji font and it will work fine. I made a blog post covering this here. I even cover kaomoji.
Not very many emoji fonts exist but I recommended 3 of them in my blog post. I also show an example of how I use emoji's in game design using Affinity Publisher.
The 3 fonts I recommend are:
Google's Noto
OpenMoji
and
Code2000 (This one may have copyright issues so I would not use it professionally)
Now of course if the font doesn't support the glyph it won't work but all of these fonts are quite large with code2000 being one of the largest in the world so you should have some support.
This method does not support fancy color though as affinity does not support that, so you'll have to use basic font colors, but you can always convert into a shape and recolor it if you want.
Considering emoji's are updated every year you may not have the latest emoji's in these fonts but you will find a lot of support still.
As a web designer, I find websites like uiGradients.com a quite useful resource, with a massive selection of ready-made gradients (and css code for those).
This palette is a complete (01.09.2018) pack of all gradients alongside their names, hand-imported over the course of an afternoon and a few podcasts.
I don't think you can copyright colors/gradients, but the GitHub repository of the uiGradients.com website is licensed under MIT. I'll try to keep the file up to date with the website, but if there's a missing gradient or a error, please tell me about it.
