the iPad versions are also due
thought AP on iPad was already running in the office and the video demos and now it's still not here   :P
Pub won't happen soon, I'd bet!

I believe he means that AP is paging data to disk, which is different from saving a file to the disk. When apps run out of working memory, the OS starts moving chunks of data out of RAM into virtual memory, a section of the disk set aside on the fly as a temporary storage location. If & when that data is needed again by the app it is paged back into RAM.
Since it takes time to move data onto & off of the disk, this can cause the app to slow down while it waits for the data to be moved into RAM, sometimes long enough for the spinning wait cursor (sometimes known as the "spinning beach ball of death") to appear.
I am clueless about what memory efficiency means, other than I think it might be some kind of measure of data redundancy.
to put RAM vs SSD or HDD into perspective
if you render a huge panorama for whatever reason and your computers has to write to the hard-drive, even if it is the fastest M.2 SSD with a good connector your CPU can no longer work at 100% load because the data can not be served quickly enough. (happened to me once)
an Apple reseller once told a friend of mine that you would not need 8GB RAM because the new SSDs were so fast, which is obviously totally wrong.

yeah that looks much better thanks. i was adding the gradient on a blank layer :S
ah you used a pixel layer
well that is kind of bad practise in this case
(because vector is resolution independent and seems like affinity can thus optimise it in a better way)
@gdenby, does my file not look good on your side? did you choose a very high export compression?
cheers
-
so where did these pixel layers originate from?
Ultimately it does not matter though, so anyway
use a vector shape and fill it with a gradient and then export and all looks perfectly fine (at least when I tried it, so please try on your side)
I attached the file

Yeah something like that, but here is exactly what im trying as you can see in the png there is no banding on the left but on the right banding is noticable.
I see what you mean
I don´t have a solution but I admire the problem :D
do you have the affinity file (probably a simple file but anyhow :P )?

sound like the performance test thread was also mine, anyway
this is a helpful piece of information I can provide to you and shows that the devs are aware of the issue and working on something
https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/32447-exiftool-test/?p=158161
don´t know if it is already implemented or not
if you want to experiment on your own risk and also disable exiftool for the time being your startup speed may improve significantly

@MBd:
As you can see from my footer I'm a Windows user.
I see
at first I thought the updates were synchronised but obviously they are not

Although Affinity Review #1 & #2 are both old & somewhat out of date, I think a lot of old & new users alike would still find them interesting & informative. Neither one appears in the iBooks store anymore & the links here are all redirected to the Workbook promo page, so please consider making them both available again.
YES PLEASE
and please consider a new one
the last two were great!
cheers

Maybe try the speed --force option while starting affinity, but he sure to not have firewall active because it will need to download 4 additional cores from the affinity cloud.

@Petar
" I don't always Test my code, but when I do, I do it in production" :D
Actually the recent betas are...:
"As this is a stability beta, it is suitable for production work and should be used in preference to the App Store version if you need any of the fixes it contains."
Cheers

There is no adjustment to cure it, if there was one it would be activated by default.
In fact this takes work by the developers to enhance performance and there is not much you can reasonably do.

Just use the "speed" adjustment layer and drag it all the way to

Spot on, Alex_M,
That's exactly where I stopped. Also, to finesse the effect even further, I was thinking to find a way to have a smoother transition between the separations.
A lens chromatic aberration is not that perfect. With the method posted above, by nit-picking the image one is able to tell where the shift happens.
In other words, it needs to be more organic and less digital.
Just too little time... :(
Anyway, for the distortion only along the edges, I was thinking to investigate some displacement technique which, theoretically, should be a good candidate as with the proper displacement map it should be possible to preserve the center and affect the edges in a smooth, balanced way.
Hope to find some time this weekend to play more with it.
Or maybe use the source layer
Filter > detect edges
Layer > Rasterise to mask

just so you know
Affinity will be making such (sort of) a software themselves as well
cheers

you can still do it as a one click macro (just tried it) using the first technique
macros are buggy concerning different document sizes at times and unfinished regarding layer selection and movement though
but that is expected to improve (soon?) I guess

Here are some 35mm and 4x5 filmstrip templates which can be easily reused in AD/AP as photo borders, or for other sort of image presentations etc. - Each of these templates does contain always two (in past times) popular analog film brand looks, so you can switch between them through enabling/disabling layers, or modify/add your own additional ones. There is always also an indicated image place section, where you can mount your photos in.
AD/AF Templates:

thanks for the idea
maybe you can look into doing those with embedded comments and clipping to make them even easier to use
more Information here:
