Since quick mask is just one button press away
Q
And also has the option to use different brushes I don't think it is necessary

According to the link fonts have to be embedded. Does this mean that reading text as 'curves' will not work?
if you convert it to curves, it is not actually text anymore
it is just...curves/ shapes ;) :)

I have watched the develop raw videos in the youtube channel but that still doesn't answer my questions.
- Why should I reduce blackpoint or increase it? And by how much? How can I know that this is enough or not enough?
- Why should I adjust tonal curves? What is a tonal curve? Again, by how much should I adjust, when is it enough?
- Why should I reduce noise? What is this luminance and chrominance? How much, too much?
The above are just a few of the dozens of questions I get on each new concept that is introduced in the tutorial videos. And a typical video can introduce 10 concepts in the span of 6 minutes
can you give a quick list of these dozens?
I feel like doing them.
"by how much to edit them, and whether it the right amount of edit or it's too much or too little. How will I know that someone else will like what I did or not like? "
(1) mostly it is too much :)
(2) this is really hard to tell and takes time and practice, looking at work that others did and that you try to replicate certain looks you like and understand how they got something to the state it is
I've covered so far these topics

the quick mask brush is just the regular brush
only difference: it interprets shades of grey as selection/ non selection
adjusting the hardness should give you the desired effect

PS Surface Blur
AP Bilateral Blur
PS puppet Warp
AP Deform Filter
Cheers

1 select the pixel layer
2go to the channels panel
3 right klick "red green"
4 create greyscale channel
5 apply curve
6 layer > rasterise to mask
basically you create greyscale pixel layers of the channel and then use that as a mask instead of working with spare channels
cheers
PS: you can also add a curves adj. to the mask, but you have to select "alpha" instead of "master" and the adj. is not accessible anymore when the mask is nested which is really unfortunate

https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/38873-one-missing-serious-retouch-tool/?p=193787
added a macro to speed up retouching - Inverted Highpass used by many people
it is not the easiest to use CORRECTLY, it is mostly used to much but CAN be powerful

I would like all these histograms to be restricted to the pixels within the selection.
same goes for the vector scope

you might also want to take a look at cropping/ clipping to have some more options at your disposal :)
I actually think you have to crop first, and then rasterize
cheers

I made some LUT adjustments for AD and AP which I'd like to share with you.
the attached Affinity file features embedded documents so that you can easily preview the effect of all curves on a single photo and then choose a curve that fits best/ gives you a good starting point/ idea.
You can add them to your AP though opening the document, selecting each group, selecting the "LUT" adj, so that it's panel opens up, click "add preset". (I've made a feature request to make that easier)
You can then access them by the "view > studio > adjustments" panel which is active by default (only available in AP)
please don't overdo it :)
blend modes, opacity and blend ranges can, and should be adjusted upon your needs :)
for more information about such techniques you can have a look over here

I really like the "Technicolor" one :)
PS: similar presets for the "channel mixer" are available here

Hopefully, future betas will offer an updated message that makes it clearer why the current beta version is expired. Something for 1.6 betas?
"Thanks for raising this issue - we have closed it as "by design". "

Here

below the following buttons
UPDATE April 2017: V1.6 updates will be slightly later than planned, rather than being released at Easter as we initially hoped. Please follow us on Twitter or Facebook to get notified as soon as they are available.
@Affinity, would be good to also communicate in the forum directly as these are actually people reporting bugs and improving the software so guess would be fair to inform them/ us directly

I think the question is whether you like the technical details or more the artistic aspect
yeah you are both but...there is a tendency, figure that one out :)
probably better do more of the part that you have more knowledge on,
that will thus help people more because it is of higher quality

I've asked for a shared resources folder (Brushes, styles, preferences, etc) for ALL Affinity apps.... ideally this would be cached and synced both locally and on a user's cloud drive for ultimate flexibility... I'm optimistic the Devs have thought of this :)
that would work
I've just set it up for capture one and other stuff and think it is great
Affinity is missing though but we could add it

It lets you pick a base color and then calculates the Complementary, Monochromatic, Analogous, Split Complementary, Triadic, Tetradic colors ...
this is actually already available
Complementary
Split Complementary
Analogous
Accented Analogic
Triadic
Tetradic
Square
Tints
Shades
Tones
The 'UI' is quite crude though
