The ability to honour the selected insertion target while duplicating by dragging and with Power Duplicate was not part of the design for this feature, sorry, but we have made a improvement suggestion to the developers to see if this can be accommodated.

Thanks for the response @Patrick Connor In the Whats New Affinity video for 2.4  it totally looked like they were using the CMD + Drag as it looked so effortless.
Fingers crossed it can be implemented as that would be a real time saver

Protect Alpha won´t work for you?
Note that you don´t need to select anything - just paint over.

A measurer would be great.  Particularly for the isometric grids and things like that - the demo of isometric drawing had the instructor hand counting how many large/small divisions between objects - a little arrow that shows distance between elements on a given plane would be excellent.
For Max users there's XScope, which is great for lots of things, but for windows I haven't found anything similar.  Let me know if you know of one!
    Thanks

Just wanted to say +1 for a keyboard shortcut for filling a selection (e.g., Option + Delete for primary (foreground in PS) and Command + Delete for secondary (background in PS)).

Use those all the time in PS and am really missing that feature in Photo at the moment!  :(

Please add my vote to have this feature added. I like to have my panels set up a specific way on my second monitor. It's frustrating to have to rearrange and resize the panels every time I open a new image. Surely it can't be too hard a feature to add?????

I 100% agree with @metajake. The biggest thing that trips me up in Affinity Designer is this "return to previous tool" toggle function. When I hit "V" I want the default move/arrow tool. When I hit "B" I want the brush tool. I may hit it multiple times to ENSURE I am on that tool. But instead, that is the worst thing to do in Affinity Designer, because instead you just ensured that you have no clue what you just selected. Really disruptive to work flow.
I would be strongly in favor of a preferences option to disable this functionality. Then I would immediately disable it and forever be happy.
One Workaround that feels silly to do but actually helps...
If you want the brush tool (B) - and have been using (B) and (V) recently, don't click (B) First Click (H) or (Z) or (M) - anything you for sure have not used recently. Now click (B) Now & only now, you are guaranteed to have the brush tool. No matter what.

I've been using Affinity Photo for a few weeks and this is definitely the most annoying thing I had encountered. When I'm painting I switch tools using hotkeys a lot and I don't look at the tools panel at all so I often end up using other tool then I wanted. I had already removed all hotkey groups but this option is sorely missed.
I think that adding such option should not be that complicated...? =)

    Hi metajake,
There's no way to turn off the return (toggling) to previous tool behaviour. Only the "switching between tools of the same tool group" behaviour can be disabled giving each tool its own shortcut.

Regardless of individual perception of this "feature", it remains confusing, jarring and frustrating for many page layout software users.
    My analogy (which I've explained before  https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/56697-type-tool-to-move-tool-hotkey/&do=findComment&comment=289576 ) ...
goes something like: If I'm working at my desk, and I reach for my pencil (use hotkey), should I have to look closely to make sure that my pencil is in my hand, and not my pen or scissors? No.
In my mind, hotkeys primary purpose is speed. You reduce the speed by requiring me to keep track of which tool is chosen by a single hotkey.

Klababa reacted to metajake in Type tool to Move tool Hotkey
Even after assigning a different hotkey to the "Move" tool, it still toggles between Move and "Last Used Tool". Not to sound ungrateful, and it's nothing personal, but this Tool Toggling "feature" is annoying and distracting.

In real life, if I know exactly where my pencil is, and I reach for it, should I have to look closely at the pencil, and make sure that it's not the paintbrush? No. Hotkeys should function the same way. Reaching for my Move Tool should always give me my Move Tool, and reaching for my Text Tool should always give me my text tool.

I think that Affinity is asking too much of their users to expect them to maintain awareness of which Tool they are toggled between.
EITHER THAT, OR there should be a much more apparent indication of what tool that I am toggled between. Yes the "Contextual Toolbar" at the very top of the window changes, as well as the "Status" bar at the bottom of the window, but I'm not looking close enough at them to register, fast enough, which Tool I'm using. (But maybe that's just me).
