jaedee reacted to Alfred in Poster is cropped
In her original post Laura explained that her poster looks different when opened on a different machine, prompting @h_d to ask whether Agency FB and Baskerville Old Face are installed on the other machine. I was raising the possibility that a version of MS Office which came with those fonts had been installed on one machine but not the other.
Windows PCs don’t all come with MS Office pre-installed. On my most recent Windows machines I wouldn’t have had those fonts available if I hadn’t previously acquired copies of them.

I totally forgot to post this here, which is really dumb of me, because this is probably one of the most important places that this should be posted!

I worked with the lovely folks over at Serif/Affinity to create this official sample artwork for the release of Affinity Designer 1.7.
You can access the working file of this illustration both on the desktop as well as iPad versions of Designer by browsing the sample artwork section, which will allow you to have a look 'under the hood' to see how the illustration was put together. The artwork also shows up for a moment in the latest Affinity 1.7 video advertisement, and in two of their latest tutorial videos.
Though Designer is primarily a vector based app, I created this piece entirely in the Pixel Persona using raster brushes to show just how versatile the app can be.

You can see more of this over on my Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/christidutoit

...and if you'd like to read my ramblings, I did an interview on the Affinity Spotlight blog too:

Yes, it’s a perpetual licence. All 1.x updates are free, and version 1 will continue to work after version 2 is released, as long as your operating system supports it.

Create a selection on a blank layer (above the image your working on) and use the move tool to transform the selection.
Then select the layer your working with to apply the selection or mask the selection.

jaedee reacted to firstdefence in Pattern Layers - "Seamless" Patterns Not Seamless
    Try this...
Add the seamless texture to the workspace In the Layers Panel Control or CMD click the seamless texture layer to make a selection of that layers content. Go to Select > Grow / Shrink... and set Radius to -1px (The circular option is left unchecked.) The hidden trick to this is to NOT have the move tool selected when you click on the seamless texture layer else it will select the bounds of the texture and not honour the marching ants selection, so, have another tool selected when you click on the texture layer to make it active (highlighted) Now create your pattern layer by using Layer > Pattern layer from selection

jaedee reacted to lepr in Threshold and Color Adjustments in Affinity Designer
To make sense of the app behaviour, you need to realise that Affinity adjustments (Threshold Adjustment, for example) and filters (Layer Effect Gaussian Blur, for example) output a raster result, even when applied to a vector object.
The blurred object is all black with varying alpha, not varying colour (greys in your example). Threshold Adjustment affects colour, not alpha, therefore it has no visible effect when applied to the blurred black object alone.
The composite of the blurred black object over the white rectangle has varying colour (greys in your example), so applying the Threshold Adjustment to that composite does produce a visible effect.
Threshold Adjustment always produces black and white, but then you can overlay the black and white result with a colour using Screen blend mode. However, if you will be creating a vector version of your logo, then there is no point in colouring until you have that, and then it will be a simple case of giving the vector object a fill colour.
The result of the blur and threshold is in raster form and no current Affinity app can convert raster to vector, so you will need to either manually draw the required paths or use another app to do a conversion.

jaedee reacted to nezumi in Is Affinity Designer even developed anymore?
I moved to Affinity Designer the day it was released on PC. Never looked back.

After many years of using Adobe Illustrator I just dumped it to hell where it belongs with its clunkiness, sluggishness, absurdly minimal updates and unreliability. I rather use Affinity Designer that is absolute pleasure to work with, with less features, then have to curse every 10 minutes at the "industry standard". Some people like their little pocket knives with 100 tiny tools - I prefer solid knife with one, reliable blade. I made hundreds of commercial designs for many different products using Affinity Designer for the last 4 years. Labels, cloth designs, surfing boards designs... And for the last 4 years every now and then I read this whiny comments "oh no, how bad AD is, you need to charge more, you need to add function that I saw on some other app, I am so disappointed, blablabla".
Well I am not disappointed. I am extremely happy.
Do I miss some functions? Sure. Can I see space for improvement? Absolutely. In fact after I stop screaming here I will give devs idea for improvement
But I ditched software with 20+ years of development for that young AD because it simply works. Its not laggy mess that crashes at least twice a day like bloody Illustrator that I started literally to hate over the years. "Oh but you cant make something that other software can!". Well, other software couldn't do the most fundamental bloody thing for me - make my work a pleasure. AD did that for me. Same goes for Photoshop and Photo. I cant say much about Publisher because I am not using it save for adding tables   But I still bough it to support devs that made my work day a pleasure once more.
Keep up the good work ladies and gents! Negativity always is just a noise that leads to nowhere. I cant wait for 2.0! I put food on the table for my family for the last 4 years with your software. Using it daily. With pleasure. Thank you for that and lets keep it going, shall we?

We really aren't. In the last 4 years we have never stopped advertising for new Developers, and have taken a few on but not enough. If you know any encourage them to join us rather than bashing the ones we have got.

jaedee reacted to Boldlinedesign in boolean operation STILL almost impossible to use
I love Affinity Designer, but I cannot understand why the issues with the boolean operations persist years after they have been flagged repeatedly in the forums. Trying to expand simple strokes and divide and add together parts of these simple shapes results in a ton of errors. When I had discussed this in prior posts to the forum, it was alluded to that "dirty geometry" was the issue - because I had used the pen tool like a brush, building up multiple strokes at times to get the kind of thick to thin lines I wanted. In this case here, I'm using single pen strokes.
I really want to replace Illustrator with Designer - but I cannot understand why such a major component of Designer is still not anywhere closer to being fixed years after the problems began. I literally have to take the design out of Designer and into Illustrator or VectorStyler to expand it and merge cleanly the different parts

I fancied doing something shiny, not too easy but not too complicated either, 2 weeks max, so decided to see if I could get this done. Shame it turned out to be such a horrible movie. There was too much background on the photo I used so I cropped it to something a bit more interesting.
Who needs fancy pants gradient meshes when there’s the pen tool
Sorry about the equally horrible compression.

Again, climb down off your friggin' pedestal, mister 'professional.' You don't know diddly about the careers of other people here. Since the Affinity programs are just for poor rank 'beggars' so beneath you , why are you wasting your time here, incessantly spouting your ridicule? How does someone of your obvious (because you say so) time-is-money 'professional' status have a productive moment to lose dinking around with a $50 program that's obviously going nowhere (because you say so)?
