Below is an attempt at a portion of the Texturelabs.com tutorial using Affinity Photo.
The other portions of the video are less difficult to follow using Affinity Photo.

jaedee reacted to Aongus Collins in When will the next beta version be released?
I can't understand the negativity in some of the posts on this thread.
The Affinity suite is very much under active development, with six updates in 2021 alone, and a patch in March this year. The focus seems to be on refining the details for a professional workflow rather than on feature parity with other platforms. Serif has made it clear elsewhere that a major upgrade is in the works for 2022, and it will be a paid upgrade.
Affinity's value is outstanding, for software which (for me) delivers fully professional results in both newspaper and magazine illustration and greeting cards.
For comparison, the Creative Cloud multi-app plan that most professionals use costs $600 or €737 annually -- more than 4 times the once-off cost of licensing all 3 Affinity apps.
Even plugins for Adobe Illustrator are now adopting the subscription model. Phantasm now costs $140 a year plus tax (23% where I live). Again more than all three Affinity apps combined. Another plugin, EXDF-Pro (for importing DXF files) is $99 a year plus tax.
So I'll be happy to support a paid once-off upgrade given the alternative!
No inside information, but I wouldn't be surprised if Serif made some announcement next month to coincide with the Apple developer conference.

jaedee reacted to mrakonni in Layer opacity vs. fill
Hi all, I'm a bit late to the party, but there is a simple workaround for most blending modes that might help you.
The "additive" ones foremost (add, color dodge, the ones that do the glares and the rays and the glowsies :))
This is what it looks like:
TLDR:
- Make a new layer and fill it with 100% black color. On top of that layer put any layer you want to blend.
- Put both of them in a group and assign the blend mode you want to the group, not the layers in it.
- If the mode is color dodge, for example, you will notice the black layer disappear. That's good!
- Now adjust the opacity of the layer you put above the black layer (not the group) and... voila!
- Don't touch the background (black) layer or group opacity, they need to stay 100% all the time. (Unless you want to experiment later)
For other blending modes u need white (eg - color burn), 50% gray (vivid light) or none at all.
Play with them, put a background (the bottom most layer) in a group and fill it with either black, white, 50% gray,
or turn the background off completely. Pick a mode for the group and if the background turns transparent - that's the one u need.
If you realize you do not need a background - you don't need the group, use the layer alone.
Notes:
The "background layer" does not need to cover the whole document. It needs to cover as much as the
layer above it, so you can crop it later. If you merge (rasterize) the group it will blend properly, but
if you change the opacity again it will break. I leave them in a group, personally, because you can paint in
details or add layer effects to the layer you want to blend and they blend better. If you add more layers in this group,
note that they will first blend with each other and then the background, and all of them together under the mode of
the group - so feel free to experiment.
The long read:
Coming from someone who can't math to save his life: the problem is the way they are doing color math.
Not saying they are doing it wrong, it's just that their approach is different because (I assume) they
are using the GPU to do the work, and also the way their graphics engine works. I do game art mostly
and I came across this in older game engines. We had glare and sun ray (gradients) assets that where
transparent PNGs and they blended poorly. To blend properly you need a "full" pixel, not a "see through" one.
If the pixel is transparent the math goes byebye. Photoshop's fill slider (and layer effects, too) somehow blend
as if the pixel is not transparent, and yet it changes transparency (I know, but someone that does OpenGL dev,
for example, can explain this better than I ). 😄
There is a "take transparency data and +black or +white or plus 50% gray" thingie to add to the blend mode code
somewhere and it should behave properly. Yes, say hi to "designer math", haha. 😄
Adobe broke blending modes in Photoshop a few years ago and the same workaround worked there, until they added
the "Transparency shapes layer" checkbox in layer options, and that helped a lot in certain scenarios. What that actually does,
I have no idea, but it blends with a punch.
Sorry for the long post, hope it helps!
Cheers!

jaedee reacted to Hangman in Aligned objects not actually aligned
That's not how anti-aliasing works... Anti-aliasing uses semi-transparent pixels to simulate smoothing, so by the very nature of having semi-transparent pixels you will see a change in colour peeping through which is a blend between the top and the underlying colours... The balance between the two colours can be controlled by adjusting the Blend Gamma values for specific layers.
Hopefully these videos will demonstrate how a single pixel appears when rasterised using your example. Both show a 6px x 1px document, the first showing the two background colours/shapes pixel aligned, the second (as per your example), non-pixel aligned. I've then simply dragged a 1px x 1px teal coloured square across the background so you can see how the anti-aliasing blends both the background and pixel colours.
Pixel Aligned Background
Pixel Aligned.mp4
Non Pixel Aligned Background
Non Pixel Aligned.mp4 The graphic below shows a breakdown of the above process, with the background pink and yellow elements pixel aligned on the top row and non-pixel aligned (as per your graphic) on the bottom row of each graphic...
Bear in mind that vector graphics still have to be rasterised so they can be displayed on a screen that uses pixels, to achieve this vector software applies (to differing degrees) anti-aliasing to the vector elements. Since the effect of anti-aliasing is to blend the colour of the top most layer with the underlying colour this means when placing e.g., four squares adjacent to each other, even when perfectly pixel aligned you will see the hairline appear at the intersection of the squares because this is where the anti-aliasing is visible.
The hairline is a screen rendering issue only, if items are pixel aligned for screen then the hairlines don't appear on raster export and likewise the hairlines don't appear on final print resolution PDF artwork once printed either.
This issue is inherent in all vector based software, AD, Illustrator, Inkscape and so on. I believe in more recent versions of illustrator they have addressed the issue to some degree, possibly by changing the way vector graphics are anti-aliased, but from what I've seen (I don't use Illustrator so I can't test this) this results in the vector graphics having a soft appearance on-screen so they've almost cut off their nose to spite their face.
It's really not as simple as that, if it were we wouldn't be seeing this issue...
This isn't the case, it just happens not to be noticeable in your Keynote example. Take the same shapes (add one additional square) using the same dimensions and rotate them 45 degrees then the hairlines are visible (they're faint in my screengrab, but they are still visible). I don't know how Apple applies it's anti-aliasing, it may differ from AD, Illustrator, Inkscape and so on but regardless the same hairlines appear. You will likely see this more clearly if you do the same thing with your Keynote example.
You will also likely have seen that the visibility of these hairlines is dependent on the level of zoom you are viewing the graphic at, with some zoom levels the hairlines seemingly vanish but then reappear if zooming in or out further.
Because this is fundamentally a screen rendering issue, if the hairlines are a distraction you can remove/hide them altogether simply by disabling anti-aliasing. This can be done on a layer by layer basis or you can put any or all your graphics inside a Group and set the anti-aliasing state for the group. By default the elements contained within the group are set to Inherit so changing the rendering intent of the parent will automatically affect all the contained layers.
Equally you can overide the anti-aliasing for individual layers within the group by setting the layer's value to either Force On or Force Off.

jaedee reacted to Hangman in Aligned objects not actually aligned
By default if each of your three images were 333,333 pixels in width, the edges would already be anti-aliased so regardless of snapping them together you will still see the issue because you will have transparent pixels on the image edges but more than happy if you want to upload a Keynote file that demonstrates what you are seeing...
I was unsure if you were referring Keynote/Pages/Numbers here since each limits you to a 400% zoom and whilst you can enter decimal places, they automatically round to the nearest whole point. I think you also have to bear in mind that Keynote, Pages and Numbers are not designed for this purpose in the first place, being presentation, word processing and spreadsheet software.
That makes sense, thanks for letting me know...
Thinking about this as a gap is perhaps misleading, it's not an actual, physical gap, it is transparent pixels. If you take a look at this image and note how the two grey squares are positioned and how they both use fractional pixels. Even though they are snapped together and perfectly aligned, because they don't use whole pixel values the edges of the squares are anti-aliased, i.e., rendered using semi-transparent pixels. You can see this by looking at the vertical gradated line on the left which appears muted because the gradated background beneath the grey squares is showing through semi-transparent pixels. The vertical line to the right shows how the actual background looks without the transparent pixels, i.e., without any anti-aliasing.
So the hairline/gap that this conversation has all been about is simply the result of unavoidable anti-aliasing, it is the way software renders fractional pixels when the smallest unit available is one pixel.
Using whole pixel dimensions and positioning at whole pixel values removes the need for any anti-aliasing and hence you won't see any hairline/gap.
In this instance your original exported PDF would have no hairline/gaps if all created in a single document and exported. Bringing it into Photoshop or Affinity Photo and transforming it so it now has a height of 56.67px and exporting it to say a JPG file would now result in the file having an anti-aliased outer edge so depending on what you did with this file next you would potentially see this, e.g., if part of a triptych of images assembled in a similar fashion to your three iPhone images.
There is no way around this (apart from turning anti-aliasing off altogether but that would cause no end of issues with your images), that is just the nature of how this works.

jaedee reacted to chasm in Library Flyer - trying to make it pop
Thank you all! My bad that I uploaded the older version of the flyer done months ago. I've (hopefully) uploaded the last version which did contain graphics.
Wosven - You mentioned "Look at flyers or mockup/template images online, you'll find nice ideas to reuse in your work." Would you please share any sites you've found helpful for mock-ups/templates?
GarryP - your points are well taken. The local community skews older (70+) but I'm trying to attract pre-teens, teens, those in their 20s and 30s as well as successful people who don't use the library because they think we just have books they can get from Amazon and quicker.
I've taught myself how to video record and edit (LOVE DaVinci Resolve Free) video of library events, programs an orgs in the community (pls see our YouTube page with the Charlotte County Technical College (CTC) cooking and baking programs highlighted.

Many people don't even know we keep our DVDs for feature films and TV shows up-to-date so as soon as DVDs are pressed for a show (e.g "Billions" "Better Call Saul" or Oscar nominated and international films) we add them to our collection.
I wanted to convey that the library isn't just for the poor but can offer something for everyone, even those living in the lap of luxury.
I see your point about Free detracting graphically. We inserted it because in a poorer community people leap to the conclusion that if something is offered it costs $$$. But, I learned in writing to remove anything which slows your script down or could jeopardize your audience's attention and if that's how you viewed it then others will, too so thank you for that insight!
All.. I was trying to ascertain which font styles and colors appeal most to people reading your flyers? Gold and silver are out (I learned the hard way) but which colors have been found to pop? I'm trying to create a flyer that even people who could care less about a library want the flyer because it looks cool or they love the colors, patterns, shapes, graphics, etc.
Thank you ALL again for your kind help.

jaedee reacted to chasm in Library Flyer - trying to make it pop
Hi Wosven.
Please forgive me as I'm just now catching up with your very insightful thoughts.
You shared... "I won't read flyers out of my interests, it's like ads in the mailbox => direct to the bin. If people in the street try to give me some flyers, I ask what it is about, and decline if I'm not interested."
That begs the very key questions of how COULD we gain the attention of people like you who don't react well to flyers?
I still need to connect to the Morris columns (thank you so much for sharing that!)
We'd like to spark a pro-active, interactive conversation with those who lack library cards as to why they don't have one?
We don't have the budget of a multi-national corp to conduct studies and focus groups so we'll need to engage them in conversation. I do that daily when they phone in or they're lingering in the library lobby but we need broader outreach. We have a larger spaced library (used to be a grocery-like store) with 3 Meeting Rooms available for reservation and 3 study rooms accommodating 8+ people on a first come basis.
The plan isn't to just pile a bunch of flyers on a card table and walk away but to draw students over to the table to hand them a flyer or bookmark and engage them to determine if anything on our flyer would attract them to the library and if not what could we be offering them which would help their lives, goals, interests, etc.
Meaty stuff, eh?!
Thank you ALL for a robust conversation!!
