  1. My apologies, I will provide better info: The app is Photo. The warning message was something along the lines of "Affinity Photo cannot open this type of file" As I said further above, Affinity Photo and OS 13.4.1. In any case, it is largely irrelevant since it has started to open every jpeg file nice and smoothly as soon as I quit the app and started it again. It seems to have been a minor glitch. I apologise for crying for help so quickly, without trying even the most basic stuff. Many thanks. Stefan
  2. Hi everyone. I have been looking to see if there have been any other issues like mine reported, but I have failed to see any. I have just upgraded to V2 and the app won't open jpeg files. I have tried several, and I have tried them from different locations, always with the same result. Is this somewhat a common issue, am I just doing something wrong or none of the above? Many thanks, Stefan
  3. Hi everyone. I have recently started printing my photos. I edit on Affinity (Mac) and then I print from Windows (VM) using Qimage Ultimate. I am having a problem with a picture. After editing to my liking, I have decided to resize it to precisely the size I need, 140 x 90 mm. The problem is that after I do that, when I load it in Qimage for some reason is resizing it at 125 x 83 mm, or so. Of course I could not resize the document on Affinity and then just resize it in Qimage, but I figured it would be quicker this way. Is there anything I am doing wrong, or understanding wrong about the whole process? Many thanks, Stefan
  4. That makes sense. I assumed that since I can choose different fonts within the same layer, I could also apply an effect only to a selected/highlighted area. Cheers
  5. Last one, I promise. I have decided to add a bit of outer glow to the path text, the problem is that I only want to use that effect on the bottom part, on the word "joserra". Now, in my ignorance I selected that word, assuming this was the way to apply the effect just there. Much to my dismay, it isn't so. Whatever effect I choose to apply, it affects the whole text. Could you help me out? Afterwards I will show you the complete work, along with a rectangular label I have also made. A bit of background, the label is for a limited batch of an artisan shaving soap. Nerd. I know.
  6. Aaaaah, got it. I couldn't find the effects blend mode at the beginning, so I was using the layer blend mode instead. I found it and, indeed, it works now. Many thanks. See you guys in a few hours... 😅
  7. Nope. That is not it. I had it set to Normal. I can't figure it out, I tried to place the text layer everywhere, tried all the options and no luck yet....
  8. Right, guys, sorry to be a PITA, there's another issue that I've come across and don't understand why it happens. I wanted to try and apply an outer shadow to some of the text, offsetting it a bit. For some reason, if I do it outside the image I am working on, ie on the canvas, then it works perfectly. However, as soon as I drag the text to its place, the effect disappears. I attach screenshots so you can see what I mean, I have also included my layers panel. Many thanks, Stefan
  9. Hi guys, thank you for your help, I actually decided to do a bit more digging after asking and arrived to a more elegant solution, not to mention that it is better from the aesthetic point of view. I created a secondary elipse within the first one and placed the text around it; this has also solved the mystery of not being able to change the attributes of the fonts. Oh, the wonders of messing around with software one barely understands.... 😆
  10. Hi everyone, I am having a weird problem designing a label. It bugs me because it is something I have done on one previous occasion and didn't come across this issue but now, for some reason, can't get it to work. So, what did I do, I created an elipse, a circle rather, and placed an image on it. I did add some text and modify it to my liking, more or less. I am trying to add a path text along the shape of the circle and this is where things start to go south. As soon as I place the Art Text icon to follow the shape of the circle, the image I placed within the circle disappears, as I show you in my attachment. Also, for some reason, I cannot change the colour of the font, doesn't matter the colour I pick, the text remains black which, for obvious reasons, it doesn't really work against a black background. I have attached a screenshot of the way I have my layers organized which, to be fair, is something I still have to learn properly. Thank you for your help
  11. I was going to post something quite similar as I have, too, started to home print, I hope you don't mind me piggybacking on your thread. I have the exact problem. When soft proofing, I honestly haven't got the foggiest what profile to choose for nothing that's listed there makes an awful lot of sense to me, much less is it related in any shape of form to neither the printer nor the paper I am using. The printer is a Canon TS8350, I know it's not a proper printer for photography but still, I'd like to squeeze out of it as good results as possible. Eventually, I settled for the Generic CMYK profile and made sure I was selecting the correct paper both on the printer and on the print dialogue. That was also approximate because, for the test prints I've done, I used paper inherited from my Dad, which is at least 10 years old. To make matters worse, they aren't even Canon. The problem with the paper is sorted, I shall be receiving tomorrow a pack, but my question remains: what profile should I soft proof to? I've checked on Canon's website, there are no specific paper profiles for my printer, hence my question. Thank you for your help, Stefan
  12. Dan, many thanks for that, it does help a bit and it would certainly solve the problem if I printed my pics at home, unfortunately I don't so I took the file to the lab for printing. Does this mean I have to tell them that they must pay attention to the scaling option when printing? I doubt it, I would assume they'd do it by default, or would they? Haven't got a clue.... I am assuming the mistake comes from my end but I am failing to see it. By the way, resolution was set at 360 DPI.
  13. Hi everyone. This might sound a bit silly but please bear with me. I needed to crop part of a picture using a heart shape, and the cropped piece needed to be a certain size. So, I used the elipse tool using a heart shape, dragged it across the part I needed to include, went to the "transform" tab and added the height and width I needed. I used "mm" and Photo took care of the rest. This didn't work as planned, I printed the selection on a transparent background and the image was probably 20% the size it needed to be. I am pretty sure that the problem I have is that I don't have a complete understanding of the whole resolution/size/format aspect of editing. I suppose the problem is that I must alter the size of the document depending on the size the picture is gonna be printed? I used the default setting for document size, the pic having been taken with a m4/3 camera. Then I printed the picture (have had it printed, actually) on 10x15. I have the feeling that in order to have a 55 x 55 mm picture (the size I need the selection to be) I should have printed it on a larger format or that I should've resized the document before getting to work on it. In short, how do I get the 55 x 55 mm selection I make on screen to correspond to a 55 x 55 mm printed image? Many thanks and sorry for asking something so basic.
  14. True, thanks a lot, I had read about that recommendation and totally forgot to do it. Many thanks!
  15. Hi everyone. I am stuck trying to make a label for a certain product, it is a silly little project. I have done the work in Affinity Photo so I placed everything in Designer, into a circle since the label will be circular. So far so good. I am trying to type something along the line of the circle, got there, found out how to do it but the problem is that as soon as I select the artistic text tool, or I convert my circle to a text path, everything disappears. So, to explain better, screenshots: I'd like to type stuff on the inside of the circle, so I select Artistic Text, go to the outside of the circle (want to do it clockwise) until the icon changes to the wavy "T", click and everything disappears. The problem is that after I am done typing sure enough what I've typed is still there but I cannot get the image back. Actually what happens is that what I type will be typed in a transparent font and I can see the background through it, doesn't matter if i choose a different font colour, it won't change..... So I can sort of see my image through my text but the only way I can get it back is going back a few steps. I know I am doing something wrong but would you mind pointing me in the right direction? Many thanks.
  16. Hi everyone, thanks for your answers, this is something that could work, I will try both methods anyway and see what gets me closer to what I'd like.
  17. Hi everyone, first post here, glad to be here. I have been browsing a lot through the FAQ and also searched extensively but I haven't manage to find quite what I am looking for, I apologize in advance if I missed something. I am working on a small project and I would like to use the image of a bengal tiger, but not the whole image, just the edges. I'd take this image, for instance: Let's say I'd only use the portrait of the tiger but I am not interested in anything but the edges. Kind of what I see when I muck about with the High Pass filter. I'd like to take "those edges" sans the gray background and place them on top of something else. The latter part is not important, I'd find the way to do it, but I haven't been able to isolate or to extract just the outline of the stripes/spots/eyes etc.... I am sorry if I am not making myself very clear, hope I do, but English is not my mother tongue and also photo editing is far from being my area of expertise so I am probably using the wrong terms, so I apologize. Many thanks for your help.
