Backup and restore is very robust now using iCloud and my preferred method, if you have tens of thousands  of photos it can take several days to fully restore. However if low level file system is damaged you may need to use a desktop restore or even more a DFU restore cycle.

I did a full reinstall today. So far so good. Stress test over the next few days.

Hi @Patrick Connor (I didn't know who exactly to direct the Help comment to).
The current description about Crop tool in Help is not clear - it is not clear if it is an image as a whole document or an image placed on a layer.

It is only described in the note in the chapter about "cropping".

Thus, a proper understanding of the crop tool's functionality requires a detailed reading of several Help articles, which is probably not optimal.

It is a bit odd. Designer seems to have the ability to crop a layer image, with its Vector Crop tool, but Photo doesn’t. It’s crop tool only has the ability to crop the entire document.

I can live with that but if you don’t have both apps it needs a bit of a work around.

What do you mean by “crop just a layer”, and which application are you using?

The Crop Tool in Designer and Publisher works differently to the tool with the same name in Photo.

(You might also be able to use clipping but that would depend on what you have and what you want to do with it.)

Ok, I mean if I have an image on a layer, can I just crop that image? Because selecting the Crop tool (Photo) selects the whole document.

That is worrying, sounds like your file system may have some corruptions, you do have plenty of iPad space still left?

Assuming that is ok then I would ensure you are backed up to iCloud AND your desktop then try one or more of these:-

    1. Closing ALL OPEN apps, wait a about a minute then doing a Forced Restart. You will not lose any settings or data.  https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/ipad/ipad9955c007/ipados

    2. If that does not solve it, try Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPad -> Reset -> Reset All Settings. You will lose Wifi passwords and have to re-enter any customisations you have done eg widgets etc.

    3. If that does not solve it then you will need to consider erasing your iPad and restore it from backup.

Yes, that's what I thought. Or I could just wait until the new iPad Mini 7 comes out later. this year 🙂

I did a full reset about a week ago, and it was fine for a few days. The next step is a complete reinstall. A pain, but not as bad as having to do it on a desktop

I use the files app all the time and never encountered a bug, are you using it with some external device  ?

No. I’ve been using it for years now. No problem until after the last update of iOS I think.

Now it locks up. Won’t display folders. In Affinity and other apps go to save and it won’t display folders. The only way to get it working again is a restart of the iPad. It’s a proper nuisance.

Dosent matter what I’m trying to access. Sometimes it’s fine. Sometimes it’s not.

  6. A solution has been found. Amazing.

I went into the iPad Settings, and selected Reset. The one just before the one that cleans it off ready for resale.
Gritting my teeth I hit ‘do it’

Well after a time the iPad was restarted and it’s like a different iPad. !
Everything works- I had to reset a few options like permissions, wallet and so on, but. Not as much as I thought.
However. Affinity apps are now working perfectly, along with Files. everything is working better than it has done for years.
I’ve been using this daily for years now, and I guess it was just so full of junk files it couldn’t continue.

So thanks for the ideas above folks. I appreciate it. I can report that a Reset is a good fix if it’s not been done before on a busy system. It fixes lots of things, and gives the iPad a new lease of life..

The admins will tell me off again but have you tried closing all open apps then doing a Forced Restart as many iPad problems can be fixed this way.

By the way  anew beta 2.4.2 just dropped 2 minutes ago.

    Hi Paul

Yes, I’ve tried all that. And now, oddly. After the installation of the latest Beta a few minutes ago, the Betas at least seem to be ok. Haven’t given it a stress test yet but looking ok so far.

    fingers crossed

  8. I thought I’d solved the issue, but no.

Opening Affinity apps and they lock up, then crash. Or open then can’t access the files and folders where images are stored.

Even the previous Betas are doing it. Either not working or random failures. They are unusable.

Procreate and most other apps work fine it seems.
Has anybody else seen any random behaviour suddenly. Since the latest update actually I think.
